    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. FHL book 929.242 G868f "The Greswold Family, 12 Generations in England," researched and edited by Robert L. and Esther G. French, comp. by Coralee Griswold [Wethersfeld, CT; 1999]. The authors standardize spelling as Greswold for England and Griswold for America. As of 2012, it appears that this book is the most current evolution of the Griswold ancestry and includes all previous research up to 1999 when it was published. (It also supersedes the author's own work in 1990 for the later English generations). See notes in this database of the original Griswold for a more detailed explanation of the various sources and a bibliography of previously published books that the authors include in this genealogical compilation.
      "Richard8 Greswold (John7, John6, John5, William4, Richard3, Ralph2, John1) was born about 1470. Richard died 17 Sep 1537 in Solihull, Warwickshire, England, and was buried in St.
Alphege Church Cemetery in Solihull. He married (1) Joan STOCKLEY about 1498. She was born about 1476 in Yoxall, England. Joan died after 1517 in Solihull and is also buried at St. Alphege Church Cemetery.
The senior line of Griswolds from this generation forward descend from Richard who is in the Visitation of 1619 and is so prominent in the history of St. Alphege.
They had 8 children: [John and Thomas are followed in Pemberton, pp. 42-44, the other children are followed by Philpott. Philpott pp. 2, 3 describes these in the order John, Thomas, George, Humphrey, Roger. This makes the birth years rather uncertain (John was surely the eldest and Thomas clearly was next).]
      i. John Greswold, born about 1500, died after 19 Jul 1536.
ii. Thomas Greswold, born about 1502, died 8 Jul 1577.
iii. Roger Greswold, born about 1504, died 8 Jul 1551. [The memorial of Roger's daughter calls him the 3d son, the Visitation says 5th, which would put his birth about 1511, just ahead of George and seems more reasonable as his children were christened in 1550/51.]
iv. Humphrey Greswold, of Mosely born about 1506. He married Isabel GREVES 20 Feb 1552 in King's Norton, Warwickshire, England. [Family History Library, IGI.] Humphrey died 8 Sep 1570 in King's Norton, Warwickshire, England. He left a detailed will dated 5 Sep, proved 30 Sep 1570, but had no children of his own.
      v. Peter Greswold, born about 1510, died without a record nor Children.
vi. Alice Greswold, born about 1512. She married John HARDIE/HADDUP. Alice died after 1577.
vii. George Greswold, born April 1513, in Worcestershire, England. He was a cleric. At Corpus 28 Sept 1850, from Diocese of Worcester; sup. for BA 1533, fellow All Souls 1535, sup. for. MA 1537, ordained 1538, Rector of Michelmarsh, Hants, by 1545 till death. Vicar of Wingrave, Bucks, 1556, prebendary of Itchen Abbas, Hants, admitted 14 Jan 1858, died before Jan 1559 (1558/59). [Oxford University Records, Registrum Universitatis Oxon, p. 176; photocopies provided by Sonia Howson.]
viii. Joan Greswold, born about 1517. She married Hugh TANDIE 14 Jun 1539 in Solihull, Warwickshire, England. Joan died after 1577.
Richard married (2) Alice (___) but they had no children. She was buried 8 April 1547. Her will was proved 4 May at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. It mentions (step) sons Thomas, Humphrey, John (deceased), John's daughters, Anne and Alice. It mentions also her brothers, Roger Stonley & Richard Salt. [Philpott, p. 2 "one of these may give a clue to her maiden name." The Visitation of 1619 (p. 61) says Richard Salle of Poxley married Elizabeth Stockley, youngest sister of Joan. (Was their brother, Roger Stockley, the priest, Alice's brother Roger Stonley, the heir, whose name was mistranscribed? If so, who was Alice? There is a hint that her name at some point was Stockley, an unmentioned sister of Joan and Elizabeth or possibly the widow of John Stockley who had died without issue before Alice married Richard?).]"
