    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Archival Research Paper about Herzenberg Family prepared for Kerry Petersen 28 Feb 2011 and is report no. Nr. 3-P-272, 2816, 1927 N, by Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs (Latvian National Archives), Slokas iela 16, Riga, LV-1007. Complete transcript is in the notes of Edouard/Elias Ocipovitch Herzenberg. One of the attachments has Levin, who is evidently Leopold considering the order recorded:
Image of revision list of Jewish families belonging to Pilten as of Aug. 15, 1851, showing oklad (tax) numbers: #362 Jossel Lemchen Herzenberg, his sons: #363 Ruben, #364 Laser, #365 Jacob, #366 Levin, and #367 Elias. Researcher includes interpretation comment: "They were transferred from the membership of petty bourgeois oklad of Pilten to the 3rd guild merchant of Pilten in 1851."
I received the following later by email from the Archive's lead researcher in reponse to interpretation of the 1851 register page copy that was included with the report:
"Jossel, son of Lemchen Herzenberg (oklad Nr. 362 in the register for 1851) (in our report Nr. 1.3.4.) His children:
-Ruben (oklad Nr. 363 in the register for 1851) (in our report Nr. 1.3.4.1.),
-Laser (oklad Nr. 364) (in our report Nr. 1.3.4.2.),
-Jacob (oklad Nr. 365) (in our report Nr. 1.3.4.3.),
-Levin (oklad Nr. 366) (he was not mentioned in our report, he was not registered in the recruits' enlistment registers for 1842, 1848), obviously Levin was born in time period 1831-1837,
-Elias (oklad Nr. 367) (in our report Nr. 1.3.4.4.).
Since March 9 of 1851 the family of Jossel, son of Lemchen Herzenberg and the family of a widow Schore Herzenberg [wife of Chone Joseph whose family is also on the same page] were registered as merchants of 3rd guild in Pilten."

      2. Website of Peter Bruce Herzenberg of London, England (since relocated to South Africa). Website is no longer functioning as of 7 Aug 2007. Copies of much of his data from the website in my possession. His source HL is Leonardo Herzenberg. In regards to this individual:
HL103/012 shows Leopold last residing at Moscow, Russia.

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. 28 Jul 2007 Http://www.herzenberg.net/leo/htmlrh/Content.html copyrighted by Leo Herzenberg:
"An meinen Sohn (To my son) Leonhard Herzenberg von (from) Robert Herzenberg. Memoirs written during the 1940's." Translated during the 1990's by Leonardo (Leonhard) Herzenberg. The entire memoir is quite lengthy and included in its entirety in my notes with Joseph Herzenberg, the original known ancestor, in this database. The following is only the portion dealing with this part of the family:
      "Great Uncles on Mother's Side...
Great Uncles LEOPOld and Edward I did not know. They lived in Moscow, were very wealthy businessmen, and did not come back to the old homeland any more. My father knew them very well, since once in a while he went to Moscow on business. Their family is shown on the bottom of (5). I never got to Moscow. First it was far, second such a trip was expensive, and third, as a Jew one could go to the main places of Czarist Russia only with great difficulty. More of that later. [66]"

      BIRTH:
      1. Where dates aren't documented above, they are very rough estimates only.
