A. pp. 252-253: "Edmund Wells was descended from an English stock. His father, Thomas Wells, was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England, in 1694, and came to America in 1712, and settled in Saybrook, Conn. where he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Merrill, in May, 1720. Edmund Wells, one of the original propietors of the Cambridge patent, was born in Saybrook, 19 Feb 1721. In 1773 he removed with his family from Hebron, Conn., and settled in what is now the town of Cambridge, on the farm now owned and occupied by Thomas Cornell. He is the only one of the patentees who came to live upon the patent. His children were John Howell Wells, lived and died in Connecticut, Edmund Wells, Jr., born in 1746; graduated at Yale College, Sept. 14, 1768; came with the family in 1773. He was a prominent man in the town. He died on the homestead, 26 Sep 1826, aged 80 years. Mary Wells, married Walter Raleigh, and lived and died in Cambridge. Henry Wells, died young. James Wells, was a lieutenant of dragoons in the Continental service. He died at Croton River, Sept. 23, 1701 [date looks wrong - porb. 1781], aged 30 years. Sarah, married Joseph Peters, and lived and died in Cambridge. Austin, lived and died on his farm in White Creek, Dec. 8, 1849.
Captain Daniel Wells was born in Hebron, Conn., in 1754; in April, 1776, enlisted and joined the army then stationed on Long Island under the immediate command of General Washington. He held the rank of orderly-sergeant, and was selected as the bearer of a dispatch from General Washington to General Sullivan, containing sealed orders apprising him of the intended retreat. The duties were discharged with promptness amidst darkness and storm. Sergeant Wells' term of enlistment having expired while in the army was at White Plains, he received his discharge, and returned to Hebron, Conn., where he stood as a minute man. In 1779 he removed with his family to Cambridge and settled on the farm now owned by William Curtis. Here he lived with the companion of his youth for more than half a century, and was blessed with a family of sixteen children. He died May 6, 1840, aged 86 years. He was a man of stong mind. Respected by his fellow-citizens, he had been honored with various posts of office, both civil and miltary, which he filled with fidelity.
Descendants of the Wells family are yet living in this and the adjoining towns."
B. P. 68: "Another important movement in regard to highways was the beginning of turnpikes. the Northern Turnpike Company, the first intended to operate within this county, was incorporated on the first day of April, 1799. It was designed to build a turnpike from Lansingburg, through Cambridge, Salem, and Hebron, to the house of Hezekiah Leaving, in the town of Granville; and among its directors were William Hay, Edward Wells, Jr., David Long, Martin Van Buskirk, John Williams, and Edward Savage. The company immediately went to work, and not only built the road to the designated point but continued it northward, through Hampton, to the State line, connecting with a similar road to Burlington, Vermont. They also built a branch from Salem Northeastward to the State line, and another from Granville to Whitehall."
C. P. 116: "Justices of the Peace. The following are the justices of the peace from the organization of the county of Charlotte (afterwards Washington), and residing within the limits of Washington County, giving, as far as possible, the present name of the town: Appointed 6 Apr 1792: Edmund Wells, Jr., Cambridge; re-appointed 1795, 1798, 1801."

d. 1783: "A pound was directed to be located on the east side of the road by Captain Edmnd Wells' house, Captain Joseph Wells to build it, and Captain Edmund Wells to be poundmaster. Stocks [for confining people?] were also voted. They were to be built by Joseph Wells near the pound.
e. Mar. 14, 1791: Edmund Wells, moderator of special meeting. Phineas Whiteside, appointed part of special committee dealing with Cambridge being annexed by Washington county.
g. 13 Feb 1813: "Austin Wells manumits his slave woman named Hannah."

7. The following author speculates that there was another child born to Edmund Wells and Welthia Ann Goodrich named Clarissa. He does not explain why he believes this especially in light of her birth date of 9 Feb 1786 and the next child Sidney's on 6 Oct 1786.

"Clarissa Wells, guess that she was daughter of Edmund and Welthia Ann (Goodrich) W. of Cambridge, NY, born (9 Feb. 1786), baptized as an adult, 22 July 1804 at 1st United Presbyterian Church, Cambridge, Wash. Co., NY; she married (22 Mar. 1807), possibly at Cambridge, NY, to James Smith, son of ___, born about 1786 in NY state; he was a farmer, of Penfield, Monroe Co., NY by 1850 census, having property: $4000; she had died before about 1831 and he married 2nd to Abigail, daughter of ___, of___ VT, born about 1790, ___, VT, having a daughter, apparently by a previous marriage, whose married name was Abigail (___) Kelley, born about 1819 in NY state, widow, caring for her widowed mother (1880 census: Penfield, Monroe Co., NY); he had died between 1860 and 1880. Children Smith... [Lists 13 children.]"
9. TAG 46:180-183: "The Wells (Welles) Family of Hebron, CT. and Cambridge, N.Y.," by John G. Hunt:
"...Edmund3 Wells, born 1746 at Hebron, Conn., who married there in February 1770, Miss Wealthy Ann Goodrich (named at p. 400 of Hall's "The Bradford Genealogy"). He died at Cambridge, N.Y., in 1826, of which town his father had been an original patentee in 1760. Children of Edmund3 and Wealthy Ann were Edmund Henry4 Wells; Solomon; Elizabeth; Samuel; Sidney and William (who married his cousin Wealthian Gilbert and had Millicent5 that married Leonard Johnson and had William Wells6 Johnson of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, father of Jesse7 Johnson, president of Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, from 1893 to 1902.
The aforesaid Edmund Henry4 Wells, born about 1771, died at Cambridge, N.Y., "of the spotted fever" in 1813; by his wife, who was also his kinswoman, Hepzibah (daughter of that Ichabod Buell named at p. 131 of cited Bradford Genealogy), he left these Wells Children:
i. Edmund5, b. Ca. 1791, Cambridge, N.Y.; living 1850 at Harmony, Chautauqua County, N.Y.; had issue.
ii. Wealthy, m. John Cooper and was living 1848 at Burton, Ill. Their son, W. B. Cooper, was in 1847 at Saltillo, Mexico, having been enlisted in Adams County, Ill., in the preceding year. He gives his impressions of Texas and part of Mexico in a letter dated in 1847, addressed to his uncle, James5 Wells, whose descendant, Capt. William C. Ball, USN (ret.), of Anaheim, Call has made the information available.
iii. James, in 1850 of Harmony, N.Y.; had issue.
iv. Priscilla, m. ___ Dickinson of Busti, Chautauqua County, N.Y.; had issue.
v. Elizabeth, m. Ransom Curtis of Busti; had issue
vi. Sidney, d. in California, leaving two sons in Albany, N.Y.
vii. Solomon, d. at Quincy, Ill., leaving issue.
viii. Harriet, m. William Slayton of Harmony; issue."
