    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Roger Knell in his 1599 will in Shipbourne and Edmund Knell in his 1649 will in Brenchley both are shown with the occupation of "trugger", which is a maker of long shallow baskets. This occupation helps tie Edmund of Brenchley to the person of the same name chr. in Shipbourne.

      2. FHL film 1866581 "Shipbourne, Kent, England Parish Records" has the following related entries for Knells that I extracted from the parish records which begin in 1560. I looked up to 1640 in baptisms, marriages, and burials. I cannot yet connect them together:
      - 19 Jul 1563 Willm Harrys of Wrotham & Agnes Knell daughter of John Knell married.
      - 19 Sep 1563 Thomas Curd and Alice Knell married.
      - 16 Oct 1567 William Beecher and Johane Knell married.

      3. Jack Cade's Rebellion of 1450: A Database of Names of those Receiving Pardons, taken from Calendar of Patent Rolls Henry VI 5 (1909) pp. 338-374 accessed from https://familysearch.org. This spreadsheet of about 3449 persons was created by Merton Historical Society in September 2014, and is accessible at http://www.mertonhistoricalsociety.org.uk/index.php?cat=morden&sec=!rebels
For more detail on this listing and the event see http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Pub/ArchCant/007%20-%201868/007-03.pdf
      Knell:
William Neel the younger, Chateham, Kent
      Simon Nele, Estgrenewiche, Kent, pulter
Pemell Nele his wife, Estgrenewiche, Kent, wife

      4. The following extraction was made from the "Index to the Kent Lay Subsidy Roll of 1334/5," by H.A. Hanley, B.A. and C.W. Chalklin, M.A., B. Litt <http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Pub/KRV/18/7/313.htm> accessed 11 Feb 2016. From this index, the actual entries are found in "The Kent Lay Subsidy Roll of 1334/5," by the same authors <http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Pub/KRV/18/3/058-172.htm> accessed 12 Feb 2016. The second document more fully explains the history of this Lay Subsity. This was a tax assessed on householders; however, it probably only represents about 50% of the householders since the poorer families were not assessed:
[Knell?] Neel, Ellen, 128 (Hundred of Chetham and Gillyngham [Chatham and Gillingham]); Jn., 81 (Hundred of Eastri [Eastri]), 151 (Hundred of Loniberghe [Loningborough]); Rd., 128 (Hundred of Chetham and Gillyngham [Chatham and Gillingham]), 151 (Hundred of Loniberghe [Loningborough]); Robt., 169 (Bailiwick of Kay in Middletone [Key Street in Milton]: Tenth); Rog., 99 (Hundred of Faversham), 102 (Hundred of Calhelle [Calehill]); Walt., 131 (Hundred of Schamele [Shamwell]); Wm., 91 (Hundred of Wyngeham [Wingham]), 113 (Hundred of Hoo).

      MARRIAGE:
      1. FHL film 1866581 "Shipbourne, Kent, England Parish Records": 8 Feb 1578/9: "Roger Knell and Alice Nicolls als. Webb married."

      DEATH:
      1. Copy of registered will in the Rochester Consistory Court of Kent, England; FHL film 188796; Document reference DRb/Pwr/191.148 or DRb/Pw/19. My abstract:
Date of will: 18 Nov 1599
      Roger Knell of Shipbourne, trugger.
      - "Pained by ulcers and lamenes of Lymes"
      - "Alice my wellbeloved wife" named as executrix.
      - 3 acre parcel in Shipbourne (no mention of land elsewhere)
      - Bro.-in-law Andrew Davies
      - Sons Edmond and Thomas under full age of 26
      - Daughter Jane Knell under full age of 20 and unmarried.
      - Good friends: Edward Walsingham Ryhersh (Ryarsh), yeoman; Thomas Balden of Osenhother [Oxonhoarth], fuller.
      - "Aged mother" (not named)
      - Witnesses John Hoadley, Edward Goldsmith, Nicholas Hopper
      Probated 16 Feb 1600/1.

      BURIAL:
      1. FHL film 952764 "Transcriptions in Shipbourne Church and Churchyard" has no entries for Knell, Nichols alias Webb, or Broke. Most inscriptions look to be much more modern than the generation we seek.
