    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Censuses:
1800 US: Ashe County, North Carolina. The total population for Ashe County, North Carolina in 1800 was 2785, including slaves. The 1800 Ashe County Census was the first for the northwestern most county in the Tar Heel State. This county was formed in late 1799 and included all of Wilkes County west of the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountain. The 977 square miles that then composed Ashe County has been further divided, first in 1849 to form Watauga County, North Carolina and again 10 years later to form Alleghany County. This record includes families who may have been living in those areas at the time. The original census was in rough alphabetic order, and this does not facilitate the research of particular communities. I include all interrelated families of this time and place to better show relationships. A word of explanation on some of these families:
      A. Mary and Barbara Burkett who married Peter and David Graybeal, had a father named Christian - unsure as to which is correct of the two.
      B. Elizabeth Eller appears to be Elizabeth Dick, the wife of Peter Eller who had just died per his probate of 1799.The one daughter is probably Mary; unsure who the two boys are since there should be three: Jacob, Henry, and George. John Eller would be Elizabeth's eldest son and married to Susannah Kerns.
      C. Henry Graybeal would have recently married Celia Henson and also the eldest son of [John] Peter and Christina [Wampler] Graybill who also appear to be in this same census. Note that Peter evidently had owned slaves at that time - the census does not say how many.
      D. One of the William Hensons could be somehow related to William Henson who marries Nancy Graybill and to Celia Henson who marries Henry Graybeal.
      E. The two Koons are probably brothers and are sons of Devault Koon judging from their ages. This would make them uncles to George Koons who eventually marries Mary Eller.
      F. James Lewis, b. abt. 1790, marries Christena Graybill in 1807 - there may be a connection with these two James Lewis.
      G. William Pennington marries Barbara (or Elizabeth) Eller and may be the younger of the two here listed.
      H. Michael Stucker is a misspelling for Michael and Catherine Eller Stoker with their three oldest children: Polly, David, and Elizabeth.

      2. Per website http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/ashe1815.htm: "Ashe County, North Carolina - 1815 Tax List. Ashe County, North Carolina was formed in 1799 from Wilkes County. From 1799 until 1859, Ashe County included the most of the land now included in Alleghany and Watauga Counties, and part of what is now Avery County, North Carolina. In 1815, Ashe County was bounded by Carter County, Tennessee on the west, Grayson County, Virginia on the north, by Surry and Wilkes Counties on the east and Burke County, North Carolina on the South. This list was abstracted and totals were combined for brevity for individuals with multiple tracts of land. I abstracted this document years ago and omitted portions that I wish I hadn't now. Don't take it as absolutely accurate. Five categories are given: Name, number of acres of land, valuation in dollars, polls, and local situation or name of neighbors. I added the number of tracts of land in the consolidation process." [He did not get the parts of Ashe County that are now part of Alleghany and Watauga Counties. Also no Stokers found.]:

      3. Found at least two of her children in Jackson County, Ohio in 1860 census:
Elijah Henson, 56, NC. (Also in 1850: age 46, NC)
Larkin Henson, 55, KY. (Madison Twp.)
Also found in the Bloomfield, Jackson, Ohio 1850 census, James Lackey (father of Alexander Lackey who married Catherine Stoker), age 80, VA with several other Lackeys and a Mary Henson, age 43, with her family - possibly Mary was a Lackey who married a Henson.

      4. Graybill/Stoker/Eller/Smith/Koons/Pitt Connections," by Norman E. 'Gene' Pitt, 1996, pp. 6-8: "Nancy Mary Graybill, b. 9 Jun 1789, Jefferson, Wilkes, Co. (now Ashe Co.), NC; d. 19 Dec 1856, Jackson Co., OH; md. abt 1804, Ashe Co., NC to William Henson. He was b. abt 1774, Wilkes Co., NC; d. abt 1820/30, New Orleans, LA; bur. New Orleans, LA. Their children were Elijah, Eli, Larkin, Mary and Lydia."

      5. Notes from Rootsweb.com Worldconnect 17 Feb 2004 database ":480580" of Donna Shell :
      A. "A Partial Genealogy Record of the Graybeal Family of Ashe Co., NC," 1992 Edition, by William S. Graybeal, p. 259. B. Articles in book, "Heritage of Ashe Co., NC"; pgs. 263-272. [Kerry's note: I reviewed this book at FHL in Salt Lake City - FHL book 975.6835 D3h V.1] C. Deed: Henson, William to: Morris, Gilbert 1809-08-01; 100.00 a., Waters of Little Horse Creek/North Fork New River; $, Rcd: 1811-05, Bk: D, p. 299; witnesses: Henry Graybeal, Henry Chambers. [Note that the 1800 census shows two William Hensons in the area - one older and one younger - and this deed could be for either one.]: D. Some of the info. on William and his descendants was given to me in a letter by Reba Graybeal, dtd. 9 Sept. 1990. All of the same information was sent to Reba by Florence (Graybill) Wilson of Omaha, NE in Oct., 1963. "William lived near Lexington, KY and worked on the Miss. River. He was born abt 1785. Died at New Orleans, LA and presumed to have been buried there. After his death, John Graybill (Nancy Mary's bro.) moved the family to NC, where the children were raised. John Graybill who took care of the family was said to be very wealthy." (He was never married). Nancy and her brother, John, went to Ohio with their father, Peter Sr. (Donna's note: I now think that William died abt 1815, and John took his sister, Nancy back to Jackson Co., OH, where Peter Sr. and part of his family had moved in 1815.)

      6. FHL Book 929.273EL54h "George Michael Eller and Descendants of His in America," compiled by James W. Hook, 1957, also on FHL film 896571, item 2, pp. 17-31, clarifies early North Carolina counties and land grant practices:
"Land grants in North Carolina originated with an entry application which was filed in the county where the land was situated and if not lost are now on file there. This was followed, sometimes soon and sometimes years later by an order from the land office for the tract to be surveyed. Sometimes soon and sometimes years later the survey was made and a surveyor's plat filed with the Secretary of State in Raleigh. Then came the grant which may have been issued reasonably near the date of the survey or sometimes several years later. These grants, orders to survey and the survey itself are on file now in the Secretary of State's office at Raleigh...
Many counties were formed from what originally was Rowan County, namely Surry and Guilford in 1770, Burke and Wilkes in 1777, Randolph in 1779, Iridell in 1788, Stokes in 1789, Buncomb in 1791, Ashe in1799, Davidson in 1822, Yancey in 1833, Davie in 1836 and Yadkin in 1850. Some of these counties were grandchildren of Rowan County; for instance Wilkes was taken partly from Burke and partly from Surry, Randolph from Guilford, Buncomb and Yancy form Burke, Ashe from Wilkes and Stokes and Yadkin from Surry. These facts must be kept in mind when tracing early Rowan County families."

      7. FHL book 929.273 H198me (film #6003742), "Hanson, Henson, Hinson, Hynson, and Allied Family Name; Early Records of the Carolinas," by Ethel Nerim Miner, 1993. The following is from vol. 3 of 5 which is just focused on the Carolinas. Note that author extracted all references from all sources but does not give an explanation of her sources - she does say: "If this space is empty caution should be used in accepting the information as fact. May be combined with information from the even field to provide more meaningful information. If no original source is shown that probably means the information was submitted by a contributor from a family history or similar source. I include notes for both William and Celia Henson, who are in my database and possibly siblings:
-Celia Henson; spouse Henry Graybeal, m. @ North Carolina in 1802; source (more of a note): "NC Ashe of."
-Eli Hanson, s. of William and ___ Graybeal, b. 5 Mar 1807, at NC; no source given.
-Eli Hanson, s. of William and ___ Graybeal, d. @ 1832, at NC; no source given.
-Elijah Hanson, s. of William; spouse: Amery; b. 1804, at NC; note mom was a Graybeal; no source given.
-Larkin Henson, s. of William Sr. and ___ Graybeal; residence at Ashe Co., NC, in 1788; no source given.
-Mary Henson, d. of William and ___ Graybeal; b. 1810 at NC; no source given.
-William Henson Sr. and Nancy Graybeal; birth of son Eli, 5 Mar 1807, in NC (with a note "KY?"); no source given.

      8. FHL book "Hansons-Hensons of Botetourt and their Descendants; Thirty Years of Notes and Reminiscencing about the Hansons, also known in the Literature as Hensons and Hinsons," comp. by Ray Hanson and other researchers; 50 copies printed, 1986. Mr. Hanson, gives various anecdotal statements of several William Hanson/Henson/Hinson's including one that pertains to our William (I do not agree with the supposed dates of this compiler):
      P. 130: "William Hanson m. Nancy Graybeal daughter of Peter Graybeal Ashe Co., N.C. William b. 1785. Nancy b. 1802."
      P. 141, Mr. Hanson, proposes a family tree incorporating Celia Henson and William, both in my database:
      1. Mr. Henson
      2. Elijah Henson
      2. Celia Henson
      2. (a daughter)
      2. William Henson, m. Nancy Graybeal born in 1802, the daughter of Peter Graybeal of Ashe County, N. Carolina. Wm. born 1785; d. at New Orleans. (Mrs. Stanley Morgan of Jackson, Ohio, says Wm. Henson worked on the Mississippi river at Jackson, died and was buried at Jackson. John Graybeal, a brother-in-law returned William's family to Ashe, then to Jackson County, and last, to Bloomfield Twp. of Jackson.)
      3. Elijah Hanson, m. Amery ___, in 1804. (Adopted surname spelling of Hanson.) Had Children: Garilda, b. 1832, Ohio; Nancy, b. 1835 was in Jackson Co. in 1820 Bloomfield Township; Worthington, b. 1837; Elizabeth, b. 1839; Aaron, b. 1841; John, b. 1843.
      3. Eli Hanson, b. Mar. 5, 1807, d. 1832. (Adopted surname spelling of Hanson.)
      3. Larkin Henson, born 1807?, m. Nancy Lackery; m.2 Elizabeth ___. [Delineates in detail extensive children and grandchildren of this couple.]
      3. Mary Henson.
      3. Lydia Henson.
Author adds note to the pedigree: "William Henson and wife Nancy Graybeal aka Grabill; Grabil lived in Ashe Co. N.C. in the 1790s, "removing later to Lexington"? One John Hanson's property description in Ashe's Deed Book 1 says his land "lay along the conditioned line of John Graybill in 1796." Just prior to 1790 Samuel, James, William, Joseph and John Hanson II were in Ashe Co. (old Wilkes Co.) By 1800 there were no Hansons or Hensons in these documents provided by Mrs. Dempsie Eller, 2306 Ave. "U," Lubbock, Texas, widow of the former County Clerk of Ashe County who preserved notes on early Ashe residents."

      BIRTH:
      1. 1850 census gives abt. 1785 in Maryland. Reported [by unverified by me] tombstone gives about 1771. Pitt book quoted above gives 9 Jun 1789. I am not sure what is correct and will use Pitt's date for now.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Early Ashe Co. records has several Henson family entries. Also Nancy Henson is living next door to Peter Graybill in the 1820 census and with John Graybill in 1850 census.

      BURIAL:
      1. Photos on file for tombstones in the Callaghan-Madison Furnace Cemetery. Found on the web at http://home.att.net/~anm7/calmadfurcem.html. It is reported that this graveyard was laid out in early days on the Callaghan farm in Madison Twp., Jackson Co. OH. It was later enlarged by adding a bit of land from an adjoining farm and from the old Madison Furnace Company farm. The cemetery is located near the settlement of Rempel. It has been reported by one individual that there may also be an earlier tombstone for Peter Graybill in this cemetery that reads "___ust 1842, aged 8_," but I have not yet been able to verify anything about this earlier stone. I also visited the cemetery in person Sep. 2006 to confirm the following tombstones readings. These stones were all in together:
"Peter Graybill died May 1, 1848, Aged About 80y" (side by side with Christena)
"Christena Wife of Peter Graybill Died Oct 10, 1844 Aged About 84 Yrs." (Side by side with Peter)
"John Grabill Oct. 30, 1866 Aged About 82ys"
Broken tombstone partially read "William Henson died Dec 1856 aged ?5 years" (the broken part is reported to have said Nancy Henson, wife of... Also the tombstone was quite weathered and the 6 on the 1856 was questionable and could have been a 3, 5, or 6.) Another publication reports the stone as "Henson, ___ w/o William d. Dec 19, 1856 age about 85y, footstone A.H. (stone down).
"Nancy Wife of Larkin Henson was born June 15, 1809, Died Dec. 9, 1859" (Larkin was a son of William Henson and Nancy Graybill.)
Two stones each saying "Infant son of Larkin and Nancy Henson" with no dates.

      2. Rootsweb.com Worldconnect database ":480580": "In a letter from Alice (Graybill) Russell of Shreveport, LA, she enclosed a copy of some of The Jackson Co, OH Cemetery records of the Graybill kin. This data had been compiled by Mrs. Robert L. Horton, of 25 Burlington Rd., Jackson Co., OH from the Ohio Records & Pioneer Families, Book 10 - page 20. This page reads as follows: Jackson Co., Ohio Cemeteries: The Callaghan Graveyard 'This graveyard was laid out in early days on the Callaghan farm in Madison Twp., Jackson Co. OH. It was later enlarged by adding a bit of land from an adjoining farm and from the old Madison Furnace Company farm. The cemetery is located near the settlement of Rempel.' The list of names followed. This 'Nancy' being one of the names. She is listed as Nancy, wife of William Henson d. Dec. 19, 1856, aged 85y." [Note: I reconfirmed this 13 Feb 2004 via email with a lookup volunteer . Mr. Hunter has access to this book. My question to him was: "I would appreciate a cemetery book look up at the Callaghan-Madison Furnace Cemetery near Rempel in Madison Twp. for Peter and John Graybill, and for Peter's wife Christena. I have heard there may be two tombstones for Peter Graybill which would be of big interest since one has death date of 1842 and the other 1848. Also for Nancy Henson in same cemetery." He found the following in the book:
"Christena Graybill b., d. 10 Oct 1844 (about 84), (w/o Peter Graybill). N. Henson b., d. 19 Dec 1856 (about 85), (w/o William Henson). They are the only ones listed, no Peter or John Graybill and no William Henson."]
