  • Notes
    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Reviewed Ancestry.com 23 Nov 2002.

      2. We can establish that Elizabeth's surname is Muse. All of the christening records of their children show parents as Joseph and Elizabeth Burnhope; however the christening records for their last two children show the mother's maiden name as Elizabeth Muse:
-"Chr. 14 Apr 1799 (b. 7 Apr 1799), Mary, d. of Joseph Burnhope, native of Hexham, by his wife Elizabeth Muse, native of this Chapelry, residing at Woodhall Mill."
-"10 Jan 1802 (b. 8 Nov 1801), Margaret, 4th dau. of Joseph Burnhope of Woodhall Mill, miller, native of Hexham, by his wife Elizabeth Muse, native of this Chapelry."

      3. In reviewing christenings from a transcription book of Haydon Bridge baptisms 1654-1665 and 1677-1991, which I cut off at 1880, there are only two sets of Burnhopes listed - seven children of Joseph Burnhope and Elizabeth and the first five children of Joseph Burnhope (1811-1881) and Ann Hunter.

      BIRTH
      1. Elizabeth Muse's birth date and place is now determined to be 1761 in Haydon Bridge to a father named Michael. Here is the logic of how it was found.
We know that her marriage could occur no later than 1782 since children are born starting 1783. Assuming such, Elizabeth would have had to be at least 16 or older for her marriage making for a probable birth date no later than 1766. This would have been earlier than most women were married in this area since 21 was considered full age of consent; this would then give us a secondary ideal birth date of no later than 1761. We also now know from an actual viewing of two of her children's christening records in the Haydon Chapelry (see below) that our Elizabeth was a native of the Haydon Chapelry.
Even so, I transcribed and reviewed all Mewis, Muis, Muse, Meuse, etc specifically from Haydon Bridge from 1692 to 1804 and linked them together in conjunction with New Family Search as of 3 Aug 2009. In this same analysis of Haydon Bridge christenings, I can find no Elizabeth in the broad time period we need except for one Elizabeth, dau. of Michael chr. 1761 in Haydon Bridge. The date and location are perfect! Ancestry.com's "England and Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906" also shows the same Elizabeth Mewis, chr. 20 Aug 1761 at Haydon Bridge, Northumberland, England, dau. of Michael Mewis of Elrington. (Date is error since the actual record says 20 Sep 1761.) This is the only entry remotely close to Elizabeth Muse anywhere in England in that particular Ancestry.com database as it exists currently; however, that database is a work in progress and not totally comprehensive. Coincidentally, Elrington, as reported in the christening record, is a little under two miles to Haydon Bridge and happens to be the nearest settlement right next to where all of Joseph and Elizabeth Muse Burnhope's children would be born at the Woodhall Mill farmstead. It appears Elrington was considered part of Haydon even though since it is only two miles to Haydon as compared to next nearest church in Hexham about four miles away. From other entries in the christening records, Elrington is mentioned occasionally in the Haydon Bridge Church records.
In reviewing the christening entries, the above referenced 1761 christening is the only entry for a child of Michael of Elrington, or for that matter any other Michael between 1748 and 1804 (after which I stopped checking). Children of Michael occurring before 1748 all belong to the following Michael and Ann Bell - Ancestry.com's "England and Wales Marriage Records, 1538-1940," marriage in Haydon, Northumberland of Michael Mewis and Ann Bell, 29 May 1732; however this couple would be relatively too old to be having a child 29 years into their marriage (and from my research their children seem to be pretty much accounted for between 1732 to 1748 - see New Family Search).
These are the two entries from Haydon church records, FHL film 991796, which indicate Elizabeth Muse was a native the parish of Haydon Bridge and so the above comment does appear to be our Elizabeth:
New Family Search has what appears to be an erroneous connection of Elizabeth Muse to William Mewis, chr. 31 Oct 1731. This William's children are all listed in the Haydon christening records (Margare 1759, Thomas 1762, John 1764, Richard 1766, and William 1772) but there is no Elizabeth. In looking at the order sequence of his children, it would also be hard to place our 1761 Elizabeth. New Family Search also shows a variant christening date of 6 Apr 1757 in H.B. This is not supported by any LDS IGI name extractions nor the actual H.B. christening records. This appears to have been a poor patron-submitted entry made in error from a legitimate 6 Apr 1728 christening entry for Elizabeth Mewes, dau. of William Mewes (1672-) and his second wife Mary Hales, whom he married in 1724. This is probably also the source of the "William" as the supposed father of our Elizabeth as found in many undocumented family histories.

      CHRISTENING:
      1. FHL film 991796, Haydon Bridge chapel records show: "Elizabeth Mewis, chr. 20 Sep 1761, daughter of Michael Mewis of Elrington."

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Note that the church in Haydon was not allowed to record marriages since they were not licensed per the Hardwich Marriage Act of 1754. Marriages resume after 1797. Consequently, the marriage was performed in Warden which was the parish responsible for the subservient chapelry of Haydon. The entry per FHL film 1068615 for Warden parish records:
"By license, Joseph Burnhope and Elizabeth Mewis - both of the Chapelry of Haydon in this parish - were married by licence in this church this thirteenth day of January 1782 by me Wm. Laidman. This marriage was solemnized between us: [signed] Jos. Burnhope, Eliz'th Mewis [her mark of X]. In the presence of John Walton."
John Walton is probably the brother-in-law to Joseph Burnhope.

      BURIAL:
      1. Northumberland County Wide Anglican Burial Index 1813-1837, by parish register, name, address, age, burial date, and [my comments]:
-Haydon Bridge, Joseph Burnhope, Haydon Bridge, 27, 1813 Feb 12. [Son of Joseph and Elizabeth below.]
-Haydon Bridge, Elizabeth Burnhope, Stanfordham, 68, 1835 Oct 16. [Wife of Joseph below. Ingoe Mill was their residence near Stamfordham Parish making them part of Stamfordshire.]
-Haydon Bridge, Joseph Burnhope, Stamfordshire, 81, 1836 Jun 27.

      2. Elizabeth was buried as Elizabeth Burnhope from Ingoe Mills in Stamfordham in 1835, which shows her ties to her ancestral home of Haydon Bridge.
