      1. The book "The Phelps Family of America and their English Ancestors," comp. by Oliver Seymour Phelps of Portland, Oregon and Andrew T. Servin of Lenox, Massachusetts, 1899, pp. 108-109:
      "Joseph Phelps, b. Windsor, Ct., 27 Sep 1666, m. Sarah Hosford, 18 Nov 1686, dau. of John and Phillury (Thrall) Hosford, she b. Windsor, Ct., 27 Sept 1666, the same day as her husband. Her father was a man of large family and considerable property, leaving her at his death 100 pounds. She died probably in Hebron. Mr. Phelps settled in Windsor, where his children were all born. He owned a large amount of land in Hebron, and probably removed there late in life, about 1710, where some of his children were living. He died 30 Aug 1716, aged fifty year. His will dated 23 Aug 1716, probated Hartford probate records, Vol. 9. He appoints his wife, Sarah, executrix, and mentions 10 children, Joseph, Daniel, Edward, John, Abel, Ichabod, Jonathan, Mary, Sarah and Abigail. Inventory of estate 2 Oct 1716, gives age of children, Edward about 18, John 16, Mary 13, Abel - , Ichabod 9. Samuel and William Phelps were appointed guardians, while the mother was appointed guardian for Jonathan and Abigail. Children b. Windsor, Conn.:

Windsor; owned large tract of land in Hebron, CT, and poss. res. there latter part of his life, as a number of his children settled there; he m. 18 Nov 1686, Sarah (dau. John) Hosford, b. same day and year as her husband; he d. 30 Aug 1716. Hartford Prob. Records, Vol. 9, gives will of Joseph Phelps, Sr., of Windsor, dated 23 Aug 1716. He appointed his wife Sarah ex. and mentions 'my ten children: Joseph, Daniell, Edward, John, Abell, Icabod, Jonathan, Mary, Sarah, Abigail.' Inventory of estate 2 Oct 1716, gives ages of ch.; Edward, abt. 18; John, abt. 16; Mary, abt. 13; Abell, abt. 11; Ichabod, abt. 9; have Samuel and William Phelps appointed guardians, while the mother Sarah is appointed guardian to Jonathan and Abigail. Of these Hosford Children, Timothy and Samuel both married daughters of Nicholas Palmer and Nathaniel, Obadiah and Sarah all married children of Joseph Phelps, a grandson of the magistrate."
