      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. Mentioned in father's will per copy of partial probate record in my possession. It appears to be the last page of three pages and is marked "#269 Charles H.H." on the bottom of the page. What I have says:
      "...described Real and Personal property shall become the property of our children my sons and daughters and be Equally divided barween them namely, Lucy E. Hales, Mary Ann Hales Brown, James L. Hales, Charles Alma Hales, Caroline E. Hales Woodward, Franklin H. Hales, Hormon B. Hales, Edward M. Hales, Joseph M. Hales, Richard S. Hales, Sarah J. Hales, Hannah P. Hales and Daniel W. Hales.
      Fifthly, I hereby direct and order that the water rights applied upon the respective pieces of land heretofore, shall continue respectively as herein devised and bequeathed.
      Lastly, I hereby appoint my wife Julia Ann Hales the Executrix of this my last Will and Testament.
      In Witness whereof I have herenunto set my hand and seal this 22d Day of June A.D. 1889.
      The foregoing instrument consisting of three pages was... [witnessed and noted with Charles residing at at Spanish Fork, Utah Co., Utah Territory]."

      OBITUARY:
      1. "Pioneer Miller of Spanish Fork Dies. Spanish Fork. May 19. - James L. Males [sic], for 35 consecutive years miller bookkeeper for the Spanish Fork Coop Gem Roller Mill, died at his home yesterday after an illness of more than three months. Mr. Hales suffered a stroke of paralyes [sic] about three months ago and two days ago suffered a second which terminated fatally. James L. Hales was life-long resident of this city, his parents Charles H. and Francis Hales were among the first settlers. He was born here, August 30, 1861. He learned the trade of miller and followed that all his life. He married Sarah A. Hodson in 1882 and she with six children survive him. Hales has always taken a prominent part in civic affairs and has held many positions of trust and honor. He resigned his position with the Gem Mill three months ago because of failing health. The surviving children are Mrs. Susie Robertson, Big Horn, Wyo., Mrs. Mary Simmons, Salt Lake; James Jr., Theron, Lucile and Hodson Hales all of this city. He is also survived by six brothers and one sister; Frank Hales, Leman[?], Idaho; Wells Hales, Arizona; Richard Hales, Bingham; Harmon, Edward and Alma Hales all of Spanish Fork; Mrs. Lucy Hales, Salt Lake; Mrs. Mary A. Brown, Draper; Mrs. Carrie Woodard, Clover City, Nevada; Mrs. Jane Warning, Idaho; Mrs. Minnie Bates, Silver City. The funeral services is not definitely arranged pending word from the absent relatives." The Deseret News, Thurs., 19 May 1921, p. 3.

      2. "James L. Hales a Victim of Paralysis. James L. Hales, well-known and a life-long resident of this city, died Tuesday at his home after an illness of several months. Some time ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and two days before his death suffered another, which terminated fatally. James L. Hales was born here August 30, 1861. He was the son of Charles H. and Frances Hales. He received his education in the public schools. He married Sarah A. Hodson in 1882. They continued to make their home here. Mr. Hales was a miller by trade and for 35 years he was a miller and bookkeeper of the Gem Roller Mills, resigning only 3 months ago on account of ill health. He was always much interested in fraternal work and was a charter member of the local tent Knights of the Maccabees; he was also a charter member of the Modern Woodmen and Royal Neighbors of America, the latter two societies he discontinued. He has always taken part in movements for civic betterment of the city, and served in any public way that did not interfere with his work. He was for two terms a member of the city council. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah A. Hales; three daughters and three sons. They are Mrs. Susie H. Robertson, Big Horn, Wyoming, Mrs. Mary Simmons, Lake Shore; Lucile, James Jr., Theron, and Hodson Hales all of Spanish Fork. He is also survived by five sisters and six brothers, Mrs. Lucy Hales of Salt Lake; Mrs. Mary A. Brown, Draper; Mrs. Caroline Woodward, Clover City, Nevada; Mrs. Jane Waring, Idaho; Mrs. Minnie Bates, Silver City; Frank Hales, Idman, Idaho; Wells Hales, Arizona, Richard Hales, Bingham; Harmon, Alma, and Edward Hales of Spanish Fork. Funeral services will be held at the First ward meeting house Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock." Spanish Fork Press, Thurs., 19 May 1921.
