    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Barbara L. Eades reports by email 31 Aug 2003 that she has been in contact with a descendant of Evan. This contact says that Evan was excommunicated from the LDS Church because he had a drinking problem.

      2. Online Ordinance Index has variant names as Evins, Evans, Evan or Even and surname as O'Bannon, O'Bannion, and O'Banion.

      3. 6 Sep 2003 Worldconnect database "debbieleu" reports two children of the first marriage to Margaret Hall: George M. O'Banion, b. 15 Sep 1827 in Morgan Co., IL, and James H. O'Banion, b. 5 Oct 1833 in Morgan Co., IL. The database also shows the two other marriages noted below to Mary Ann Cole (b. 27 Dec 1823 in Salisbury, Somerset, PA, d. 24 Apr 1896 in Cache Co., UT), and Jane Hawley (b. 22 Oct 1821 in Shaftsbury, Bennington, VT, d. 6 Dec 1895 in Portage, Box Elder, UT). No mention of Nancy White. She does note that marriage to Mary Ann ended in divorce. Also notes a child Margeret Jane O'Banion (b. 24 Sep 1850 in Kanesville, Pottawattamie, IA, d. 4 Apr 1930 in Hyrum, Cache, UT, m. Meredith Fisk Ames in 1864 in Salt Lake City) with Jane Hawley. Note: Woodbine Cemetery, Harrison Co., IA reports the following records at Addition O, Blk. 1, row 12, which appear to be the son James noted above:
      James H. O'Banion, died 3 Jan 1899, 65y 2m 28d.
Nancy O'Banion, 23 Jun 1847 -22 Jul 1907. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Jas. O'Banion marrying Nancy Boone 4 Nov 1862. Per www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/, her parents were Robert E. and Elizabeth Boone, natives of Kentucky and Indiana respectively, and they were the parents of eight children: Ann M., deceased; Jane, deceased; Amanda A., Emaline, deceased; Samuel, Nancy, John T., and Laura L.; they settled in Harrison County - for more information see reference site for Nancy's brother John T. Boone who marries Luella O'Banion.]
      Unknown? (Marker with no markings.)
      Taylor Boone O'Banion, 1865-1945, father.
      Hattie Belle O'Banion, 1868-1959, mother.
I also find this same family in the 1870 census in Boyer Township, Harrison, IA, p. 5b, dwelling 72:
      James O'Banion, 34, farmer, $5000, $2500, IL.
      Nancy, 23, keeping house, IN.
      Isobel, 16, attending school, CA.
Alpheus, 12, works on farm, CA.
      Luella, 10, attending school, CA.
      Taylor, 4, IA.
In 1880, James is still in Boyer per census p. 57A:
James O'Banion, 45, IL KY KY.
      Nancy, 32, IN IN IN.
Elisabeth J., 16, IA IL IN.
Taylor B., 14, IA IL IN.
James Hale, 20, farm laborer, IA IN IN.
I also separately find in the 1900 census for Harrison County, IA, this same Nancy O'Banion as a widow. Her obituary is noted in an index in the Logan Observer and or Woodbine Twiner for 1907 (Logan is county seat for Harrison County). Do not confuse this Nancy, wife of James, for the Nancy White who was married to Evan O'Banion, James' father. James O'Banion shows up in 1880 census for Boyer, Harrison, Iowa, as age 45 b. IN with father parents b. KY married to Nancy, age 32, b. IN with parents b. IN, and with two children ages 16 and 14.

      4. Censuses:
1851 Iowa State: Pottawattamie County. FHL film 1022203. The entire state was counted but only Pottawattamie listed everyone by name in the household and their ages; other counties only listed the head of the household and a numerical count without names of the various ages by sex in the household. No date is given when the census was taken but it was certified in Dec. 1851; however, the other counties show a Sep 1851 date which also appears more likely for Pottawattamie as well in light of ages given some children with known birthdays in October. Census return:
O'Banion: Evins 51, Jane 29, Jasper 13. Also in same household is Mary Wetherbee 11, Sara C. Wetherbee, Harrison L. Booth 3, and Margarett O'Banion 1/2. [Note that Evins is several pages away in the census from either Samuel Adair or Nancy Maynard. Nancy will be his future wife and he will be her fourth husband. There are also two other families in the same county census several pages from Evins but possibly relations:
      (1) Abigail Brandon 57, Leah F. O'Banion 33, and Orson F. O'Banion 5; (2) Nancy Hitchcock 36, Jesse Hitchcock 11, Emma H. Hitchcock 3, Mary E. Hitchcock 1, James O'Banion 17, Samuel Steel 6, Malissa Steel 3, Mary Taylor 65.]

1852 Iowa: the census has E. Obanion in Harrison Pct., Pottawattamie, IA, p. 25. This census is statistical and only lists head of household with numbers of males, females, and voters. It is not very helpful for families or positively identifying a given individual.

1854 County: Magnolia Township, Harrison County, Iowa State Census
Evins Obanion, 4 males, 1 female, 1 voter, 5 total.

1856 Iowa: Magnolia, Harrison, IA, dwelling and family 38:
Evans Obanion, 57, KY, farmer, 11 years in Iowa.
Malinda, 30, marr., TN, 7 years in Iowa.
Jasper, 17, IL, 11 years in Iowa. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Jasper O'Banion marrying Margaret Dunham, 1 Jan 1858.]
      Charles A., 4, 4 years in Iowa.
Calvin, 2, 2 years in Iowa.
Phobe, 0, 0 years in Iowa.

1860 US: Magnolia, Harrison, IA on p. 816, dwelling 481, family 427 (living next door is Jasper Obanion, 24, IL; Margaret, 20, IL; Mary C., 1, IA; and Cornelius Meadows, farmhand, KY [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Jasper marrying Margaret Dunham 1 Jan 1858.]):
      Evins O'Banion, 61, farmer, $1000, $600, KY.
      Melinda, 36, KY.
Charles, 6, IA. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Chas marrying Rachel Palmer 18 Feb 1872.]
Calvin N., 5, IA. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Calvin marrying D. Maynard 10 Jun 1862. Also Calvin's descendant Teresa Garlock indicates correct middle initial is M. for Monroe.]
Phebe A., 4, IA. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows J.N. Morton marrying Phoebe O'Banion 23 Dec 1872.]
Jesse P., 3, IA. [Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Jesse marrying Vandalia Lee 17 Jul 1881.]

1870 US: Book and computer index searched for O'Banions in Nebraska without success [family of Jasper o'Banion, 32, with 7 total individuals is in Boyer Twp., Dunlap, Iowa]; checked the following Iowa townships page by page without success: Harrison County: Boyer, Cincinnati, Magnolia, Raglan, and Harrison; Monona: All townships. There is a Chas. O'Banion, 17, IA working as a single man in the household of Austin N. Patton in Magnolia. Also in Magnolia is John W. O'Banion, 33, house carpenter, KY and family. In Dunlap, Boyer, Harrison Co. is Jasp. N. O'Banion, 32, farmer, IL and family. In Nazoo P.O., Cincinnati Twp., harrison Co, is Phebee O'Banian, 15, domestic servant in the John W. Cokely household, IA.

      5. Nancy White married Evans O'Banion in 1868 and he died in 1874. By 1875 Nancy signs her name as Nancy Allen for consent for her daughter Emma's marriage to Charles Taylor in 1875. The 1870 census would be most helpful on the O'Banion family grouping especially since it should also have her 15 year old daughter Emma Jeanette Allen also listed. I cannot find the 1870 census for them but I can find them all in 1860 and Nancy and Emma in 1880. Evans' son Jasper is in Boyer, Iowa - but Evans doesn't show.

      6. On file from Jeannie Aldredge, I have a 40 page Nancy Fountain White descendancy listing with research notes. I have cited all information concerning this specific individual into these notes.

      b. The book "Mormon Redress Petitions, Documents of the 1833-1838 Missouri Conflict," edited by Clark V. Johnson, contains a copy of the "Scroll Petition" dated 28 Nov 1843 at Nauvoo, IL addressed to the U.S. Congress by members of the LDS Church who had property destroyed by Missouri mobs in the 1830's. Included with over a couple thousand signatures are Eivn [typo?], George, Mary Jane, John, James, and "Jaspher" O'Banion.

      3. Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/twp/twpboyer.htm provides a quote from the "1868 History and Description of Harrison County": "Leaving Harrison township on the north and proceeding down the Boyer Valley, we come to Boyer township. Boyer township is bunded on the north by Harrison and Lincoln townships, on the east by Shelby county, on the south by Jefferson and Cass and on the west by Magnolia township. The settlement of this township commenced in the year 1851. Among the first settlers were Richard Musgrave, Evans Obanion, Thos. Thompson, J. Jeffrey, Geo. Medford, Matthew Hall and Lorenzo Butler... [A lengthy description of the township and its history follows.]... In the summer of of 1865 [in the country around Woodbine], three little girls about 5 or 6 years old, went to the Boyer (near where the woolen factory now is) to bathe. Two of them, one daughter of John Obanion, the other daughter of James Foster, wading too deep. The other seeing them struggle, ran as fast as she could to the house and gave the alarm. The agonizing parents were soon on the ground, but it was too late, and the little ones were dead..."

      BIRTH:
      1. The book "Membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830-1848," FHL 289.3-Ea85m, compiled by Susan Ward Easton-Black, entry for "Obanion, Evans" references "Early Church File" which microfilm I reviewed the LDS History Library in Salt Lake City. The "File" sources its information from records of the "Seventies. Bk. B., p. 260, 35th [or 36th - poor handwriting] Quorum" and indicates he was born 22 Apr 1799, that his father was James, and that he was baptized Mar. 1835 by L. Miller. Black's book shows no other infomation except Ordinance Index entries since 1955 including the marriages of only Jane Hawley and Mary Ann Cole. No indication of living Nauvoo temple work. He is not in Black's similar book of RLDS members.

      2. Most online Ordinance Index entries seem to coalesce to 22 Apr 1799 in Washington Co., KY to parents James O'Banion and Mary Mason. A date variation is 14 Apr 1799. Per email of Mona Sarratt Knight : Lincoln Co., KY, 1789 early tax records list a James O'Bannon; Jefferson Co., KY, 1789 lists a Jno. Obannon; Barron Co., KY, head of household lists Jos. Obannion.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Ancestral File reports earliest marriage to Margaret Hall, b. abt. 1810 of Morgan Co., IL, m. bef. 1810. No entry in Ordinance Index.

      2. A marriage between Evan O'Banion, age 45, and Mary Ann Cole 30 Apr 1844 at, Adams, IL in with sealing 16 Jan 1975 per FHL film 934234, sht. 66, batch 7413703. Parents for Evan are noted as James O'Bannon and Mary Mason. Variance include Even O'Banion (b. 22 Apr 1799 at Washington Co., KY, parents James O'Banion and Mary Mason) and Mary Ann Cole (b. 27 Dec 1823 at Salisbury, Somerset, PA and d. 24 Apr 1896 at Cache Co., UT, parents as Barnet Cole and Phoebe Van Alstyne) sealed 19 Apr 1967 IFALL per FHL film 471955.

Parents for Evan are noted as James O'Bannon and Mary Mason and for Jane as John Hawley and Mary Wells. Variance on this marriage include spouse's name as Jane Hawley (his as Even O'Bannion b. 22 Apr 1799 in Kentucky) mar. 7 Sep 1849 with sealing 27 Mar 1956 SLAKE per FHL film 444953, ref. 33523. Online Ancestry Plus references the book "Early American Marriages: Iowa to 1850" by Jordan R. Dodd and provides: "Booth, Jane married Obanion, Evins on 7 Sep 1849 in Pottawattamie Co., Iowa." (also confirmed per FHL book 977.771 V2p" Pottawattamie Co., IA Early Marriages 1848-1869." Entry found also in FHL book 977.771 V2k "Vital Statistics from the Frontier Guardian, Kanesville, IA, Feb. 1849 - Jan 1852": "Hymneal. At Kanesville, Sept. 7th, by Lyman Stoddard, Mr. Evins O. Banion, to Miss Jane Booth, both of Kanesville."

      4. Malinda Smith: Noted in 1856 and 1860 censuses above. Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County shows Evans O'Banion marrying Malinda Smith 5 Mar 1854.] Reference to marriage is also in FHL book 977.747 H2n "History of Harrison County, IA," 1891, p. 77: "...the first of which we find a record. It shows the following: [4th marriage listed] May 5, 1854, Evans Obanion and Malinda Smith were united by P.G. Cooper, County Judge."

      5. Nancy White: No entry in Ordinance Index. Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm has an 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County. Entries:
"Emma J. Allen and Chas. Taylor 7/21/1875"
"Nancy Allen and Evans O'Banion 7/5/1868"
I looked up two films 1513295 it. 3-5 (which was a poorly kept book of granted marriage licenses) and 1513294 (which was the recording of marriages giving only the groom and bride's names and who performed the marriage). There was no license shown in the first film. The second film had the same exact information as the index.
There is also a previous marriage for "Evens O'Banion and Malinda Smith" dated 5 Mar 1854 with license dated 4 Mar 1854.

      DEATH:
      1. One online ordinance Index entry reports death as 9 Jun 1874.

      2. 1880 US census for his wife Nancy shows her without him by 1880.

      3. Jeannie Aldredge lists 9 Jun 1874 in Dunlap, Harrison, Iowa.

      BURIAL:
      1. Jeannie Aldredge notes burial June 1874, 1 mile west of Dunlap, Harrison County, Iowa at Valley View/Dunham Cemetery. Occupation is farmer, religion is Mormon, row 2. Inscription on tombstone reads: E. O'Banion, aged 75 yrs 1 m 25 days. Died June 9, 1874." No Nancy O'Banion nor anyone with the name of Nancy nearby. The Valley View Cemetery is on the Dunham farm property in Boyer Twp., Crawford, Iowa near the county line of Harrison and Crawford Counties. Evans' son Jasper married Margaret Dunham.
