    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Name also appears as Elmira Olive Merchant.

      2. Father is William Henry Merchant. Mother is ____ Sackett per Lockwood Genealogies or Rebecca Hall per Kimball Everingham's database as noted below under DEATH. Kim states he has no primary source proving her mother. Per Liz Garrety 11 Jan 2002 email : "I am sure that William had 3 wives & I believe Rebecca Hall is Olive Elmira's mother. I am guessing that Asaph Hall & his wife Olive are her parents, but can't prove that."

      3. Using the circa 1870 letter that George wrote Julia, it appears Elmira was very sick for 18 years prior to her death in 1866.

      BIRTH:
      1. The Hales Newsletter, Autumn 1997, Vol. 3 No. 3, p.39 which quotes "Genealogy of the Lockwood Families" compiled by Holden and Dunbar (FHL film 0000551) which uses the date of 8 Aug 1826. Death register quoted below seems to indicate 4 Mar 1827. Both indicate New York.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. The Hales Newsletter, Autumn 1997, Vol. 3 No. 3, p.40 which quotes "Genealogy of the Lockwood Families" compiled by Holden and Dunbar (FHL film 0000551) quotes marriage as May 1844 at Cazenovia to Olive Elmira Merchant, whereas Ordinance Index has two entries: this one and another noted as 23 May 1844 at Earlville, Madison, New York to a Elmina O. or Elmira Merchant.

      2. Per Liz Garrety 11 Jan 2002 email : "Deaths, Births, Marriages from Newspapers published in Hamilton, Madison County, NY 1818-1886 has marriage of George and Elmira, abstracted from the Democratic Reflector & Abstracts from Madison Co. Newpapers has it abstracted from the Madison Co. Eagle."

      DEATH:
      1. Ancestry.com has St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908 and there is Elmina, death date 21 Jul 1866, lived at 464 24th St. & buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

      2. Aug 1866 in St. Louis, Missouri per Worldconnect, database: kgeveringham. Provides source of Obituary which appeared 1 Sep 1866 in the Oneida Dispatch newspaper, pg. 3, col. 2, of Oneida, Madison County, New York. Kimball G. Everingham email: kgeveringham@bigfoot.com He also states: "My source for Elmira's death is actually "Madison County Newspaper Index 1854-1931," an unpublished manuscript at the Madison County Historical Society, Main Street, Oneida, Madison County, New York. This source gives the information you found on Worldconnect, but doesn't give a transcription or copy of the original obituary which I haven't seen."

      3. Per email 14 Apr 2002 from Liz Garrety : I received the death record for Elmina Olive, listed in Deaths for the week ending July 27th in the Register of Deaths City of St Louis:
      "Date: July 21 1866
      Name of Deceased: Elmina Lockwood
      Place of Nativity: New York
Locality where death occurred : (Copy hard to read) may be 46? 3rd St.
Name of disease: Phthesis Pulmonalis [TB?]
      White male: checked!
      Age: Years: 39; Months: 4; Days: 17 [4 Mar 1827].
      Cemetery Bellefontaine"

      BURIAL:
      1. Per 18 Feb 2002 email from HRHConnie@aol.com: "I went to Bellefontaine Cemetery today. Here's what I found: Elmira was interred July 22, 1866 in Block 187, Public Lot 22, Grave 50."

      SOURCES_MISC:
      1. The book: "Genealogy of the Lockwood Family 1630-1888 - Descendants of Robert Lockwood, Colonial and Revolutionary History of the Lockwood Family in America from A.D. 1630," compiled by Frederic A. Holden and E. Dunbar Lockwood, printed privately by the family, 1889, Philadelphia.

      ACTION:
      1. On 12 Feb 2002, I have emailed the public library in Oneida, NY for a transcription of Elmira's obit. from the Oneida Dispatch. We'll see what we get.
