    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Extraction of Bicknor Parish Records (FHL film 1851040, it. 6), Bishop's Transcript (FHL film 1751589, it. 1), and Archdeacon's Transcript (FHL film 1736525, it. 3). Walter Straine listed as churchwarden in Bicknor in 1571-1597, 1613-1615, 1619-1620, 1626-1627 -- assuming a minimum age of 21 to be a churchwarden, then his birth would have been abt 1550 or earlier.
Family Group: Walter Straine and Joyce Tilden [Joyce not mentioned in Bicknor, but noted in his will]; 20 Nov 1627, Walter Straine, bur.:
-25 Feb 1591/2, Robert s of Walterius Strayne, bap.
-15 Mar 1593/4, Agnes d of Walterius Strayne, bap.
-23 May 1596, Richard s of Walterius Strayne, bap.; 30 Jul 1597 Richard s of Walter Straine, bur.
-28 May 1598, William s of Walterius Strayne, bap.; 5 May 1660/70, Willm. Straine, bur.; 25 Sep 1667, Anne Straine the wife William Straine, bur.; children:
-14 Jul 1640, Johannes s of Gulielm [Willliam] and Anne Straine, bap. [John in BT.]
-12 Dec 1649, Walter so of William and Anne Straine, bur.
-10 Oct 1600, Elizabeth d of Walter Straine, bap.; 14 Oct 1623, John Doe and Elizabeth Straine, mar.
-[say 1604, James Knight. Note: Walter's will mentions additional sons named James, John, and Thomas for whom there are no baptismal records in Bicknor.]
-[say 1607, John Knight. Note: Walter's will mentions additional sons named James, John, and Thomas for whom there are no baptismal records in Bicknor. We do find William as a father.] 8 Aug 1631, John Straine of Bicknor and Margaret Brenchly of Thurnam, mar.; children:
-22 May 1632, Elizabeth d of John Straine, bap.
-17 Nov 1633, Joyce d of John Straine, bap.
-[say 1610, Thomas Knight. Note: Walter's will mentions additional sons named James, John, and Thomas for whom there are no baptismal records in Bicknor.]
-2 Aug 1614, Richard s of Walter Strayne, bap.; 14 Apr 1618, Richard s of Walter Strayne, bur.
Unplaced individuals. They are surely related because the parish of Bicknor was so small that there were some years with no parish entries:
      A. 27 Sep 1601, Adam s of Adam Straine, bap.
      B. John Strayne the elder. A John Straine "the elder" is listed as churchwarden in 1599-1606. No other reference. Could he be a brother of Walter?
      C. John Strayne the younger.
-6 Dec 1605, Margaret wife of Johannis Strayne, bur.
-23 Jun 1606, "John Strayne the Younger and Rose Wyse were joygned togyther in Matrimonie.' Child:
-19 Jan 1611, John s of Johannis Strayne, bap.
      D. 5 Oct 1659, William Straine and Anne Thatcher, mar. [Could this be the same William who was the son of Walter? This is perhaps a second marriage for him with his first wife being Anne ___ with whom he had two children in 1640 and 1649. The wife's surname Thatcher is not a Bicknor name, which would make one think then that it was the groom's parish. Unfortunately no burial record is found in Bicknor for the earlier Anne.
Comments: The relationship between unplaced groups A, B, and C is currently unknown. John Straine the elder may be a younger brother. John Straine the younger and Adam Straine may be John's sons. On the other hand, there is a possibility that Walter Strain was previously married before Joisa Tylden in 1690. Consider he is listed as the church warden continuously from 1571 to 1597 and then intermittedly until his death in 1627. This would give a estimated birth of about 1550 or earlier whereas Joisa is estimated to have been born about 1571, which would lean towards perhaps an earlier marriage. On the other hand, we have Walter Strain's 1627 will and there is no mention of Adam; there is, however, a mention of John, but he seems to be the one married much later to Margaret Benchley. For now, I think John the elder is a brother of Walter and both Adam and John are his sons.

      2. Mentioned in brother-in-law's will. Will: Strayne, Straine - Walter, Bicknor, 1627, 1627, PRC/17/67/111, PRC/16/189 S/8, 1627:
      Will written 3 Nov 1627

      -daughter Doe
      -wife Joyse as sole executrix
-sons William and James house and property in Bicknor
      -son John property in Bredgar
      -son Thomas house in Bredgar
-overseer William Tylden my brother [probably brother-in-law]
Signature of Walter Strayne [although this is not actually his signature, as I believe these wills are copies made for the Archdeaconry and not original wills]
      Will probated 15 Dec 1627

      3. Hearth Tax of 1664 has these entries which may pertain to the brothers William and Thomas Straine; however, the chances of it being our Thomas is slim since there was another Thomas at Milton contemporaneous to our Thomas:
-William Straine owned a house with 2 chimneys in Stockbury & Bicknor
-Thomas Strayne owned a house with 2 chimneys in Milton, beside Borden
-William Straine owned a house with 1 chimney in Mackland, which appears to be in Rainham (abt 9 miles from Bicknor)
