    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. The following are the results from my Jun 2009 research trip to the Hexham Public Library, the Northumberland Records Office at Woodhorn, and the Durham Records Office in Durham City. The Hexham Library is of no value except for a few transcription books of nearby parishes. The other two Archives are serious facilities for which we did not have adequate time. For purposes of my research, I consider the names Burnhope, Burnop, Burnup, and Burnip to all be variations of the same name - in fact to this day Burnhope is pronounced Burnup locally. This work was from parish transcription books and not from actual films or actual registers [my comments in brackets]. It certainly is not 100% comprehensive and further work is required especially in co. Durham. My search was focused in an expanding search from just south of Hexham. Our earliest Burnhope ancestral entry thus far is from Hunstantworth, which lies near the county line between counties Durham and Northumberland. It appears that co. Durham is the most likely ancestral home of the Burnhopes. All baptisms and marriages were added by myself to NFS.:

      B. NORTHUMBERLAND Records Office at Woodhorn:
      a. Haydon Bridge baptisms (1654-1665 and 1677-1991), marriages 1655-1754 and 1786-1900 with none between 1754-1786), and burials (1653-1991):
      i. Baptisms: there are only two sets of Burnhopes listed - seven children of Joseph Burnhope and Elizabeth and the first five children of Joseph Burnhope (1811-1881) and Ann Hunter. [Both families are in this database - see their notes for details.]
ii. Burials: only one burial for Elizabeth Burnhope, dau. of Joseph, Haydon Bridge, 21, 11 Oct 1809. [This person is in our database.] [Apparently this record is not as complete as others since there are at least four other Burnhopes buried in Haydon Bridge related to us as noted in other entries below.]
iii. Marriages: there are no Burnhope entries.
      b. Allendale (St. Cuthbert's):
      i. Burials 1690-1761 [According to New Family Search accessed 3 Aug 2009, William appears to be married to Mary Bateman and these are all of their children with the exception of Isaac who is their grandson. William's line appears to come from the Wolsingham, Durham area and there is no apparent direct tie yet to our family even though Carr-Shield is not too far from Isaac's Newbiggin. The Isaac in the following list appears to have died as an infant.]:
-Robert Bunop, son of Wm, 14 Jan 1732, Carr-Shield, Alston Church Yard.
-Wm. Burnhup, 15 Nov 1741, Hunter Gap, Church Yard.

-Thomas Burnop, son of William, miner. Coalcleugh. L. Church Yard.
ii. Burials 1761-Jun 1837, the following is only a year index and the original register needs to be reviewed for Burnhope entries:

-26 Jun 1785, Jane Burnup, dau. of William, hatter. [Could this be an error in the record for Thomas, hatter, since the birth would be more in line with Thomas and Ann Mills who married in 1783 as noted above/]
