- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. Yeoman in Cadhayne, Colyton Parish, Devonshire. 1579 - Church Warden.
2. Article from the Gillette family file at the Windsor Historical Society by Gary Boyd Roberts entitled "Genealogies of Conn. families from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register," vol. II, Baltimore, 1983, Gen. Pub. Co., Inc., pp. 35-37:
"The Brothers Jonathan and Nathan Gillett and Some of Their Descendants. Compiled by Alice Lucinda Priest, B.L., of Brookline, Mass.
The descendants of the Puritan brothers Jonathan and Nathan Gillett of Dorchester, Mass., and Windsor, Conn., were and almost surely are, numerous, yet there is an interesting opportunity for much further investigation of records to identify all the lines through the genealogical reference library at 9 Ashburton Place, Boston.
...Another very important publication is the April 1939 'American Genealogist' ten-page report of John Insley Coddington, A.M., on 'Jonathan Gillett of Dorchester, Mass., and Windsor, Conn., and Mary Dolbere or Dolbiar, his Wife.' As the title indicates, its important and convincing mission was to establish the fact of the marriage and the genealogical bacground of the bride and the believed background of the groom, with no purpose of a record of descendants beyond their children...
Therefore Mr. Coddington's 1939 opening statement is even more than the strongest kind of circumstantial evidence. It is as follows:
'The Parish Register of St. Andrew's Church at Colyton, co. Devon, contains the following marriage record:
'1634 Jonathan Gillett & Mary Dolbiar, 29 March.'
'This is the answer to the question of the long-sought identity of Mary, wife of Jonathan Gillett, the emigrant from England to Dorchester, Mass., and settler at Windsor, Conn.'
Mr. Coddington's next statement is: 'There can be very little doubt but that Jonathan Gillett was the son of the Reverand William Gillett or Gyllett, Rector of Chaffcombe, co. Somerset, who was instituted to that benefice 4 Feb 1609-10, and who died early in 1641', etc. And there are five valuable pages on the ancestry of Mr. Dolbiar (Dolbere) that should all be read. They include the Colyton baptism: '1607, Mary, d. of Rockye Dolebeere, 7 June.' '1571 Rawkey, s. of Robarte Dolber of Caddhayn, 17 August.' The marriages: '1563 Robert Dolbere of Cadden & Agnes, d. of one Samson, Hawkechurche, 26 April.' '1602 Rockye Dolber, s. of Robert Dolber of Cadhaine & Marie, d. of John Michell of Barretshaine, 10 October.' "

"Jonathan Gillett returned to England and married Mary Dolbiar, in Colyton, Devon on 29 Mar. 1634. He remained in England one year after their marriage and then they sailed to New England on the ship, "Recovery of London", which sailed from Weymouth, England on 31 Mar. 1635. How he met a girl from Colyton is not known. However, the "Mary & John" passenger, George Hull of Crewkerne, had two brothers who were ministers at Colyton, the last being, Rev. William Hill, who died there in 1627.

"Mary Dolbiar, was bpt. 7 June 1607, Colyton, Devon. She d. 5 Jan. 1685, Windsor, CT. She m. Jonathan Gillett, 29 Mar. 1633/4, Colyton, two days before they sailed to New England from Weymouth, Dorset, on the "Recovery of London". Since Colyton is about 30 miles west of Weymouth, maybe this ship made a stop at Plymouth, Devon (as did the "Mary & John" in 1630), 60 miles W. of Colyton and they boarded a week or so later. She was the dau. of Rawkey Dolbiar and Mary Michell. NOTE: All Dolbiar baptism, marriage and burial entries in the Colyton, Devon Parish Registers (1538-1630) appear in TAG 15: 212-213.
