    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Many databases, without documentation, have placed Geoffery Loomis as a son of John and Agnes Loomis making him the brother of Joseph. The books quoted below likewise place him as the brother to Joseph. I believe it to be more likely that he is the brother of Joseph's father John thereby making him the uncle of Joseph.
I have no more documentation for my proposed connection than does the opposing point of view. In fact he may have been a cousin from an unknown father. What we know that both John and Geoffery lived in Braintree, both were associated with John Lunt, both had the profession of clothier/tailor, and both died within six years of each other - John died in 1619 and Geoffery died in 1625.
We do have the wills of both Johns, which are fully transcribed in my notes of each John. For the younger John Loomis per his will dated 14 Apr 1619 and presented in the Court of the Commissary of the Bishop of London for the counties of Essex and Hartford on 29 May 1619, we know the executor was Joseph Loomis, his son, and that he mentions his four daughters, son Joseph, and wife Agnes. Even though John Loomis was a contemporary of Geoffrey Loomis living in the same village. it seems odd he would not have mentioned him if he were in fact also his son. On the other hand, going back one generation to John Lummyus and Kyrsten Pasfield/Jackson, we find in that will only mention of his wife Kyrsten and no children at all (even though we know he had at least a son John). It makes no sense that the first will would exclude the mention of Geoffrey while listing five other children; however, the other will by not mentioning any children opens up the possibility that there could be more than the known son John.
From the book "The Descendants (by the Female Branches) of Joseph Loomis, who Came from Braintree, England, in the Year 1638 and Settled in Windsor, CT, in 1639," by Elias Loomis (Yale Professor), 1880, v. 1, pp. 10-14, we also have the following historical references to Geoffrey:
"In the same Court, on 15 Oct 1625, letters to administer the estate of Geoffery Lomas, of Braintree, co. Essex, were granted to his widow Priscilla.
"In the same court, on 6 Feb 1631-2, letters to administer the estate of Priscilla Loomys alias Whitehead, of Braintree, co. Essex, were granted to John Lunt, of Braintree, tailor, curator and guardian assigned of Priscilla Loomys, daughter of deceased, then aged 14 years and upwards...
"We learn from [John's will (which I do not requote here)] that John Loomis of Braintree, England, died between April 14 and May 29, 1619. He left a wife Agnes, an only son Joseph, and four daughter all married, viz: Ann Warr, Sarah Burton, Elizabeth wife of William Preston, and Jane Pengelly. Whether Georffrey Lomas was related to John Loomis is not known, but it is noticeable that John Lunt who occupied John Loomis' house in 1619 was witness to his will, was also adminstrator of the estate of Priscilla Loomys and guardian of her daughter."
In reviewing the above quoted statements, I believe we must consider that both Geoffrey and his wife Priscilla died relatively close timewise to each other in 1625 and 1631/2 showing potentially that they were in their mature years. I believe this then lends itself to showing that they would be more of Joseph's father's generation rather than that of Joseph, since John also died relatively close in 1619.
The book "Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America," by Elias Loomis; update of 1875 edition published by Elisha S. Loomis, Berea, Ohio, 1908, third (1908) edition, also somewhat contradicts itself by saying Geoffrey was the son at one point as follows while subsequently not listing him in the family tree it then develops. The first statement from page 98 is as follows:
"As to this Geoffrey Lummys, there is no record of him in the court rolls or subsidies for Braintree, or Thaxted, nor for the Hundreds of Hinckford and Dunmow. He was also a clothier and must be considered as a brother of Joseph Loomis, even though there is no extant record of the baptism of either man. Geoffrey Lummys figures in Close Roll, number 2580, part I, for the 22 year of James I (1624) filed in the Record Office, London, as per this abstract: -
'Indenture, 16 April 20 James I, between Ezekiel Clarke of ffested, Essex; clothier, and Jeffrey Loomys of Brayntree, Essex, clothier, the same being a mortgage deed for ₤10, with 10 shillings interest, loaned by Jeffrey Loomys on one messuage and tenement with a garden and overcrofte of land adjoining called Baseleyes tente (tenement) in ffelsted church, between the king's highwaie there leading from ffelsted church towards Hartford Brridge, and a field called sixteen acres with theire appertances which the said Ezekiel Clarke late had to him and his heires by the grante and ffeoffements of Mary Clarke widowe, his mother by reason of the decease of the said Mary as by deeds of ffeofement thereof made the Seaventh day of August 15th of James I.'
The contradicting statement from the same book:
      "Unknown, two sons:
      Thos. Lummyus, d. 1551.
John Lummys, will 1567, m. to Kyrsten Pasfield (or Jackson). Two sons:
John Lummys, bap. 1562, d. 1619, m. to Agnes. Six children:
Joseph Lummys the emigrant, m. Mary White, dau. of Robert White.
      Ann (Warr).
      Sara (Burton)
      Elizabeth (Preston)
      Jane (Pengally)
      Geoffrey, d. 1625, m. Priscilla (Whitehead?), d. 1631. One daughter Priscilla.
Edward Lomys of Bocking, m. 2 Aug 1593 to Alicia Perie. Four Children:
      Jane, d. 1595.
      Frances, d. 1595.
      Thos., c. 1596-7.
      William, bap. 9 Jan 1596-7.
William Lommance, d. 1540, five children:
John Lommance, m. Alice Pasfield (or Jackson) will 1580, four children [see book for detail].
      William Lummys, d. Lavenham 1573.
      Margaret (Llower) Brigham.
      James Lummys, living 1573.
Richard Lummys, d. Lavenham 1588, m. Anne or Agnes Gylbarte, four children [see book for detail]."
Another aspect we must consider is the age of Geoffrey and Priscilla's daughter Priscilla who was fourteen when her mother died in 1631/1632. We can assume a birth year of about 1618. If John and Kyrsten are truly Geoffrey's parents, then he would have to have been born prior to 1567 when John dies. It would make Geoffrey no less than 51 when Priscilla, the daughter, is born. This seems a bit problematic, but possible, since we have no idea of when Geoffrey married his wife and old she was at the time of marriage.
It is possible that Geoffrey could be the brother of Joseph, uncle of Joseph, or even a cousin to Joseph or his father John; however, I propose him as the brother of John for now until further evidence can be found otherwise.

      2. See notes of "supposed" father John Lummyus for a transcription of early Thaxted, Essex records concerning all "Loomis" entires in that church's records in which we unfortunately do not none find Geoffrey.

      BURIAL:
      1. The book "Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America," by Elias Loomis, Berea, Ohio, third (1908) edition, pp. 108-110:
"Here without St. Michael's, Braintree, were laid in consecrated ground, Joseph's father, his mother and his probable brother [or uncle in my opinion] Geoffrey and sister-in-law [or aunt in my opinion], Priscilla... No word, no mark, no stone or brass - nothing whatever remains today, either within or without the church, to show that any of these poeple ever here lived and died. Scarce two acres is the churchyard, yet within this space have been placed the thousands of the parish dead for nigh a thousand years. This ground has been buried full over and over again; interment has been put upon interment, - stone upon stone. All is confusion, - hopeless and hapless...
The records of baptisms, marriages and burials now exist only back to 1660."
