    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Since Adalade's mother died as supposed in 1853 in San Bernardino, CA, this younger Winner child may have been given out for upbringing and/or adoption to other families in the area which was quite common in that day and age. The US: Elliott Township, dwelling #532, San Joaquin County, California for 1860 [10 Jul 1860] lists Adelaide Winner, age 11, born in California, living with Jacob [age 42, farmer, of Ind., with $4000 real estate and $1000 personal estate] and Terry Morsse [age 43 of Ohio]. They have 5 sons ages 9 through 20 born in Ind., Ohio, and and 3 in Ill. respectively. There are also 5 male farm laborers age 21 through 25 from Ind, Ill., Missouri, and 2 in Kentucky apparently all unrelated also at the same address. The odd Winner girl looks out of place unless adopted or a foster child. She should have been about 13 if born in latter part of 1846 and not 11. The 1881 Canadian Census shows Deborah Armstrong at age 33 which would put birth at about 1848 and therefore age 11. No other Winners in township. This Morsse family does show up in the LDS Ancestral File as Jacob Henry Morss [AFN#34H7-HG] and Terrah Ellen Morris [AFN#34H7-JM] with their five sons, their wives, and a long downline following the eldest son. [This information had been submitted by Mercie Cowan Swenson, 1400 W. Iron Horse Dr., Post Falls, ID 83854.] Also, as a point of interest, there was a Justus Morse sawmill in operation in San Bernardino in 1850's which Winners may have known due to Mary Ann Winner Frederick's involvement with mills at the same time; could this Mors be a relation; Ancestral File reports this Justus Morse [AFN#1ZSN-54] being born in Massachusetts without an apparent connection. Also a Thomas Morris took over leadership of San Francisco LDS Branch in 1853 when George Winner and family moved to San Bernardino.

      2. Census reports:
1850 US Census: no record; San Francisco's portion of US Census was lost due to earthquake or fire.

1852 US: California Statehood Census, Los Angeles County (pre-San Bernardino), p. 143; note this census began June 1852 in this county with county wide results of 7831 total residents of which 2494 were white males and 1597 were white females. It's preface to the state compilation says that only about 5 in every 6 were counted due to the frontier and mobile nature of the population. Note that the second location is last residence.
      George K. Winneo, 46, N.J., Utah, Farmer
      Hanna, 46, N.J., Utah
      Mary Ann, 23, N.J., Utah
      Emojine, 15, N.J., Utah
      Moroni, 10, N.J., Utah
      Israel, 8, N.J., Utah
      Adalade, 7, Cal., Cal.
This census is important and invites several interesting comments. Some of the info seems close but suspect and may have been given by a neighbor; they had not lived in Utah, the WINNEO misspelling of WINNER, and the ages vary: Adalade's age would mean she was born in 1845 before arriving in CA in 1846 which is incorrect and Moroni's age is at variance to the 1870 census, etc.

1860 US census: See research note #1 above.

1870 US census for Pescadero Post Office, Sixth township, San Mateo County, California, p. 409C, household no. 12, family no. 11, enumerated 18 Aug 1870 [I am unsure why Deborah Armstrong not listed but this is definitely the right family; she nor George Winner are listed in Pescadero]:
Wm. D. Armstrong, 44, farmer, $8,000 real estate, b. England, both parents of foreign birth, US citizen.
George S., 5, at home, Cal., father of foreign birth, mother not.
Frances, 4, at home, Cal., father of foreign birth, mother not.
Hannah E., 2, at home, Cal., father of foreign birth, mother not.
Mary Fuller, 44, housekeeper, NY?, parents both of foreign birth.
James Reid, 27, farm laborer, England, parents of foreign birth, US citizen.

      4. Canadian Censuses:
1881: South New Westminister, British Columbia, Canada [New Westminister is a general area including Fort Langley]:
William Armstrong, M, married, 55, origin English, born USA.
Deborah Armstong, F, married, 33, origin English, born USA.
Lizzie Armstrong, F, 13, origin English, born USA.
Annie Armstrong, F, 10, origin English, born USA.
William Armstrong, M, 9, origin English, born USA.
Charles Armstrong, M, 7, origin English, born USA.
1891: New Westminister District, British Columbia, Canada:
William Armstrong, 64, married, b. Eng., father b. Eng.
Deborah, 42, married, wife, b. US, father b. US.
William, 19, single, b. US, father b. Eng.
Charles, 17, single, b. US, father b. Eng.
Albert, 6, single, b. Brit. Columbia, father b. Eng.

      3. William F. Armstrong and his wife "D.A. Winner": prior to 2002, we always had a problem knowing which Winner daughter this was. The Ship Brooklyn passenger manifest sent to Lu Markham Jones of the Ship Brooklyn Association from the Coombs family historian was taken down by Captain Richardson at the gangplank when they disembarked in Honolulu. It said George K. Winner, wife, and six children and it notes the death of one Winner child in transit from New York to Honolulu. Unfortunately the names of the children were not recorded. This could mean two things: 7 children total with 6 living and 1 dead or 6 total with 5 living and 1 dead. The problem is our family group sheet prepared by Enid Willardson many years ago erroneously identifies 8 children born before the Brooklyn departed NYC: Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Louisa, EmmaGene (or Emmajean), Dembra, Moroni, Israel J., and Sarah. Sarah died on board. Of the remaining 7, prior to 2002 we had independent other sources that confirm each child except Louisa and Dembra. Enid was a good researcher but I have found errors in her work so we cannot assume that her list of 8 children is necessarily correct [she is now deceased but last year I found her research files in both Missouri and San Diego and after personal inspection, I found nothing concrete to support her list]. The Brooklyn Association has relied traditionally on the Brooklyn list developed by the daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) which shows 7 children with EmmaGene combined with Dembra to make one person whom they erroneously called Dembra Emmajean. With the discovery of Deborah Adalade through Lorraine Hughes, this of course solves the list problem to make 7 children assuming Louisa did in fact exist which I currently do believe. Two children were born to George Winner after the Ship Brooklyn's arrival in San Francisco: Adalade sometime about between 1846 and 1848 in San Francisco and Amanda Jane 4 Jun 1853 in San Bernardino. Amanda goes on to Utah and we know her descendancy. The new letter below from Lorraine Hughes [see citation with William Armstrong's notes] is a major find and now lists D.A. Winner as Deborah Adelade. This is most interesting because it lists our Dembra and our Adelade as perhaps the one and same person. It is also interesting to note that I have never yet found the DUP's "Dembra EmmaGene" in any records. I have however found "EmmaGene" in Parley P. Pratt's diary in San Francisco when she was rebaptized in 1851 in San Francisco at about age 14 and then the following year at age 15 with her family in San Bernardino during the 1852 census. With Dembra really being Deborah Adelade, this of course eliminates "Dembra" as the 8th child on the Brooklyn gangplank list thereby also solving that problem.

      4. When I found living descendants of Deborah in Canada, they were surprised at Deborah's LDS affiliation. Appears she took on her husband's Church of England practice. The family there are currently members of the canadian version of the Church of England.

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. According to Charles E. Armstrong's death certificate, William D. Armstrong's family appear to have moved to Canada around 1876 [probable error since George Winner's obituary would put family in California Sep. 1877; application for canadian homestead land per copy on file was 29 Jul 1878].

      2. Lorraine Hughes indicates: "According to family tales, Addie (Adelade) was quite a mean-spirited person. Grandfather William was two months from a medical degree when his father died in 1897, the farm was divided, but some time later Addie took all available cash and went back to the States, leaving Albert Victor who was a minor, with Charlie his brother. According also to family talk, she had become a spiritualist, and died in an avalanche while staying in a mining town for the winter as a cook. That is about all I could find of her in the family tales, as she was gone before any of dad's generation was born, and all they heard was kind of lost to time. Grandfather never finished the Dr. degree, so as I heard it, she was not well thought of."

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Per marriage license copy provided 14 Aug 2001 by the County of San Mateo, Redwood City, CA, handwritten: "Marriage License. State of California, County of San Mateo. I do hereby authorize any Judge, Justice of the Peace, Clergyman or Preacher of the Gospel to celebrate the marriage of William F. Armstrong to D.A. Winner. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and official seal this 21st day of September 1864. Thomas H. Noble, County Clerk. Marriage License. I certify in pursuance of the above license W.F. Armstrong and D.A. Winner were by me married this day the first of October A.D. 1864. Wm. Durham. Justice of the Peace. Pulgas Township [Redwood City]. San Mateo Co., California. A true copy of an orginal recored at request of W.F.Armstrong Oct 12th at 2 P.M. Thomas H. Noble, County Recorder."

      2. Per San Mateo County Times Gazette for issue date of 14 Oct 1864 per microfilm in San Mateo County History Library, Redwood City, CA: "At Redwood City, Oct. 1 [1864], by Wm. Durham, Justice of the Peace, William F. Armstrong to Miss D.A. Winner, both of San Mateo County." No other information given. D.A. is Deborah Adalade. George K. Winner is definitely the father since George's obituary states he died at the home of his son-in-law: William F. Armstrong. For some reason William alternated his middle name between F. or D. or Dale; they definitely are all the one and same individual.

      DEATH:
      1. Per Lorraine Hughes, family tradition is that Addie went south to work in a mining camp in the US as a cook and stayed on one winter assisting in winter caretaker responsibilities. There was an avalanche that killed her sometime probably between 1900 and 1906. Lorraine has been concentrating her search in Montana thus far without success as of 27 Apr 2002.

      PHOTOS:
      1. Lorraine in Canada was able to locate a photo of Deborah Adalade Winner which I have on file. It shows her in Canada. There are nine individuals in the photo and all are not identified. The accompanying writing is Lorraines best guess as to the various identities. Deborah is seated and Lorraine's notes indicate the three behind her are "Loftus, Selina, Elizabeth "A" Scott (written above Elizabeth is Hannah), and the small boy next to Deborah is the father of Carole C."

      SOURCES_MISC:
      1. Living relative found March 2002 in British Columbia: Lorraine Hughes, phone 604-856-5702. She is planning on writing a book on the Armstrong family. She is a member of the Canadian equivalent of the Church of England. She has a cousin, Jannette Koenig, in the FHL that helps with research. She is 65 and divorced. She is a gr-gr-granddaughter of George Winner. Address is 6737 Satchell Road, Mt. Lehman, BC V4X-2E3.

      ACTION:
      1. Lorraine Hughes mentions William Armstrong's will. Try to get a copy of this.

      2. Do a deeper 1870 census looking for Deborah Adalade Armstrong. For some reason she is not with her husband and Children. Check for Elliotts San Joaquin area.
