- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. Per website http://home.inu.net/sadie/index.htm for father-in-law John Magnum. See his notes for full and lengthy text of wills, deeds, bio. info, and misc. info which includes mention of this individual.
2. FHL Film 1697868 and book "The Mangums of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Utah, and Adjoining States," by John T. Palmer, Ph.D. Santa Rosa, CA 95409, 1993, 3rd ed., p. 86, the author places him as a son of John Mangum the immigrant, which is contrary to the position I take with Joseph thus far in my database:
"Joseph Mangum, b. ca 1710, Isle of Wight Co., VA, d. 28 Feb 1762, Isle of Wight, m. Lucy ___. The first record we have of Joseph is a 1737 deed in Isle of Wight, indicating that he was of age. Joseph know and probably was kin to the family fo Henry Mangum, Sr; both were associated with the Person family. Issue [I only list the first generation of children; however, the book has further descendancy]:
a. Micajah Mangum, b. bef 1762 (oldest son), Rev. War soldier, wounded at Yorktown, m. Elizabeth ___, d. Isle of Wight, VA, shortly after the war, 'leaving 3 daughters and one son." (Footnote: Source is MFB, Issue 9, March 1971 notes that Micajah, writing from Goochland Co., VA, sent a letter to Willie Person Mangum, Senator from NC. The letter contained a great deal of genealogical information.)"
BIRTH:
1. Guess only.
MARRIAGE:
1. Guess only. Joseph was born and died in Isle of Wight Co. Assumed marriage is in Isle of Wight Co.
DEATH:
1. "The Mangum-Mangham-Mangrum Journal," Issue No. 55, January 2005 [Formerly "Mangum Family Bulletin"], James L. Parham, pp. 39-46, from which we can surmise probable death date of Lucy:
"[From] miscellaneous letters from a series sent to the editor by Thomas Mangum Powell in the 1960's and 1970's.
"Will of Joseph Mangum; Feb 27, 1762 in Isle of Wight; probated in Isle of Wight May 6, 1762. Names eldest son, Micajah as co-executor with Lucy, wife. Names also sons: Elisha & Josiah. Witnesses: Henry Mangum and Jacob Person; William Davis and Samuel Person…
Inventory & Appraisement of Estates; Isle of Wight County, Ordered: Aug 4, 1762: Joseph Mangum.
An appraisal of this estate was not returned to the court until July 3, 1777. James M. Pitman & Thomas Cofer were witnesses… The discrepancy in the probate of the will and the inventory of his estate is probably explained by the likelihood that the wife and mother, Lucy passed about 1777."
