    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Many Mormon pedigrees list this individual as John Winn with absolutely no information. I believe their pedigrees to by recopying of the same bad information over and over. From the research below, it is apparent to me that this individual is actually John Ewing, with a middle initial of E. or L. subject to the record seen. Actual middle name is Ellis per land records.

      2. Censuses:
      1830 US: Lawrence Co., Alabama, p. 7 of 112:
      John Ewing, males: 1(0-5), 2 (5-10), 1(30-40); females: 1(5-10), 2(10-15), 1(20-30).

1840 US: Itawamba County, Mississippi, p. 19 of 51, this would be John's father John Ewing. Note that census taker is Joshua Toomer for whom Samuel Adair's son Joshua Tumer Adair may have been named:
      John Ewing, males: 2 (under 5), 1(5-10), 1(10-15), 2(15-20), 1(50-60); females: 1(40-50)
      Next door neighbor:
      John Mangum, males: 1(15-20), 1(70-80); females: 1(10-15), 1(15-20), 1(50-60).

1841 State: Itawamba County, Mississippi, per Ancestry.com lists John Ewing as a head of household. This is presumably John's father.

      1850 US: District 7, Itawamba, Mississippi, 5 Nov 1850, family 581:
      John L. Ewing, 29, farmer, $300, AL.
      Laney Ewing, 25, AL.
      Harry Ewing, 22, farmer, AL.
Next door neighbor is probably parents of John:
John M. Ewing, 55, farmer, VA.
      Sarah Ewing, 50, TN.
      Henry Ewing, 15, farmer, AL.
      Moses Ewing, 11, MS.
      Gilbert Ewing, 9, MS.
Also in same district, family 488, is William Ewing, wife Martha, and child John. William is 25 born in Alabama.

1860 US: Fulton Post Office, District 7, Itawamba, Mississippi, listed twice:
      P. 206, 15 Aug 1860, family 1356:
      John L. Ewing, 40, farmer, $600, $800, MS.
      Laney Ewing, 36, MS.
      Mary J. Miller, 30, MS.
      George Corothers, 12, MS.
      P. 235, 21 Aug. 1850, family 1569, neighbors are different:
      John E. Ewing, 38, farmer, $1000, $1000, AL.
      Laney Ewing, 36, AL.
      Mary J. Miller, 21, AL.
George M. Corothers, 12, farm labor, MS.
Presumably father is on p. 236, family 1573:
      John M. Ewing, 67, farmer, $150, $260, VA.
      Mary A. Ewing, 54, TN.
Gilbert Ewing, 19, farm laborer, MS.
      Doctor Simpson Ewing, 12, MS.
Next door to John M. are presumably some of his sons including William Ewing with many Children, and Moses Ewing with a young family.

      1880 US: E.D. 81, Johnson County, Texas, 9 Jun 1880, p. 18b, household 149:
John E. Ewing, 59, farmer, AL VA TN.
Lany, 55, wife, AL SC SC.

      1900 US: Precinct 1, Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, 2 Jun 1900, p. 33a, household 44:
William Ewing, Jan 1822, 78, md. 17 years, Al VA TN, farmer.
Allice Ewing, Apr 1860, wife, 40, md. 17 years, 3 total children all alive, AR AL AL.
Janie, dau., Nov 1884, 15, TX AL AR.
James W., son, Jun 1886, 13, TX AL AR.
Linnie, dau., Aug 1889, 10, TX AL AR.
[Note the census taker got the John's name wrong. John's brother William had just died in Cleburn the previous year in 1899. We know it is John since he was married to Alice and that there was a large age difference with him being born Jan 1822 which also confirms with our records. Unsure why the census taker got the first name confused.

      3. The following is from an email 28 Oct 2005 from Nita Reed [nanny6@msn.com] who is a descendant of John's brother William. [Note she is incorrect, in my opinion, about Laney's other first names and her birth place in Frankfort Co., AL. There is no such county in Alabama.]:
"John Ellis Ewing (John Mose4, John3, Henry2, James1) was born January 10, 1822 in Lawrence Co. Alabama, and died April 02, 1905 in Cleburne, Johnson County Texas. He married (1) Nancy Sary Adair July 13, 1843 in Itawamba County Mississippi. She was born July 02, 1824 in Frankfort Co. Alabama, and died June 29, 1881 in Cleburne, Texas Johnson County. He married (2) Alice Bennett December 20, 1883 in Cleburne, Johnson County Texas. She was born April 26, 1860 in Alabama, and died February 05, 1941 in Cleburne, Texas. Notes for John Ellis Ewing: He was in the Civil War in Company E. Ham's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry. Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery.
Notes for Nancy Sary Adair: She was also called Laney. Her tombstone says she was born in Frankfort, Alabama. Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery
Notes for Alice Bennett: In the 1900 Johnson County Census, Alice is 40 years old, making her 38 years younger that John Ell. The census states that they had been married for 17 years. I believe she and her family are living near William M. Ewing in the 1880 census. Her name was Laura A. Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery
Children of John Ewing and Alice Bennett are:
      i. Janie Ewing, born November 1884 in Johnson Co. TX. She married Jess Smith. Children of Janie Ewing and Jess Smith are: Dick Smith, Francine Smith, Joe Della Smith, Lou Ella Smith, and Fred Smith.
ii. Bill Ewing, born June 05, 1886 in Johnson County, Texas; died June 28, 1972 in Johnson Co. TX. He married Della Smith; born August 31, 1888 in Johnson Co. TX; died February 23, 1977 in Johnson Co. TX. Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. More about Della Smith: Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery.
iii. Tennie Lou Ewing, born August 1892 in Johnson Co. TX; died December 19, 1971 in Johnson Co. TX. She married James Corbit Hopkins; born August 27, 1892 in Johnson Co. TX; died June 20, 1981. Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. More About James Corbit Hopkins: Burial: Cleburne Memorial Cemetery."

      4. Per 29 Oct 2005 Worldconnect database "rwm" of Robert Wayne McGahuey about John E. Ewing:

Ewing, 10 Jan 1822, Lawrence Co., Ala; md: 13 July 1843, Nancy Adair; he died 2 Apr 1905, Johnson Co., Tex." Also vol. 13, page 3: "John E. Ewing to Texas Fall of 1869; wife's name: Laney."

      6. Website http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm:
      "John E. Ewing; Regiment Name: Ham's Reg't. Mississippi Cav.; Side Confederate; Company E Soldier's Rank-In Private; Soldier's Rank-Out Private. Film Number M232 roll 12.
"Confederate Mississippi Troops; Ham's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry:
Ham's Cavalry Regiment was organized in May, 1864, by transferring the 16th Mississippi State Cavalry along with a number of state companies to regular service. Many of the men were from Southeastern Mississippi. It served under Generals Gholson and F.C. Armstrong in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The regiment was active in various conflicts in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama, but many were captured at Selma. Very few were included in the surrender on May 4, 1865. The field officers were Colonel T.W. Ham, Lieutenant Colonel William P. Curlee, and Major George W. Bynum."

      7. Photos on file of John Ewing and his second wife Alice, John's Confederate Civil War Record, Laney's tombstone, and property record of John's in Itawamba County, MS. Photos received from Nita Reed.
      A. "Certificate No. 23619, The United States of America, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting: Whereas John Ellis Ewing of Itawamba County, Mississippi has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Pontotoc whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said John Ellis Ewing according to the provisions of two several Treaties with the Chickasaw Indians, dated October 20th, 1832, and May 24th, 1834, the act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled "An Act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands, " and the several acts of Congress supplemental thereto, for the South East quarter of Section Twenty-one, in Township Eight, of Range Nine East, in the District of lands subject to sale at Pontotoc, Mississippi, containing 160 acres and 48 hundredths of an acre... Signed at the City of Washington, the 20th of August 1856."
      B. Civil War record shows John E. Ewing as a private in Co. E. Ham's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate per Company Muster Rolls for May 5 to June 30, 186?, Jan 18 to Apr 30, 186? [last digits unclear], and Sept 18, 1863 to Jan 20, 1864. Notes that he was absent without leave. He enlisted May 11, 1863 at Grenada by Capt. McNiell for 12 mos. Remarks include, "Not paid. Deserted. Transferred by order Gen'l. Gholson to Ashcrots Bat. April 3, 1864.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Ancestry.com shows under "Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900," a marriage listing between Nancy Adair and John E. Ewing, 13 Jul 1843, Itawamba Co., MS. "Itawamba County, Mississippi Marriage Book 1," entry 250, transcription per the website for the Itawamba County, Mississippi Historical Society online archives shows: "John E. Ewing and Sary Adair, 13 Jul 1843, by Saml. Adair." I have not seen the actual book, but it appears the penmanship of Laney Adair's first name is hard to read leading to interpretation to Nancy or Sary - both of which could probably be read as Laney if the transcriber had known her true name. It would be worthwhile to actually see the actual image. 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses confirm Laney as the proper forename. Samuel Adair would be the clergy brother of Laney.

      "Ewing, Laney July 02, 1824 - May 22, 1873; B 35 L 9; Wife of J. E. Ewing; Born in Tuscalousa Co., Alabama."
      John Ewing's brother and sister-in-law:
      "Ewing, William July 04, 1825 - May 26, 1899; B 35 L 14."
      "Ewing, Martha A., Dec. 09, 1829 - July 10, 1873; B 35 L 9; Wife of William Ewing."

      2. http://users.htcomp.net/JCGS/INDEX1903.htm "R.H. Deering and Son Funeral Home Records INDEX 1903-1906," shows Ewing, John E. on page 435. The website notes: The original records may be viewed at the Cleburne Public Library. I contacted the library and they sent me a copy which includes the following synopsis:
"Record and Bill of Items for the funeral of John E. Ewing. Date of death, April 2nd, 7:30 a.m., 1905, color white, 83 years, farmer, died of old age, place of burial is Cleburne, date of interment is April 3rd, 1905, casket size is 6/3 ($60.00). Goods ordered by J.W. Ewing. Cost of Herse was $15 and Lining of Grave was $5."

      OBITUARY:
      1. Copy on file with me sent by the Cleburne Public Library of the newspaper "The Daily Enterprise, Cleburne, Texas," Monday April 3, 1905. Uncle Johnnie Ewing Passes Away. The many friends of Mr. J.E. (Uncle Johnnie) Ewing will grieve to learn of his death which occurred at his home some three miles east of the city. Uncle Johnnie was 84 years of age and had been in feeble health for some time, yet was not thought dangerously ill and his death came as a considerable shock to the family and friends.
He leaves to mourn for him a wife and three children, all grown, Misses Janie and Tiny Lou and Mr. Willie Ewing, besides a large family connection, among whom are Messers Jim, Rob, Mark, Alexander, Frank Ewing, Mrs. W.D. Howell and Mrs. William Reeves. The funeral took place this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock; the Masonic fraternity of which he was a member, taking a prominent part in the obsequies. He was an old pioneer and had many friends who will deeply miss him."

      ACTION:
      1. Look for the actual image of marriage record to confirm the spelling of Laney's first name that has been so often misread as Nancy or Sary. "Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900," a marriage listing between Nancy Adair and John E. Ewing, 13 Jul 1843, Itawamba Co., MS. "Itawamba County, Mississippi Marriage Book 1," entry 250, transcription per the website for the Itawamba County, Mississippi Historical Society online archives shows: "John E. Ewing and Sary Adair, 13 Jul 1843, by Saml. Adair."
