      2. Archival Research Paper about Herzenberg Family prepared for Kerry Petersen 28 Feb 2011 and is report no. Nr. 3-P-272, 2816, 1927 N, by Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs (Latvian National Archives), Slokas iela 16, Riga, LV-1007. Complete transcript is in the notes of Edouard/Elias Ocipovitch Herzenberg and the following is but a partial transcript:
"The recruits' enlistment registers of the Jewish families belonging to Pilten for 1842, 1848, 1854, 1871, the revision lists of the Jewish families belonging to Pilten, set up on August 15 of 1851, the merchant's lists of Goldingen for 1868, 1874, 1875 contain the following information about Herzenberg family (we would like to draw your attention to the fact that very often the age of person was determined by their outward appearance and was stated in some documents rather approximately)...
1.3.4. Jossel (Joseph), son of Lemchen Herzenberg, born in ca 1809 (aged 33 in 1842, aged 59 in 1868). His wife Zippe was horn in ca 1808 (aged 60 in 1868). The family of Jossel Herzenberg was registered in the petty bourgeois oklad in Pilten till 1851. In 1851 he with his family was registered as a merchant of 3rd guild in Piltene. Since 1862 and at least till 1877 Joseph, son of Lemchen Herzenberg and his family was registered in the merchant oklad of Goldingen (see merchants list of Goldingen for 1868). His sons...
1.3.4.2. son Laser, born in ca 1829. His wife Amalie, born in ca 1834. In 1875 he was registered as a merchant of Goldingen. They had at least ten children. According to the 1st All Russian census for 1897 the family of Laser Herzenberg lived in Goldingen at Mitauskaya Street 11...
KP Note: Attachments: Image of revision list of Jewish families belonging to Pilten as of Aug. 15, 1851, showing oklad (tax) numbers: #362 Jossel Lemchen Herzenberg, his sons: #363 Ruben, #364 Laser, #365 Jacob, #366 Levin, and #367 Elias. Researcher includes interpretation comment: "They were transferred from the membership of petty bourgeois oklad of Pilten to the 3rd guild merchant of Pilten in 1851."

      3. Data from a copy captured of Peter Bruce Herzenberg's website of London, England, since relocated to South Africa (website is no longer functioning as of 7 Aug 2007). See more on his research and data in the notes of the earliest Herzenberg in this database. Source given is HL wihich is for Leonardo Herzenberg. In regards to this individual:
Name variations: Eleazar, Leizer, Laser (Lasar) (Lazar), Leiser.
HL 103/013, b. abt 1848 at Goldingen, md. Amalie Hirshman.

      4. Originally we had different children assigned to Eleazer and Amalie until we received the Archival report above. Peter Herzenberg on his comprehensive Herzenberg listing had shown six different children as of 2010 in his family group 4.11a: Isaac 1863, Samuel 1867, Bernard, Herman 1870, Edward 1875, and Leo 1878 (listed as #5.17 - 5.22). Peter sources his information back to Leo Herzenberg, but Leo's information conflicts with other information of Leo's found in the "Leonard Herzenberg Memoirs." The memoirs follows the merchant's lists very closely. I made the correction 30 Nov 2011. The Memoirs read:
"GREAT-UNCLE LAZER I had met [64] in Goldingen, also his wife Amalie Hirschman. They had a beautiful house in Goldingen with a huge orchard, and it was said of the aunt that she made the workers sing songs during the harvest so they would not snack on the fruit. That counted in those days as the peak of avarice. In those days, in the country, one "stos" (about a liter) of berries, whether blueberries, strawberries, or Johannberries sold for a kopeck, around a penny, and other fruit was similarly cheap. Their children were Leonhard, Isidor, Edward, Moritz, Robert, Johanna, Bertha, Rosa, Sara, and Dorothea. I knew only Moritz, who carried on the father's business in Goldingen. he was married to Rosa Steinberg and had a single daughter Lina. I also met one of the daughters, I no longer know which one; She was very pretty [65] and well educated, but even more conceited [sehr gebildet, aber noch mehr eingebildet], and when I was in her home still as a student she behaved very haughtily. That happened because the families of the great-uncle were mostly very wealthy, and looked down on the generation of my parents who already found the fight for existence much more difficult, as if they were poor relations."

      5. Ancestry.com's "Latvia: Courland Registers and Family Lists, 1845-1874" in partnership with JewishGen lists the following from Kuldiga: "Lasar Herzenberg, b. abt. 1829, record year: 1871, father Joseph."

      6. The Latvian Archives is online and I have reviewed all Registers for Pilten. Registers are in German and I indicate what I don't understand. I extracted all Herzenbergs of which the following excerpts apply to this family:
