    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. From the book "A Biographical History of Darke County, Ohio," Evansville, Ind., 1900, p. 233, we find Isaac Winner with a wife Mary Powell, both of New Jersey. "JOHN LEOPOLD WINNER. Merchant, banker and legislator of Greenville, Ohio, J. P. Winner was born in Franklin, Warren county, Ohio, November 19, 1816. His parents were Isaac and Mary (Powell) Winner, natives of New Jersey. They were married in Philadelphia and in 1816 came to Ohio, where they passed their lives. Mrs. Winner died in April, 1832, and her husband in October, following. For about four years subsequent to his father's death our subject worked at the cooper's trade. In April, 1836, he came to Darke county and located in Greenville, where he extensively identified himself with the business of the community and also held prominent places in the political councils of the county and state. In November, 1837, he married Miss Charlotte Clark, daughter of John Clark, Esq., of Warren county, Ohio. For some five years Mr. Winner was in the grocery business. Eight years he kept a hotel. Four years he kept a drug store. In 1853 he engaged in banking in company with the late Colonel J. W. Frizell; and thus continued till May, 1865, when he became a stockholder in the Farmers National Bank of Greenville, and in January, 1866, he was made cashier of that institution, which position he held until January, 1872. In April, 1873, he opened the Exchange Bank of Greenville and conducted the business of that flourishing institution. His wife died August 12, 1863. She possessed in a high degree those noble qualities of mind and heart so essential to a true wife, and was revered in the community for her sweetness of disposition and sympathizing charity for the poor and unfortunate. She left an only daughter, Hattie, who inherited the sterling qualities of her mother, but the loss of her mother so affected her that she survived her but a few weeks, dying at the age of fifteen years. On April 1, 1867, Mr. Winner married Mrs. Jane Crider, of Greenville, daughter of John W. Porter, of the same place. In 1863 Mr. Winner became a member of the firm of Moore & Winner, which for a long time was one of the leading dry-goods firms of the county. In 1846 he was appointed auditor of Darke county, and from 1857 to 1861 he represented Darke county in the legislature of the state, and from 1867 to 1871 he served in the state senate. In 1874 he was elected mayor of Greenville and served two years. In politics he was a Democrat. Although his school advantages were very meager, his active mind grasped a knowledge of men and things that fully compensated the loss. During the years 1861-63 he was treasurer of the .committee to secure a county fund to encourage enlistments in the Union army and gave the subject much attention. He died several years ago."

      2. FHL book 977.1763 H2h "The History of Warren County, Ohio...," by W.H. Beers & Co., pp. 520-21, shows Isaac Winner in 1819, 1825-1828, and 1830 as a town officer in the capacity of "Trustee." In 1830 he is also listed as "Marshal."

      3. Censuses:
      1820 US: Franklin Twp., Warren, Ohio, 7 Aug 1820, p. 11 (bro. Samuel is on p. 7):
      I. Winner, males: 1<10, 2@16-25, 1>45; females: 3<10, 1@26-44.

1830 US: Franklin, Warren, Ohio, p. 23 (brother Samuel is 3 pages away):
      Isaac Winner, males: 2<5, 1@5-9, 1@10-14, 1@40-49; females: 3<5, 1@5-9, 1@15-19, 1@40-49.

      4. FHL book "Warren County Marriage Consents, Warren County, Ohio, 1803-1903," by Ellen Van Houten and Florence Cole, 1988. Compilers note that the probate court in Warren co. has been fortunate not to have had any fire that would destroy the Court House records, which begin 1803. Marriage consents have been filmed by the FHL. We find the following, but I am unsure of the relationship if any with Isaac's ward:
"28 Jun 1827: M. Hays & Mary Ann Ricard, by Isaac Winner Guardian for Mary Ann Ricard."

      5. FHL book "List of Letters Remaining at the Lebanon, Ohio Post Office 1816-1830," comp. by Mary M. Everhart fo the Warren County Genealogical Society, 2007. The complier notes: "The local newspapers, Western Star and Lebanon Gazette, advertised a "List of Letters" remaining at the Post Office at Lebanon, Ohio, which, if not taken out in three months, would be sent to the General Post Office as dead letters. These notices were advertised quarterly, starting on January 1.
      On page 95:
      -Isaac Winer, Jul 1828
      -Isaac Winner, Oct 1827
      -Isaac Winner, Oct 1828

      6. Don Thomas email 24 Jun 2004:
He indicates: "1821 - have copy of deed to two pieces of land he bought in Franklin... He was on the various tax lists from 1821 on."
"On 10 June Samuel Winner of Warren county purchased 80.76 acres of land "west of the Greater Miami" in Montgomery County - that's just north of Franklin - and was patented by BLM.
On 1 Nov. 1830 Isaac Winner of Warren county purchasd 80.44 acres "West of the Greater Miami" in Montgomery county. I didn't follow up on Samuel, but Isaac died in 1832 and i find no record of this land, nor did I find any record of it being sold prior to his death."
"In going through the probate papers, deeds, bills of sales, etc. I noticed that Isaac's wife would sign as "Mary" and/or "Catherine." So maybe her name was Mary Catherine Powell. Even on the same document it would be Mary in one place and Catherine in another."

      7. Marriages of children:
      A. FHL book 977.1763 V2h "Warren County - Ohio, Marriage Records 1803-1834," by Willard Heiss (Indianapolis, 1977), p. 161:
-Isaac Terry and Elizabeth Winner, 2 Jan 1834, p. 462. [Note: Elizabeth does not show up in the estate settlement; however, there is a Mrs. Terry who is acting as a guardian for the minor Catherine Winner. Mrs. Terry may be the mother of Isaac Terry, the groom.]
-John S. Haller and Hannah Winner, 25 May 1820, p. 371. [Note: Judging from other entries in the book, the year is probably a bad transcription for 1830 (i.e. p. 365 is 9 Dec 1829, p. 373 is 15 Jul 1830, etc.).]
      B. FHL book 977.1763 V2v "1834-1854 Marriage Records, Warren Co., OH, Probate Court," by Ellen Van Houten and Florence Cole, 1995:
      -p. L024: John L. Winner and Charlotte Clark, 20 Nov 1837.
-p. L186: Wm. McAndless and Amy Winner, 24 Aug 1844.
-p. 263: Phillp Wear and Catharine Winner, 20 Nov 1844.

      8. Email Don Thomas 27 Jan 2003 and 20 Jun 2004 combined into one listing of children as follows: "Isaac Winner - Children: John L. Winner born 18 Nov 1816 in Warren County, Ohio; died 1880 in Granville, Licking, Ohio: was a successful businessman and banker. Married Charlotte Clark. William Powell Winner (my gg Grandfather) born 30 Aug 1820 in Warren County, Ohio; died 1903 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. Married Mary Moss 31 Dec 1846 in Van Buren County, Iowa. Amy Winner born 18 Jun 1821 in Warren County, Ohio; died 24 Jun 1860 in Red Lion, Warren, Ohio; married William Arter McCandless on 26 Aug 1843 in Warren County, Ohio. After Amy died, William married Amy's sister, Delilah. Delilah Winner born 1827 in Warren County, Ohio. It is said that her marriage was of convenience as her sister had 8 children. William Arter McCandless and Delilah had one child. Hannah Winner no birth date. May not belong here as she married John L. Haller on 8 Jun 1820 in Warren County, Ohio. [KP note: She does belong here because 1820 date is mistranscription and should be 1830.] Mary Ann Winner no birth date; that's all I know. Catherine Winner no birth date, born in Warren Co., OH; married Phillip Wear on 20 Nov 1844 in Warren County, Ohio Eden B. Winner no birth date; went to Iowa with William P. Winner; married Sarah W. Evart on 31 Dec 1855 in Jefferson County, Iowa, George Winner no birth date."

      9. Email Don Thomas 20 Jun 2004; Don is a descendant of Isaac, lives in the same area, and was 73 at the time he wrote this. In commenting on all of his research into Isaac and his family: "Now this is a small part of my files and I have lots of documents on Isaac and his children in Ohio, but NOTHING on his parents!"
This confirms that Isaac was not born in Ohio and was from elsewhere.

      DEATH:
      1. Don Thomas email 20 Jun 2004:
      A. "On the 28th day of February AD 1836, before me the undersigned, an Acting Justice of the Peace, in and for the County aforesaid personally appeared John S. HaIler, who being duly sworn declared that he kept & supported William Winner, infant son of Isaac Winner, dec'd for at the cost their work since the decedant and within 12 months thereafter and the balance of the time since his death, said William has been residing part of the time with his uncle Jonathon of Brown County, Ohio, and part of the time with James Cafferty of this county, neither of whom as affiantis informed and believe intend to charge anything for the keeping & supporting said William.
Also Amy resided with Doctor Evans, her guardian of Franklin, Ohio.
Also Catherine Winner, another minor heir is in the care of Mrs. Terry(?).
Also Eden B. Winner, Delilah Winner and George Winner in care of John S. Haller who charged $123 for all of these."
      B. "Received from John S. Hailer, one of the administrators of the estate of Isaac Winner, dec'd, the sum of three dollars for digging two graves for Isaac Winner and his wife." 5 Feb 1833 Lewis Knipple (his mark)"
      C. "Also John S. HaIler is the husband of Hannah Winner. Mr. HaIler was a very prominent man about town."

      2. FHL book "Warren County, Ohio, Will & Estate Records," by Ellen Van Houten and Florence Cole, 1993. Compilers note that the probate court in Warren co. has been fortunate not to have had any fire that would destroy the Court House records, which begin 1803. The oldest probates are labeled "OCP."
      A. "Estate of John C. Finney. OCP 36 #11 - Docket Estate O p.296 - 26 Dec 1825; residence: Franklin Twp.; administrator: Isaac Winner; heirs: widow Mary and one unnamed child. [I am not sure if there is a relationship or just friendship.]"
      B. "Estate of Isaac Winner. OCP 56 #1 - Docket Estate O p.487 - 20 Oct 1832; residence: Franklin; administrators: John L. Haller and Jonathan Mooney. Heirs: dau. Hannah, dau. Mary Ann, son William residing in Warren Co. with uncle Jonathan Winner part of the time in Warren Co. with uncle James Cafferty, dau. Amy lives part of the time with Dr. Evans her guardian in Franklin, OH, dau. Catherine lives with Mrs. Terry in Warren co, son Eden B., dau. Delilah, son George, son John. Note: Isaac & his wife Cathe[r]ine both dead by 15 Feb 1833." [Mary Powell seemed to alternate between the names of Mary and Catherine (see separate note in her notes). The administrator John L. Haller was Isaac's son-in-law married to Hannah Winner.]
      C. I include this one because of the reference to an uncle James Cafferty in Isaac's estate above: "Will of Samuel Phillips. OCP 70 #3 - Docket Estate 1/2 p.109 - 20 Jun 1836; residence: Franklin Twp.; executor James McEwen; date signed: 3 Dec 1831. Heirs: widow Hannah, James Caffety husband of Kezia, Samuel Harris son of Morris and Ann Harris of Montgomery Co., OH, children of Kezia Cafferty."
More on those listed in Samuel Phillip's will. Also who is "uncle" James Cafferty and how is related? I am unsure but include some research as follows:
      a. This is a long shot, but could Hannah, wife of Samuel Phillips, might be a sister of Jonathan Winner. In the 1850 Census of Franklin, Warren Co. Hannah Phillips, age 65, b. NJ, is living with James Cafferty, age 45, NJ, with a later wife Margaret. She is living with them in 1860 and 1870, but just as Hannah Cafferty. This is probably her death record below from familysearch.org. It directly conflicts with this theory of her parents since her father's name is strange.
Name: Hannah Cafferty, white, widowed, no spouse name given.
Death: 5 Jul 1870 Franklin, Warren, Ohio; age: 86
      Birth: 1784, N.J.
      Occupation: Miller
Parents: Wm. Hawksai and W. A. Maben, no birth place of parents given.
      Source Film Number: 384218
      Reference Number: v. 1, p. 44
      b. Family Search: Warren Co., Ohio marriage record for James Cafferty and Keziah Phillips 12 Oct 1828. Also same county for James Cafferty and Margaret Weer 21 Oct 1849.

      4. Don Thomas email 24 Jun 2004: "There was a cholera epidemic in 1832 and 1833. Now Isaac and Mary died pretty close to each other timewise, but none of the children died. That seems odd to me. It does appear that they were buried in the "back" yard. Someone mentioned to me that maybe that was done because the cemeteries wouldn't accept a body involved in a Cholera epidemic. Plausible."
On 20 Jun 2004, Don also wrote: "I suspect that both... were buried on his property, as there are No records of him being buried in a cemetery in Warren County - all have been transcribed."
