Pp. 15-19: "The Hartford Probate Records contain the following regarding the settlement of Thomas Barber's estate: 'Barber, Thomas, Windsor, Invt. ₤132-14-00; taken 10, Oct. 1662, by Benj. Newberry and John Moore. 'Court Record, Page 187 - 4 Feb., 1662-3, Invt approved. Samuel was placed with his brother Thomas Barber to learn a trade; Mercy (Mary) Barber was placed with Lt. Walter Fyler and his wife until 18 years of age, unless she marries before, with her Master's and Dame's and eldest brother's approbation; Josias Barber was placed with Dea. John Moore until 21 years of age to learn a trade; Thomas Barber doth engage to take Samuel Barber's portion and after two years from the present to allow 6% simple interest per annum. John Barber took Josias' portion upon the same terms. Page 188 - 6 Jun 1662, Dist. to John and Sarah jointly. House and Home lot as their Father willed - 126-13-04. He died on Sept. 11th, and his wife Joan on Sept. 10th, 1662. Children: John, bp. 24 Jul 1642; Thomas, b. 14 Jul 1644; Sarah, bp. 19 Jul 1646; Samuel, bp. 1 Oct 1648; Mary, bp. 12 Oct 1651; Josiah, b. 15 Feb 1653. In the Hartford Probate records it will be observed that the name of the fifth child of Thomas and Joan Barber is given as Mercy instead of Mary, as shown above. Also some records seem to indicate that she married a Hale, but the Gillett family records furnish conclusive evidence of her marriage to John Gillett. It is possible that in the records showing the name of Hale, her marriage was confused with that of her sister Sarah's to Timothy Hall, as a confusion of the names Hale and Hall is quite common."
Pp. 29-30: "Mary Barber, bp. Oct. 12, 1651. In the 'Hartford Probate Records' the name is given as Mercy. She m. July 8, 1669, John Gillett, son of Jonathan Gillett, the Emigrant. He was b. in Windsor, Oct. 5, 1644. Children:

      f. Mercy Gillett, b. Jan.31, 163; (Old Church Records state b. Oct. 30, 1682, Hartford.)
John Gillett, the husband of Mary Barber, was the son of Jonathan Gillett, the Emigrant, who with his brother Nathan came to Dorchester, Mass., with the Rev. Mr. Wareham. An interesting relic in the possession of a descendant of the Gillett family is a bible brought from England by Jonathan Gillett. This bible is of the Geneva edition of 1599, which is known as the 'Breeches Bible' for the reason that the fig leaf garment worn by our first parents is translated 'breeches' instead of 'apron' as in the King James version. In the Gillett family this particular copy is known as the 'Bear Bible' from the fact of its once having been used to prop open a window, and a bear in trying to effect an entrance through the opening, clawed the leaves, making marks which still remain."

      4. Henry R. Stiles, "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut," 1892, v. 2, p. 50: "Barber, Thomas, first of name in New England, came to Windsor 1635, with the Saltonstall party under Mr. Francis Stiles; was then ae. 21 years. The Court at Hartford, 28 Mch., 1637, 'ord. that Mr. Francis Stiles shall teach George Chapple, Thomas Cooper and Thomas Barber, his servants, in the trade of a carpenter, according to his promise, for their service of their term, behind 4 days in a week only to saw and slit their own work.' He was made freeman 1645; was a soldier in the Pequot fight (see p. 69, Vol. I.); 1648, dft. in Ct.; Sgt. Barber, for his disorderly conduct striking Lieut. Cook, was adjudged to forfeit his office and pay £5. He rem. to Simsbury, where he contracted to build the first meeting house. He m. Jane ___, 7 Oct 1640 (Old Ch. 5. Ancestry.com's "The Great Migration Begins, Sketches, Preserved Puritan" has the following listing of children for the emigrant Jonathan Gillett. [See his notes for full quotation from which this small portion is taken.]:
      "Children:
      i Jonathan, b. about December 1634 [TAG 15:210]; m. (1) Windsor 23 April 1661 Mary Kelsey [Grant 39], daughter of William Kelsey [TAG 68:209, 210, 215]; m. (2) Windsor 14 December 1676 Miriam Dibble [Grant 39], daughter of Thomas Dibble.

iii Mary, b. say 1638; m. Windsor 15 July 1658 Peter Brown [Grant 33-34; TAG 33:215]. (Because of the tight chronology between the date of marriage of the parents and the known birthdate of the fourth Child, Coddington suggests that Cornelius and Mary may have been twins [TAG 15:211].)
      iv Anna, b. Windsor 29 December 1639 [Grant 39]; m. Windsor 29 October 1663 Samuel Filley [Grant 37].
      v Joseph, bp. Windsor 25 July 1641 [Grant 39]; m. Windsor 24 November 1664 Elizabeth Hawkes [WiVR].

      7. 20 Mar 2008 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bart/Gillet.htm:
"John Gillett born 5 Oct. 1644 in Windsor, married Mercy/Mary Barber 8 July 1669 in Windsor, died shortly before 5 Dec. 1682 in Simsbury (Windsor?). Mercy was baptized 12 Oct. 1651 in Windsor, died 29 Mar. (31 Dec.?) 1725 in Suffield, CT. She was a daughter of Thomas & Jane (Joan?) Barber. She married (2) Capt. George Norton 14 (20?) June 1683 in Windsor. John inherited from his father 6 acres of land without the west bounds of Windsor. The inventory of the estate of John Gillett of Windsor was taken 5 Dec. 1682 by John Loomis, Sen. It was valued at £140-14-06. Legatees were widow Mercy Gillett, John age 9, Thomas age 6, Samuel age 5, Benjamin age 2 and Mercy born 30 Jan. last. Widow Mercy Gillett was appointed administratrix with Jonathan Gillett, Peter Browne, John Barber and Samuel Barber to be overseers. [Manwaring, Charles W., "A Digest of Early CT Probate Records, 1677-1687," 121.]
John and Mercy had 7 children all born in Windsor, one of whom, Samuel Gillett, was born 16 Feb. 1677/8, married Rebecca Bancroft 22 Jan. 1701/2 in Suffield, CT, died in 1739 in Granville, MA, buried in Suffield. Rebecca was born 23 Feb. 1680 in Springfield, MA. She was a daughter of Thomas & Margaret (Wright) Bancroft of the Springfield, MA, region with residence at the "lower wharf" now Enfield, CT. Samuel & Rebecca Gillett's eldest son John Gillett born 16 Jan. 1704/5 in Suffield, Hampshire Co., MA (now CT), but now of Nowarck in Providence of East Jarsey in America, Dish Turner, conveyed to Nathll Copley of Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn., Shipwrite, land in Suffield & Bedford, Hampshire Co. that came to me from my father Samuel Gillet formerly of Suffield but late of Bedford (now Granville) deceased (Springfield, MA, Deed Book H:229). [NEH&GR, 1947-1948), 101:46 & 285-286 & 102:237.] So here we have a second cousin of my Elijah Gillet also living in Newark, NJ in 1734/5! Note that their early home towns of Suffield and Enfield are only about 5 miles apart and that the ages of John and Elijah are only about 1½ years different.
Another son of John & Mercy was Thomas Gillet, the great-great-grandfather of William Hooker Gillette, who had Gillette Castle built on the Connecticut River near Hadlyme 1914-1919. "Thomas1 Barber, born perhaps in Bedfordshire, England, in 1614, died in Windsor, Connecticut, 11 Sept. 1662.
On 7 Oct. 1640 he married Jane or Joan, whose last name is not known. It has been said that she was a daughter of one of the first Dutch settlers of the Connecticut River Valley, and was the first white woman to land in Connecticut. She died 10 Sept. 1662, the day before her husband...
In 1641 he was granted about 600 acres in an area known to the Indians as Massaco. In the town meeting at Northampton, Mass., 24 June 1661, it was voted to ask him to move there, but apparently he chose not to do so. When he died at Windsor a little over a year later he left an estate valued at £132.14s. The probate records showed that his daughter Mercy (Mary) was placed with Lt. Walter Fyler and his wife, and Josias (Josiah) was placed with Deacon John Moore.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Manuscript from the Windsor CT. Historical Society Library of Jay Mack Holbrook entitled "Conn. Colonists - Windsor 1635-1703" has the following listings for Gillets. I am not sure what the references refer to, but they appear to be a compilation of mentioned names in original sources. I have rearranged the entries to be chronological rather than alphabetical as presented by the book compiler.
Gillet, John; marriage to Marcy Barber, 8 Jul 1669; CHS930:40.
Gillet, John; marriage to Marcy Barber, 8 Jul 1669; WEL898:12.
      Gillett, John 644; household size 2, 7 Mar 1670; WYL924:194; spelling Gyllet.
Gillet, Marcy; marriage to George Norton of Suffield, 14 Jun 1683; WIN638:59 [widow of John Gillet].
Gillet, Mercy; marriage to George Norton of Southfield, 14 Jun 1683; WEL898:52 [widow of John Gillet].

      2. Marriage to ___ Hale:
      A. Some undocumented family histories show that Mary may have been married to a ___ Hale as a third marriage after Norton; however the following quote clearly shows she died with the surname Norton. The following concerns her son Thomas.
From the Gillett family file of the Windsor Historical Society, an article entitled: "The Brothers Jonathan and Nathan Gillett and Some of Their Descendants," comp. by Alice Lucinda Priest, B.L., of Brookline, Mass., pp. 61-62:
"Thomas Gillett (son of John, grandson of Jonathan), of Windsor, Conn., was born 18 July 1676 and baptized the 23rd... There is no known record of a third marriage, though one seems probable. The following 1726 probate record proves that Thomas was then alive, and might suggest a third marriage about 1716.
Northampton, Mass., Probate Records: Book 4, p. 154. Receipt of Thomas Gillet of Windsor, dated 13 April 1726. 'I Thomas Gillet of Windsor have Rec'd of my Hon'd Mother Mercy Norton late of Suffield Dec'd in her life time ye following particulars as part of my portion of share of her estate viz Thre Pounds ten shillings in Money By ye hands of John Gillet in ye year 1724 And also keeping of my Child, providing it with all necessres from ye age of three months until it was seven years old - 6 yr. 9 mo. @ 2s, 6 p per week - as part of his double portion of his mother est. this 13 Apr. 1726.'
      B. FHL book 929.273 B233w, "Also some records seem to indicate that she married a Hale, but the Gillett family records furnish conclusive evidence of her marriage to John Gillett. It is possible that in the records showing the name of Hale, her marriage was confused with that of her sister Sarah's to Timothy Hall, as a confusion of the names Hale and Hall is quite common."
      C. Henry R. Stiles, "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut," 1892, v. 2, does not have any genealogies for "Hale".
      D. The daughter of Benjamin Gillett (a son of John Gillett and Mary Barber), Mercy, b. 16 Dec 1710; m. in Suffield, 7 Sept 1736, Joseph Hale.
