    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Source of christening, marriage, and burial information from extracts of the Registers of Arlington Parish Church, Sussex, England from 1700 onwards by correspondence (copy on file) of 30 Nov 1953 from George Mitchell of Berwick Rectory, Nr. Polegate, Sussex. Cover letter reads: "In reply to your request for information about the Osborne family, I have searched the Registers from 1700 onwards, and find the entries given on the enclosed sheet. It is unfortunate that the marriage entries are so few, but it must be remembered that marriages usually take place in the woman's parish, and there is no means of finding out where this might be apart from inspecting the registers of the district. I have no record at all under the name of Daw; Con Osborne is married to Sarah Coleman in his 24th year, but if this is the Sarah who died in 1806, he may have married again between 1806 and 1813, though for the reason given the marriage would not be in the Arlington Registers. I have an older Register going back to 1609, but I have not searched this; it is in latin, and would take some time to go through... There is no one of the name of Osborne in the parish now, and my oldest inhabitants cannot remember any family of this name. The parish, which still covers about 24 square miles, was twice as large until 1845, when a 'daughter' parish was carved out of it, and it may be that there are entries after this year in the records of that Parish... If you are interested in 'your old Church,' I may say that it is an unusually fine one, and dates back before the landing of the Conqueror..." He also notes: "It is more than likely that 'Osborne' and 'Osborn' are the same family, and 'Edward' and 'Edmond' may be the same person." Definitely related ones so far are indicated with an (*).

      4. Email form Val Bray [mailto:valjoy.bray@yahoo.com.au], July 20, 2006: "Dear Kerry, my 3xggf was Walter,a brother to your Cornelius I. I have been tracing the family in England (I live in Australia) and might have some information for you. The parents of Cornelius and Walter were Edmond and Ann Bartholomew who were married in Folkington parish on 21 Nov 1771. He is shown as ORSBOUND. Ann was bapt. there on 21 Sep 1750 (she died aged 80 in Arlington 5 Oct 1820). Her parents were John Bartholomew and Ann Kyd who were married in Folkington on 18 Oct 1747. Also bapt. there on 28 Mar 1773 to Robert (this is an error - should be Edmund as there are no other Osbornes in the village) and Ann Orsbound a daughter named Dinah. Dinah and Cornelius married a brother and sister - John and Sarah Coleman in Arlington whose parents were Thomas Coleman and Ann Bartholomew (a relation ?) who married on the 3 May 1771 in Hailsham. I have other information on this family if you would like it."

      5. This individual is tentative based on the following email from Val Bray [mailto:valjoy.bray@yahoo.com.au], Aug 2, 2006:
Looking at the marriage of Edmund Osborne and Mary Bishop in Arlington on 6 Apr 1735. A Thomas Osborne married Avis (Annie) Wesson in Arlington on 5 Jun 1683 then moved to Hellingly, Sussex where these children were born. Avice (Annie) bapt. 26 Jan 1685, Thomas 16 Apr 1687, Jane 1 Dec 1688, Avice 2 Dec 1690, Edmund 26 Oct 1692 (?), Amy 17 Aug 1695, Mary 29 Jul 1697.
Also in Hellingly a William Bishop married Mary Walls on 23 Jan 1709. Their children are Mary bapt. 8 Jul 1711 (?), John Jervis 6 Jul 1712, died 9 Jul 1712, William 6 Jul 1712, died 9 Jul 1712, Sarah 6 Sep 1713, died 26 Jul 1718, William 7 Jan 1715. This would make Edmund 42 and Mary 23 when they married. They are probably the parents of our Edmund but I am still looking for the birth of their children.
Follow-up email from Val Bray 22 March 2013: "I am unable to trace any children to Edward/Edmund Osborn and Mary Bishop so this is just a possibility as the dates are right with Ann Batholomew being born in 1750. This was the time that John Wesley was preaching and the non-comformists didn't keep very good records."
My comments: If we look at the names of the children our Edmund/Edward Osborn and Ann Bartholomew, we find some very unique names. Those names do not occur in the Hellingly Osborns and so naming practices would seem to indicate that there probably is not a direct link. I concur with Val that the Edmund Osborne who married Mary Bishop is enticing, but there just is not enough data to make the link until other children can be found of that marriage to establish a pattern. I also am not satisfied that the Bishops of Hellingly are necessarily the parents of the same Mary Bishop since there are several Mary Bishops born in the same timeframe throughout Sussex. One last note, I did look at the Arlington Parish Records, and there are no Osbornes born there in our time frame nor a Mary Bishop; apparently several marriages occurred there for person outside of the parish.
