      6. In the history of the opening of the Japan Mission by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is mention of a missionary named John W. Stoker. (See article published about Heber J. Grant in "BYU Studies," v. 43, No. 1, 2004, pp. 244, 250, and 261.) Elder Stoker was one of the new missionaries who accompanied Apostle Heber J. Grant back to Japan around Aug. 1902. Later in the Mission there was a miraculous healing of Stoker's sprained ankle, which healing he records in his diary 11 Mar 1903. I went to the LDS Archives in Salt Lake City where thay have the "John W. Stoker, Diary." From this, I learned that the Japanese missionary is John William Stoker (1883-1973) and definitely not our John Willard Stoker. In fact, there is no relation to our family since he was born in Doncaster, York, England to John William Stoker and Clara Swaby.

Cordova, charged with befouling the water of Beaver Creek, by maintaining a sheep camp thereon The case was instituted before the Marysvale Justice and on change of venue was transferred to Justice Stoker of Junction. Cordova was herding for Magleby brothers, of Monroe, who employed Judge Stewart, of Richfield, to defendant the herder. The Utah Wool-growers Association also added another attorney for the defense and the case was stubbornly contested. The County employed Gilbert R. Beebe to assist County Attorney Sprague who fought the case for the people to a successful finish. Justice Stoker is to be congratulated on his righteous decision in fining defendant $50, and costs, or about $75. / The case is given here in detail because of its having been a bare-faced outrage on the farmers at the mouth of Beaver Creek, and the further fact that it is so rare that justice is meete4d out to the class that, for more than a score of years, has outraged decency and every principle of justice by insolently defying the settlers on the mountain streams to help themselves. The tide has at last turned against those who have befouled the streams and thereby caused untold sickness and death. The people are awakening to the fearful havoc wrought by unrestricted sheep-razing, and the flock-masters will do well to ponder on the "hand-writing on the wall." / J.F. 2. From a typescript of an unknown source but most likely of the archives of the daughters of the Utah Pioneers (copy in my files) with pages hand-numbered 49-51. See his notes for full quotation; however this part tells about his children with Polly: "...Michael and Polly Hughes had grown into true love for each other. They were married at Springville, Utah, December 1, 1854. They lived in Springville about ten years. During this time three children were born to them: John Willard, Michael Charles, and David William. In 1860, two of Michael's sisters and their husbands were called by Brigham Young to go down and help settle Iron County. Michael who was the youngest of his Mother's family liked to live near his sisters; so he took his wife, Polly, and their three sons and his mother, Barbara Graybill Stoker, who was getting quite old, and moved to Iron County. Settling first at Johnson's Fort, a new settlement north of what is now Cedar City. While living here their first daughter, Emma, was born. She had convulsions and died as a small baby and was buried at Johnson's Fort. They lived at Johnson's Fort about a year and then moved to a nearby settlement called Summit, between Parowan and Cedar City. Here a second daughter, Elmina, was born, September 6, 1865; and Franklin, September, 1867. Franklin died as a small baby and was buried at Johnson's Fort... A happy event came into their lives in June, 1869, a realization of a long hoped for dream. Michael and his wife Polly traveled from Summit, Iron County, to Salt Lake City in a wagon and went to the old Endowment House, and did their temple work. They were sealed to each other for time and eternity. They also did some temple work for some of their people. About 1873, Michael moved his family to Monroe in Sevier County. The family enjoyed living in Monroe. After a few years they moved back to Summit to be near their friends and relatives... Written by Golda Elder Mangum, a granddaughter. Submitted by Hazel Stoker."

      1. Two variances on birth: obituary which says 12 Sep 1856 in Springville versus 9 Sep 1855 in Springville per Ardis Parshall's notes cited above. 1880 census taken summer of 1880 notes his age as 24 which would indicate 1855 and obituary of July 1935 notes age 79 which would again indicate 1855. See other comments below for the 1856 date.
