  • Notes
    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Censuses:
1860 US: Not in Parowan. Searched the entire Parowan census.

1870 US: Parowan, Iron, Utah, p. 293b, household 163, family 159 (6 houses before Ebenezer and Jane Hanks):
Albert Hanks, 25, Indian, b. UT, cannot write.
Ruth, 25, Indian, b. UT, cannot write.
      Albert A., 2, Indian, b. UT.
Mary E., 4/12, Indian, b. UT in Feb.

1880 US: Can't find. Definitely not in Parowan.

      2. Utah State Historical Society Burials Database online has the following entry which could be this individual: Ruth Wimmer (Indian), buried Pinto Cemetery. No dates nor relatives are given. Pinto Cemetery is located in Pinto, Washington County, Utah, and can be found by taking highway 18 N. from St. George to a dirt road between Central and Enterprise and then going east for about 10 miles. Cemetery sits behind farm house. In the same cemetery is a Alonzo Hanks (Indian) with no further information.

      3. Per book "The Ebenezer Hanks Story" by Kerry Bates: "Albert [Hanks] was an adopted Indian boy of Ebenezer and Jane as was Martha Catherine Frederick; they were the only children of Ebenezer's marriage to Jane. He married Ruth Wimmer, an Indian girl adopted by the Wimmer family in Parowan. It is not known if they had any Children."

      4. The following was found which though not totally certain seems to be the right Albert and Ruth associated with Ebenezer and Jane Hanks. It appears that the Ord. Ind. individuals "a and b" are definitely the same Albert and are tied into the Smith family who does his proxy work; they in turn tie him to Parowan and to Ruth Oship by having the sealing done between these two the same day as Albert's endowment. Ruth Oship is tied by her ordinance index death date to the burial index individual "a" which also shows a middle name of Smith tying her probably to the Smiths who did Albert's work; additionally it clearly shows her as an Indian which would make Smith not her birth name. Oship could be an Indian name. She is definitely buried in Parowan which is where the Albert and Ruth associated with Jane Hanks lived. That the work was done in 1910 I think is also significant. Checking all other LDS online sources, Utah burial index, and Rootsweb.com Worldconnect, I find no other reports of the combination Albert, Ruth, Hanks, and Parowan. A last name of Wimmer for Ruth and a possible first name of Henry for Hanks does not give any results. Individual "A.c" may be the same Albert but the submitter did not provide any linkage information; individual B.b below could be another Ruth Hanks possibility but it does not give as compelling linkage as does the first Ruth. [The birth and death dates for Albert appear erroneous when compared to the 1870 census.]
      A. Online Ordinance Index 3 May 2003 shows the following Albert Hanks:
      a. One who died Aug 1878 and was endowed 29 Jun 1910 SLAKE with Joseph H. Smith and John Henry Smith as relatives/proxies. Shows born and died in Utah with no other info. Per FHL film 184105, ref. 2941, p. 82.
      b. One who was born abt. 1851, "of Parowan, Iron, Utah" and died Aug 1878 with endowment 29 Jun 1910 and sealing to Ruth Oship same date in SLAKE. Ruth Oship is shown born 1849 in Parowan, Iron, Utah with death of 13 Apr 1905. Her endowment is 29 Jun 1910 with no other info; sealing per FHL film 184596 ref. 6144.
      c. One who was born 1840 in Utah with baptism 6 Aug 1999 Manti and Endowment "cleared" with no other info.
      B. Utah Burials Online Index 3 May 2003 shows two indian women with the name of Ruth Hanks (Note: Albert or Henry Hanks nor Ruth Wimmer show up in this index):
      a. Ruth Smith Hanks, d. 13 Apr 1905 from pneumonia, buried in Parowan Cemetery 01-01-05 with note that father was Indian.
      b. Ruth Hanks (Indian), buried at Pinto Cemetery with no dates nor relatives are given. Pinto Cemetery is located in Pinto, Washington County, Utah, and can be found by taking highway 18 N. from St. George to a dirt road between Central and Enterprise and then going east for about 10 miles. Cemetery sits behind farm house. In the same cemetery is an Alonzo Hanks (Indian) with no further information nor indication of relation if any.
