    • RESEARCH_NOTES: 1. Website http://mysite.verizon.net/vze3sbrn/Benjamin.htm accessed 19 Nov 2011, "Geneology Information - Applegates of Ocean County, New Jersey," prepared by Richard Kuntz, Allenwood, NJ (Updated - 1/2018); source abbreviations are explained on the website:
"Benjamin Johnston The following quote is taken from "History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties" - Edwin Salter p. lxxvi: "... Benjamin Johnson was one of the earliest settlers at Toms River whose name has been preserved. His residence is referred to in old surveys about 1741." As a result, it is appropriate to assume that Benjamin was at least 21 at the time. Hence, an approximate birth date would be ca. 1720.
Benjamin was listed in the 1773 Revolutionary Census as a resident of Dover Twp. - Kenn Stryker-Rodda
Benjamin was listed in the Dover Twp. tax ratables (GMNJ) for the year 1779
The following will abstract is found in NJAW: A Will for Benjamin Johnson of Dover Twp. was proved on March 23, 1784. The Will lists: wife - Sarah, children: John, Daniel, William, James, David, Amos, Rachel Lemon, Elizabeth Cravat, Hannah Jacobs, Rebecah Cole, Lydia Thomson.
Some researchers in the past have identified Sarah, wife of Benjamin, as Sarah Swallow. However, recent research has discounted that assumption. Sarah Swallow was a daughter of Johannes Swallow of East Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ and the wife of a different Benjamin Johnson, also of Amwell Township who was a contemporary of, but different from Benjamin Johnson of Dover. Benjamin Johnson of Dover Township, died testate there in 1784, and his will was proved on March 23, 1784. [Archives of the State of NJ, First Series, NJ Calendar of Wills, Vol. VI, 1781-1785] Benjamin Johnson of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, died intestate in 1794. Papers of administration dated March 21, 1794 listed administrators Isaac Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Benjamin Johnson of said place, and Benjamin Morgan of Hopewell Twsp. Fellowbondsman was William Palmer of Amwell. [Archives of the State of NJ, First Series, NJ Calendar of Wills, Vol. VIII, 1791-1795, p. 202.]
The following events have been recorded: Rachel Johnson married William Liming on 5/17/1750 [NJ Archives Vol. XX Marriage Records]
      Notes:
      (1) If one assumes that Rachel was the oldest and married at 15 and Benjamin was at least 20 at the time of her marriage, then Benjamin was born not later than 1715.
      (2) A note in the files at the Monmouth County Historical Society have recorded the parents of Benjamin as William Johnson b. 1/29/1698. I have not found any other reference to that fact. Benjamin Johnston, b. ca. 1715, d. 1784; m. Sarah Unknown b. ?, d. ? Issue:
      -John (ca. 1755-1830+); m. Margaret Unknown (? - ?)
      -Daniel (?-ca. 1792)
      -William (ca. 1740-ca. 1811); m. (6/5/1782) Jane Polhemos (? - ?) [2018 revision removes wife.]
      -James (ca. 1755-1830 +)
      -David (ca. 1755-ca, 1835); m. Rebecca Unknown (? - ?)
      -Amos (?-?); m. (2/13/1762) Mary Clayton (? - ?)"
      -Rachel (?-?); m. (5/17/1750) William Liming (? - ?)
      -Elizabeth (?-?)
      -Hannah (?-?)
      -Rebeccah (?-?)
      -Lydia (?-?)"

      2. Richard Kuntz makes the following statement in the quote above:
"If one assumes that Rachel was the oldest and married at 15 and Benjamin was at least 20 at the time of her marriage, then Benjamin was born ca. 1715."riag
I emailed him 17 Jan 2018 about his statement:
"Did you mean to mention "at the time of HIS marriage"? Also why pick 15 at her time of marriage. Say she was 19 or older. And say he was 21 to 25? This would give a birth for Benj. say 1705-1710? I feel the all of your ages were probably skewed too young to try to fit Benjamin in as a potential son of William b. 1698. I am thinking it more likely that they could potentially be brothers? Thoughts?"
Richard responded 22 Jan 2018 as follows:
"You are right - I meant to say at the time of her birth. If Rachel was 15 at time of marriage, she was born ca. 1735. if Benjamin was approx. 20 at the time of her marriage, then he was born ca. 1715.
Summary: It appears more likely that Benjamin and William were probably brothers rather than son and father.

      3. Email from Richard Kuntz dated 20 Dec 2017:
"Food for thought regarding Benjamin Johnson. There is (was) a historic section of Toms River (Dover Township) called: Dr. Johnson’s Long Swamp. It appears that the area also included the section of land now called Island Heights. There are some old maps (late 1600 or early 1700) where that section was identified with the name D. Johnson. Many of Benjamin’s descendants resided in that section of the township. At the time, I did some searching for a “Dr. Johnson” I did find a reference to such a person with connection to southern Monmouth County. I attempted to follow that, but got involved in other things. That effort was done most likely in the 1990s."
