  RESEARCH_NOTES: 1. Censuses: 1880 US: Not found. May have died before 1880. Not in Utah nor Tennessee under last name of Bass or Berry. 2. Reviewed Rootsweb.com Worldconnect 7 Dec 2002. Database ":1901176" indicates they had one child: Jesse David Berry b. 25 Sep 1843 in Weakly Co., TN and d. 9 Oct 1843; also cited are records of Emily Brown Barnes with the following note: "After the baby's death John and Nancy went to Nauvoo, IL with his people. Nancy's people did not join the church, and were very hostile to it. After the Prophet's death when the Saints were getting ready to come west, Nancy asked John to let her return to Tennessee to see her baby's grave once again, she could make the trip with friends, and return to Nauvoo in few weeks. John consented. Her folks talked her into staying with them, for which she was always sorry. She always loved John, and she never married again." June 19, 1828, Wilson County, TN, d. Dec 7, 1892 Weakley County, TN, daughter of David D. Bass and Harriett Salena Smith. In the 1850 Census of Weakley County, Nancy Jane is listed (as Bass not Berry) with her father, his second wife, and bros and sis. I have never found a divorce record for Nancy Jane and John Williams Berry - I guess back then they just figured that after almost 20 years the 'statute of limitations' had run out. On Sept 11, 1864, in Weakley County, TN Nancy Jane Bass married David Moore Duke (his first wife was Mary Louise Bass 1832-1864, md Dec 21, 1854 Weakley County, TN, buried Obion Chapel Cem, Weakley County, TN - the sister of Nancy Jane - David Moore Duke and Mary Louise Bass had 5 children but only one John Moore Duke b 1862 lived beyond infancy). David Moore Duke and Nancy Jane Bass had three children: Mary Louise (Mollie) Duke b 1865, Matthew David Duke b 1867, and Luther Thomas Duke b 1869 (my husband's grandfather).
