Note also that this was about a year after Mary Ann died and the family already appears broken up with the daughters living elsewhere.):

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. From FHL film 485343 - Federal Writers Project - WPA by Mabel Jarvis, St. George, UT. Excerpts from the Journal of Joel H. Johnson:
      P. 70. "April 25 [1878] To day I married my daughter Margaret, by my wife Janet, to David Frederick
      'God bless and Preserve them
      From folly and Strife
      With Bountiful Increase
      And Pleasure through life.'"
      P. 78. "June 5, 79. Started for Hillsdale in company with my little son Ezekial who drove my carriage and also with my Son-in-law David Frederick, who drove a team for me loaded with dried fruit and dry goods which I took over to pay for work on the mill, but when I came there I was told by my son Seth that on account of the extreme drouth at Johnson and vicinity, President Snow had released my son Sixtus from the office of Bishop at Johnson and advised him to move his flocks of sheep, goats and cattle into Arizona and told him that I had better go with him if I still wanted to go."
      P. 85. "Jan. 7th [1880] Today I received the news of the death of my daughter Margaret (by my wife Janet). She was the wife of David Frederick Jun. She died in child bed Dec. 19th, 1879, aged 29 years and nine month. Born on the 19th of March 1850. She was a kind, faithful and affectionate young woman. Her child, a daughter, still born, at Hilldale, Iron County, Utah."

      2. David Jr. is mentioned in family letters written by David Frederick to his daughter Mary Elizabeth who was living in Salt Lake City while David was in San Bernardino. Dave Fry, a cousin of mine living in Texas, who is descended through Gideon and Mary Elizabeth (Frederick) Gibbs was visiting his sister in 2003 in Salt Lake City. He went through an old valise of records left by their parents where they found a photo of David Frederick, and six handwritten original letters - two of which refer to David, Jr.:

      3. Mentioned in lengthy biography about Ellen Sophia DeGraw and her family in the book "Life History of Jacob, Sophia DeGraw Family," by Ruby Henson Behrman Packer, 5947 S. 3650 W., Roy, Utah, 801-985-7100, microfilm copy FHL film 573528. For transcription of biography see notes of Ellen DeGraw in this database. Book has several photos and are in my files.

      4. David Sr. would be about 62-63 and David Jr. would be about 9 in the following journal entry from Caroline Barnes Crosby. This passage has been sent to me by Sue Payne of San Bernardino who is one of the editors of the 2005 book having the first half of Caroline's journals. The second half which contains this passage has not been published as of July 2005. The entry in context:
"Wed Apr 1st my carders came some of them at an early hour. Sisters Andrews Thomas, Stevens, Steward, Willis, Lucinda Lee, and two sisters Coxes. They did a good days work, carded about 2 1/2 pounds. I entertained them to the best of my ability. Enjoyed their company finely, and was very thankfull for their kindness.
Thurs 2nd felt very unwell again from over exertion. Frid 3rd still unwell.
Sat 4th some better, spun a skein. Mr C- bought me a pound of tea of S Serine
Sun 5th very blustering, was quite unwell, and lay in bed a greater part of the Am Much troubled with nervousness, slept very little for four successive nights.
      Mon 6th - -
Tues 7th John Young called and ate breakfast on his way to the States. Evening went into Ann L's to see sister Abbott
Wed 8th received a visit from sis Abbott, Ellen, Ann L, and two sister Elmers.
Thurs 9th Tremendous wind. Dan Martins wedding day. Alma went, and took Lucinda Lee, pm snowed. A played for dance.
Frid 10th nothing worthy of notice
Sat 11 sister Lois birth day.
Sun 12th bro Frederick brought us his son David, and requested us to keep him. Evening I went with husband to Sam Whites.
Here, on this one page of her journal, Caroline's normally fastidious handwriting quite unexpectedly worsens, and then two-thirds of the way down the page, an obvious change in ink marks the renewal of her journal after being untended for over a year.
The following entry - is this a duplicate description of B. Young's earlier visit, or a second visit? Check JH. Also, discuss all the important things here, ie. Addison Pratt's visit to Beaver. Also, document the paper on which the journal is being written.
May 1st "64 <1864> over a year has passed away and I have neglected my journal carding, spining, and weaving has taken so much of my time, also the great scarcity, and high price of paper, has been a very important obstacle in the way of journal keeping. But I now desire to resume it, and pray that I may be blest in so doing.
(An aged widower, David Frederick, formerly of San Bernardino, recognized Caroline as an excellent surrogate mother for his son, [he perhaps in bad health] son with Caroline later - [something in personal correspondence?])

      5. The book "No Place to Call Home, the Life Writings of Caroline Barnes Crosby, Chronicler of Outlying Mormon Communities," 2005, Edward Leo Lyman and Susan Ward Payne, editors, had the diaries of Caroline through 1857 in San Bernardino, California. Caroline had known George and Hanna Winner in San Francisco. She had also known Ebenezer and Jane Hanks who later adopted David's sister Martha. David and Caroline Crosby arrived in Beaver in late 1858 and there they remained the rest of their lives - she died in 1883. David, Jr. lived with the Crosbys for four years after the death of his mother in 1859. With Caroline's past history of keeping Children, it is regrettable she didn't document the years David was with her. It appears the relationship was a good one and their reacquaintance was welcoming. The first big trip they made was the one to the St. George temple the last of June 1878. Here is the passage of their return from the later unpublished part of her journals as given me by Sue Payne May 2006:
[1878] "Mon July 1st we bade goodby to our St G friends, and left for home. We found the roads about the same as we left them only a little more dusty. We had rain going down, but none in coming back. The 1st night stoped in Bellview, at bro Bays, They treated us with much kindness, and let us have some fruit to bring home. I called at Joel Johnsons, his first wife Susan was not home, saw Janette, and her daughter Margaret who has latly married David Fredrick, the boy who lived with us. July 2nd we arrived in Cedar city put up at sister Spikings, found her rather poorly. Put up team at bro Lunts, Mr C- took his supper there. 3rd we came to Buckhorn springs put up with Martha Hyat, who was there keeping house for her sister while she came to visit her mother and friend in Beaver."
[1878 in Beaver, Utah] "Sun Sept 1st, I felt rather feeble Laid down awhile. I feared I should not be able to attend the Pm meeting. But after taking a little dinner I felt some better and so crowded myself out. I felt bad at my stomach, and prayed that partaking of the sacrament might relieve me, and my prayer was answered, in so much that when the meeting closed, I was feeling quite well. ^At 5 pm there was baptising J Cooms was rebaptised. I was pleased to hear it^ Pm called old bro Frederick, and his son David, who lived 4 years with us when a small boy. He is now a married man, lives in Bellview. Kane county. Utah. David had been north, and found his father and was taking him south with him. He is 77 years old, but very smart, and still works on."
Another entry a year later: [1879] "June Frid 6th came to Bellview called at Joel Johnsons, took dinner with his wife Janette. Her daughter Maggie had married David Frderick, and lived in the same house. They were very kind. We brought a woman and two children from there to St George by the name of Carlin, a daughter of Joseph Jo.[sic] Her husband paid us 2 dolls. She seemed an interesting woman. Arrived at Leads put up at George Crosby's, we were treated..."

      6. Copy of letter received from Dave Frye and on file with me addressed to Sarah Gibbs by Ellen DeGraw Frederick (wife of David Frederick, Jr.) with a mention about Martha Catherine Frederick, David Frederick Sr. (Dad) and David Frederick Jr. Martha had evidently just left Michael Stoker and the two children were Mary Grace Shoemaker and Sarah Catherine Stoker. A copy of the envelope with a two cent stamp is included with the letter - it is addressed to Miss Sarah Gibbs, Salt Lake City, 123 N. 40 W. St." with note penciled "rec'd June 27, 1885." The transcription:
"Glendale, June 24th, 1885. Dear Sarah, I recieved [sic] your kind and welcome letter and was glad to hear from you but was very sorry to hear of you looseing your little brother. It must be a terrible blow on your mother. Dad is not here now. He went to Parowan in April to see about his pension. He wrote back that he got there all right and found many warm friends. I also received a letter from Martha. She has left her husband again. She has got two children. I have got a baby boy 13 months old. Dad alway said that he reminded him so much of Frankey that he could not help loving him. David is not at home at present but I think he will be home in a few days then we are a going to move to Castle valley. There is not much new to write. Hoping this finds you as it leaves us all well. I remain as ever your friend. Ellen G. Frederick. You must not forget to write again. Please direct to Muddy Creek, Emery Co., Utah."

      7. Family story provided by Angelina Lloyd by email dated 27 Jan 2014 : "I know my grandma used to tell me of a story when she was little and her dad Willis Frederick was working on the railroad (as a bridge foreman) but their grandpa David (Jr.) was there for breakfast and a man dressed in white came to their house and asked for food and when he left he told her mother [Perchy Dickerson] they would never want for food. He then disappeared. We are pretty sure it was one of the 3 Nephites or John who still walk the earth."

      BIRTH:
      1. Ordinance Index cited below gives data as reported by David himself.

      2. Per archival family group records prepared by Enid Willardson; she gives no documentation. 1900 census supports same 1854 date; however, Burial Index cited below gives 21 Dec 1852 (which year is incorrect).

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Per father-in-law's journal account cited above.

      2. 1880 census shows Ellen unmarried living in Hillsdale just a couple of houses from David Frederick. Marriage of Jan 1880 reported on some family group sheets seems to be in error and marriage most likely occurred after census in June of 1880. Temple sealing ordinance occurred 10 Feb 1881 in the St. George temple and they did not live far enough away to have needed a civil marriage before.

      DEATH:
      1. Utah State Historical Society Burials Database, online: David Fredrick, b. 21 Dec 1852 in California, d. 21 Mar 1923 in Burbank, Utah, bur. at Monroe City Cemetery, 022-C, parents are David and Mary Fredrick. [Note date of birth is 1852 in lieu of traditional 1854.] Some family group sheets indicate death place may be Milford, Beaver, Utah. I use the Burial Index info. Death certificate states specifically Burbank and not Milford.

      2. The death certificate states that he died from exposure while traveling in a snow storm.

      BURIAL:
      1. Per Burial Index cited above. Also see death certificate.

      OBITUARY:
      1. Not in FHL Obituary Index for Salt Lake City.

      2. News article in the newspaper "Richfield Reaper," 29 Mar 1923: "David Frederick Found Dead. Word was received here of the death of David Frederick, an old Monroe citizen, in Pine Valley, Nevada, either Friday or Saturday. He left here a week ago to go to Nevada, where his son Ira resides. Full particulars were not received here but the news was to the effect that the team and wagon went into a camp without a driver and upon investigation by those at the camp, they found the man dead by the roadside. His son, Ralph Frederick, who is employed at the Alunite mine at Marysvale was notified and came to Monroe Monday to make arrangements to have the body brought here for burial. He left Tuesday, accompanied by Vivian Tuft with a truck and expected to make the trip to Milford and return Tuesday night or Wednesday forenoon. The funeral will in all probability be held Thursday. Mr. Frederick resided in Monroe, but he had no relatives here, his daughter, Mrs. George Sydall living in Cedarview, a son, Ira, in Nevada and Alfred in Salt Lake. He has many friends here who will be shocked to hear of his sad death."
