    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. CAUTION: There is no conclusive proof that William was son of John Rundle and Ann Goldstone. It is conjecture at this point, subject to further research.
The ancestry of William Rundle of Connecticut is currently unproven by any record. Some have theorized he was the same as John Randall who was baptized 2 Jan 1647 in Tonbridge to a father name John who married Ann Goldstone in 1944. Even this date is wrong; the actual record is for 2 Apr1647 (https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=R_22085367701). Further research has been underwhelming and has found no wills for the father or any connection to the supposed Goldstone cousins in America, which would prove such a connection. The earliest record of him in America is dated Dec. 23, 1667 and is a land grant from the town of Greenwich, CT, which imply he at the very least would have been a freeman and over 21 (probably older), which in turn would have him born at the very latest in 1646 -- too early for the the Tonbridge John. The prudent course is to disconnect him from any ancestry and look further into other English records. The connection to Tonbridge seems to be only one of convenience and not of proof.

      2. Miscellaneous comments from Worldconnect:
      A. "William is not found in English records after 1649 and probably came to America with his Gladstone relatives. He was in Greenwich by at least 1674 and all of his children were born there. (Rundle Family Genealogy) That he was the only child of John and Ann Randoll is based on the burial register of his mother."
      B. A variant on the will dates: "Note: Will of William Rundle, dated 22 Oct 1714, probated, 16 Jan 1714/15. Probate file #5348 on file in the Connecticut State Library."

      3. NEHGS, article "Miscellanea, Milford, Conn., Land Records," vol. 5, contributed by Donald Lines Jacobus, M.A., of New Haven, Conn. It would appear that the Mary and Abigail are sisters and daughters of William Tyler:

He signed his mark with an "R" on documents through 1710 and signed with a "W" from 1710 to his death; Abigail signing with an "A".

      5. FHL book 929.273-K727kf: "Knapp's N' Kin, The Ancestral Lines of Frederick H Knapp and Others," compiled by: Frederick H Knapp, Rt. #2, Box 438C, AB Hwy, Richland, Missouri, 65556; 1987; Revised/Updated 1991, provides an variant baptism location: "William Rundle, bapt. 2 Jan 1647 at Scituate, Mass., d. 1716 at Greenwich, CT." [KP: There was a John Randall in Plymouth and it appears this author may have assigned William in error as a son of that John.]

      6. FHL book 929.273 R871rg "Ancestry of Long Island and Greenwich 1667-1992," by Rundall, Austin, Brownhill, Parker (poorly punctuated), pp. 1-21:
"William Rundle Sr. 1, the immigrant and founder of the Rundle family in America may have been the son of John Randoll and Ann Goldstone who married at Tonbridge, Kentshire, England July 08 1644. Their son William was christened April 02 1647 at Tonbridge, coinciding with the era of William Rundle of America. The ancient parish records of Tonbridge also reveal the burial record of Ann "ux John Randoll July 15 1649." No record of John has been found since the death of Ann.
"The parish records establish related families living at Tudeley, Capel, and Hadlow in Kentshire very close to Tonbridge. It was a common practice for relatives to take in orphaned or motherless children to rear as their own. It is possible John took William to relatives or friends for help in rearing the infant or, that the orphaned William was reared by relatives.
No conclusive evidence has been found to provide information concerning William's childhood, youth, or arrival in America. One possibility: as a child he may have come with his remarried father. A second possibility: if orphaned, he was brought as a child by his maternal Goldstone grandparents or relatives to the Lynn, Massachusetts area where other Kentshire emigrants had settled. A third possibility: he may have served with the English troops commanded by Colonel Richard Nicolls who took over the New Netherlands from the Dutch Sep. 08 1664. The troops remained to suppress further hostilities. Many became citizens. There is speculation William Rundle was involved with the troops due to the close relationship he appeared to have with Lieuts. Jonathan Lockwood & William Palmer at Greenwich, CT
No record has been found to establish William's arrival in America. It could have been the 1650's with the Goldstone families. In 1664 Col. Nicholls had recruited men for his troops while at Boston enroute to New York. Or, William may have come from England with the Colonel's troops.
William's earliest documentation in America appears in two separate land records. The first is a recorded document dated May 07 1674 referring to a land gift from his father-in-law William Edwards. The property mentioned was located at the Puritan settlement of Easthampton, Long Island. It states, "...Hannah Rundle, now deceased, was the wife of William Rundle and daughter of William Edwards, grantor..." No deed citing the precise date of the transaction has been found for the above-mentioned property. It is assumed he arrived on Long Island ca 1664. The second document dated Dec. 23 1667 is a land grant from the town of Greenwich, CT to William Rundle. It provides a clue that this transaction occurred close to his 21st birthday. One had to be a freeholder to own land while a freeholder had to be 21 yrs of age. Thus, his probable birth date was December of 1646 which jibes with the baptism of William, son of John & Ann Goldstone Randoll of Tonbridge.
Greenwich Town Records list William Rundle as one of the original 27 town proprietors. They also verify he was a selectman at various times. He appears to have been active in town affairs, and in the education of its Children. Early hand-written records refer to him as Will Rundle. They show he was involved with waterworks. The early town grants of Greenwich document his ownership of water works at Myanos, Horse Neck, and Cos Cob for 27 or more years. The grants give precise instructions as to size, fencing, and location.
William married first ca 1670 Hannah Edwards. She was the daughter of William Edwards & Anna Cole, emigrants to America from Hadlow near Maidstone, Kentshire, England. They settled at Lynn, MA ca 1635 and removed to Easthampton, Long Island by 1653. Hannah Rundle's death occurred prior to 1674. She may have been the mother of John Rundle, first known living child of William Rundle. John may have been named after his presumed paternal grandfather, John Randoll of Tonbridge, Kentshire, England. It is not known if William first knew the Edwards family in England, at, or at Easthampton.
William married second ca 1675 Abigail Mills, daughter of Samuel Mills & Susannah Palmer. Susannah Palmer Mills was the niece of the Palmer men who were neighbors of William Rundle. Abigail Mills is credited with being the mother of the next seven children: Sarah, Mary, Abigail, Deborah, Samuel, Patience, and William. Patience was named for her aunt, Patience Mills Smith, wife of Thomas Smith who resided at Horseneck (West Greenwich). Samuel was named probably for his maternal grandfather, Samuel Mills of Jamaica, Long Island. Abigail died ca 1689 at Greenwich.
William married third ca 1689 Abigail Tyler, youngest daughter of William Tyler & Abigail Terrill, residents of Milford, CT. Abigail Tyler was a sister to Mary Tyler Palmer & Elizabeth Tyler Palmer, wives of Lt. William Palmer & Joseph Palmer. They were brothers of John Palmer who was listed as a partner in William Rundle's first land transaction. The Palmer family played an influential role in the life of William Rundle. (See Chapter 11.) Abigail Tyler is credited with the last six siblings of William1 Rundle's fourteen children. In order of birth they were Hannah, Abraham Elizabeth, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph whose names appear to be biblical choices from the old testament.
William Rundle died ca Oct. or Nov. of 1714 at probable age 67 yrs. If born in 1646, he was just shy of 68 yrs. His widow survived him seven years. One detects his attempt to divide his estate equally among his sons in his last Will & Testament. The estate inventory gives insight to the lives of the Rundle family. It included the usual tools used by colonists for farming and building trades, plus equipment used in processing and weaving of cloth. William had numerous parcels of land, some of which he deeded to children before his death. Among the inventoried items were an old bible and 3 old sermon books. The document, written by Samuel Finch, was witnessed by his friends and neighbors, Daniel Smith and Thomas Marshall. His legal signature was a "W" instead of the usual "X" made by many colonists. The colonial land record deeds of Greenwich establish that William Rundle signed his early legal documents with an "R". In 1710 he switched to a "W"and continued this practice his final four years.

Note: Ann Edwards, mother of Hannah, was ordered to pay a fine of 3 pounds or have her tongue put in a "cleft sticke" as the result of a dispute with another lady over Ann's petticoat in 1651. Having a fiery temper she lashed out at all concerned when charged, including William. She created quite a scene.
Note: William Edwards, father of Hannah, was Town constable at East Hampton in 1654. Ann was Irish, and William was Welch, but they came together to Lynn, MA from Maidstone, England. He d. 1685; she d. 6/3/1700. Hannah Edward's siblings: John2 d 1693; Thomas2 d April 16 1698; Ephraim2 d. y.; Sarah2 m1 Nathaniel Dominy; m2 Robert Moore; Ann2 in John Squires; Elizabeth2 in -?- Baker; plus East Hampton Town Records. v. 5 lists "William2 (by marriage 2) bp 1705; Ebenezer2 bp May 2 1708. (Wm1 died 1685 so ??)
Note: Abigail Tyler had sisters: Mary who married William Palmer of Greenwich; and Elizabeth who married Joseph Palmer of Greenwich; as well as Sarah, Hannah, and Ruth Tyler. Her brothers were William, John, Thomas, and Ephraim Tyler. It is probable that Abigail met William Rundle while visiting her sisters at Greenwich.
Note: William Rundle received a grant of land Dec. 30 1670 for part of the uppermost meadows lying south of the Westchester Path, and on Mar. 1 1671 8 acres of land to be laid out by the Mianus River. He was "one of 27 Proprietors of 1672" at Horse Neck which they purchased from the Indians. He was one of about 50 legal voters in 1688.

In the light of this the Tonbridge family is worthy of further investigation especially... as this place is only about ten miles from the Edwards' family home at Maidstone... it may be that William was an only child and that his parents died when he was young, and I shall explore this possibility in the Tonbridge registers.
...Tonbridge was a market town and also one of the towns where some Huguenot refugees from France settled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Many of them were weavers so it is natural that they would have settled in a place where a weaving industry was already operating. Although only circumstantial evidence it does make for optimism that we are researching the right area." -cj parry

      1. Transcript Original Parish Registers Tonbridge, Kent Burials 1647-1670: "July 15, 1649 'ux John Randell' buried." Note: "ux" = spouse.
"...the burial registers show why we found no siblings for William - his mother died in 1649. This William appears to be a real possibility for your emigrant ancestor and I think we now need to look for his father John's death in case there is a will which might tell us more. ... gone through all indexes... have copies of all Randle/Randell etc. references... Regrettably, nothing for a John or William comes within 'our' period, and none of the other references seem to be relevant to "family."
