  • Notes
    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Marriage location with Annis may be "Of Bristol, Ontario, NY" according to one ordinance index entry.

      2. The autobiography of Charles Henry Hales says Julia's father was "Joseph": "...coming to a place called Huntsville. We stayed a short time, since we found quite a big branch of the church there. Some of our company concluded to buy and settle there which they did. I stayed with my father, and went to work for a few months here. I first became acquainted with Julia Ann Lockwood at this place. She was the daughter of Joseph and Annis Lockwood, and was a member..." According to the Hales family newsletter (information by Helen Done), Julia gave her father's name as "George" when she received her endowments. Using the information from the George Gillett Lockwood letter to his sister Julia Ann Hales and the Lockwood Genealogy book, the correct name is Joseph. Julia made perhaps another mistake in her census returns about her father by listing his birth place as Rhode Island which the Lockwood book confirms Connecticut [George Gillett Lockwood gives New York in his census return.] Julia may not have known much about her father or had any relationship because she had herself temple sealed in her lifetime to other men rather than her own father. The name Joseph is confirmed by LDS Patriarchal blessings for Julia Ann Lockwood which indicates her birth of 10 Aug 1824 in Ontario co. with parents Joseph Lockwood and Annis Gillett -- this would be information given by Julia Ann Lockwood directly to the Patriarch.

      3. Email from John Devinney 28 May 2004 : "Notes for Joseph Lockwood: Joseph served in Revolutionary Army for a short period. He enlisted on June 30th, 1775 Captain Hobby's Company (of Colonels Bradley's Regiment) and was discharged on December 13th, 1775. There is a Joseph Lockwood family recorded in the Providence Census in 1790, which contains 3 males under 16 and 3 males over 16, and 8 females in the family. It is not clear if this family includes this Joseph as a young man. There are several Matthewson families listed in the area as well. Narrative Notes: Most of the vital records on this family originate from the Holden "Lockwood Paper" source which has proven to contain errors. Holden places all 5 children to his first wife and omits a second wife and a sixth child named Julia Ann which has been identified. Descendant lines have been identified for 3 of his children. With some concern 3 other children remain a mystery after several generations of research no descendants have been identified. It remains curious that Joseph (Child of Joseph and Charity Lockwood) did not take a wife until he was 36 years old. Several sources indicate Joseph's death in Cazenovia New York, an exact record, containing a date or burial record have not been found. Records have not been found of either marriage or a will which would resolve several outstanding questions. Census records have not been found to prove this family."

      4. On 15 Sep 2011, I visited the Ontario County Archives and Records Center in Canandaigua, New York. There are no deed or probate records of any Lockwood or Barlow of interest to us. I also visited the Canandaigua Historical Society Library and they also had absolutely no references to the same two families. Vital records in the area were not recorded until the late 1800s.

      5. A skeptical view of this Joseph being the right person but without documentation otherwise is taken by Ralph Clark [rbclark2690@infowest.com] per his 20 Sep 2005 email below:
"My objection with Wayne Hale information is the comment "Julia Ann was shifted from one family member to another during the early years of her life. She never knew what real love and family life was like because of this situation." Similar comments were attributed to Grace Haywood as told to her by her mother Clara Hales Mordue. I do not know where these ideas came from. My wife Lynore Hales Clark gets infuriated anytime this idea is brought up. I am not sure where this idea unloving and shifted from family to family comes from. At least Wayne did not know that Julia Ann was in the Barlow family. It was my wife who told the Hales family that Julia Ann was raised in the Barlow family (note Helen even mentions the name of Lynore Hales Clark), and this book did not come out until 1968. My wife kept asking her dad what is the story of Julia Ann, and he did not know about her. Wayne and Lynore's father Lynn were close and visited each other regularly, and nothing was reporrted about Julia Ann.
"Another question might be, when did Julia Ann's biological father Joseph Lockwood leave Annis and the home? Could it have been that Joseph was living separate from Annis so Julia Ann was going back and forth between Joseph's and Annis' homes? Or did Joseph go back where his parents were located in Madison County, which would have been a couple hundred miles away? Helen mentions that the Barlow family, including Annis and Julia Ann, moved to Mendon in 1824. Did Joseph move there too? The record indicated that Joseph left shortly after Julia Ann was born. So what does "shortly after" mean? The Israel Barlow story mentions that the branch in Mendon consisted of Israel Barlow, his mother and brothers and sisters. No mention of a husband of Annis is given, so Joseph must have been gone before then. All of the older Barlow brothers/sisters were in the home for many years when Julia Ann was a young child, and I do not think they would have treated her as an unloved or orphan child. Who were the families she would have been shifted to? Would she not have been shifted to another Barlow family member home. Only Margaret married before the Barlows left Mendon. Margaret and Charles Bunnell moved to near Streetsboro, Ohio about 12 miles from Hiram where Joseph Smith was living when the gospel came to the Barlows. The Barlow book mentions that Israel probably would have gone to see his sister during his visit to see the prophet in Ohio. Margaret joined the LDS church but her husband Charles did not. All the Barlows and Julia Ann became members, but George did not. As you mentioned before and the attachment I sent mentions that George may have gone with his dad. I have never heard of squabling within the various Barlow brothers/sisters that would lead someone to say that they were unloving to other family members.
But, somehow George kept track of his Barlow relatives and his sister Julia Ann, as mentioned in his letter in the 1880s. So, somehow he had kept track of them. His letter mentions that he had been in the Barlow home in Nauvoo. So, where did George go? If he went with his dad and lived in Madison County, NY, then how did he keep track of the Barlow clan when communication was so poor. I have the notion that George spent additional time with the Barlows during these early years so he knew their whereabouts.
"I still feel your genealogy needs to be questioned. History has not been open on what became of Joseph Lockwood and who he really was and how he fits in with Annis Gillett. If this Joseph Lockwood is the same one that you list who married Margaret Mathewson, then what happened to Margaret Mathewson? No death date is provided, so is she still alive in 1822-1823? After all, George would have been conceived with Annis in late 1822, just a year or so after the birth of his last child with Margaret Mathewson (given as about 1820). Did Joseph abandon Margaret and the young family of four by her and marry Annis Gillett Barlow? Sounds fishy to me, and maybe my brother-in-law's idea that Joseph abandoned another family needs to be investigated more. This brother also says that he found that a Joseph had additional children with the same woman with no children in the same years that George and Julia Ann were born. I will follow up on this when I visit with him in the near future."

      6. The following data from Joseph's daughter Julia Ann Lockwood confirms her father's name as Joseph. FHL film 392655 LDS "Patriarchal Blessings Index", three blessings:

      7. An alternate perspective on this individual is provided by Ralph Clark in his treatise on the subject as follows: "Who was the Lockwood Man that Married Annis Gillett Barlow?"
Ralph Barlow Clark, 2690 Aquarius Circle, St. George, Utah 84790-7601, Phone: 435-673-9277, E-mail rbclark2690@infowest.com, October 2005:
"Interest has arisen about who was the Lockwood man that married Annis Gillett Barlow and fathered Julia Ann and George Gillett Lockwood. Confusion reins as to who the proper Lockwood man was that was associated with Annis Gillett Barlow. Three ideas are being proposed as to who this person was and some of the evidence and ideas as to who this person might have been. These proposals have been conceived by different persons doing research about the Lockwood person associated with Annis Gillett Barlow.
Going to www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> and looking for Julia Ann Lockwood, born 10 Aug 1824 in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York, information that comes up on the Ancestral File (AF) for Julia Ann is her birth, death, and burial with a listing of her parents George or Joseph Lockwood and Annis Gillett, and Julia's marriage date and place with Charles Henry Hales. Going to the family button of Julia's parents shows George or Joseph Lockwood as being born in 1776 of Orangeville, Hampden, Massachusetts with no parents or other information listed. George or Joseph's wife was Annis Gillett being born 25 Jul 1784 of Sharon, Norfolk, Massachusetts and death on 13 Aug 1853 in, Shelby, Iowa (death should be 18 Aug 1853 near Caffy's Grove, Shelby, Iowa). Children born in this union were: (1) George Gillett Lockwood, born 13 Jul 1823 in Bristol, Ontario, New York with death of 5 Sep 1886 with no place listed, and (2) Julia Ann Lockwood, born 10 Aug 1824 in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York along with death and burial dates and places in Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah.
When the name Annis Gillett, born in 1784 in Massachusetts, is searched on www.familysearch.org, <http://www.familysearch.org> her name on the AF file listing shows she married (1) Jonathan Barlow, (2) George or Joseph Lockwood, and (3) Edward Thompson. Each of these are correct. Annis bore seven children with Jonathan Barlow, each born in Granville, Hampden, Massachusetts between the years of 1805 and 1820 with dates and places of birth and death for most of the children listed. Jonathan died 16 Dec 1820, about a month after Annis' last Barlow child was born. Annis Gillett Barlow married a George or Joseph Lockwood soon after the death of her husband Jonathan Barlow. However, no date of marriage or death information is provided for George or Joseph. Two children are listed in the family of George or Joseph Lockwood and Annis Gillett: George Gillett and Julia Ann Lockwood. Annis' last marriage to Edward Thompson occurred many years later (date and place unknown) and no children were born in this union. Edward Thompson died in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois in 1842, so the marriage was not a long one.
      Proposal I:
This proposal is presented by Ralph Clark who is a great, great grandson of Annis Gillett Barlow through her son Israel Barlow, a half sister to Julia Ann and George Gillett Lockwood. Another reason Ralph is interested in this information is that he married a great granddaughter of Julia Ann Lockwood (Hales).
The question is whether the listed George or Joseph Lockwood in AF, IGI, and PRF entries of www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> is the appropriate person who was married to Annis Gillett Barlow and fathered the two children in that union. One major problem is that not very much information is provided for this George or Joseph Lockwood. At any rate, this Lockwood person has been submitted to the AF program in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is connected with Annis Gillett.
      Information Available:
      1. Checking in www.ancestry.com <http://www.ancestry.com> (4 Oct 2005), an entry for a George Lockwood was listed in the database of U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 as follows: George Lockwood, male, born in Massachusetts in 1776, spouse name Annis Gillett, spouse birth in Massachusetts in 1784. [[Source information - Yates Publishing, U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 (database online). Provo, Utah: MyFamily.com, Inc, 2004. Original data: This unique collection of records was extracted from a variety of sources including family group sheets and electronic databases. Originally, the information was derived from an array of materials including pedigree charts, family history articles, queries, letters, Bible records, wills, biographies, and manuscript genealogies.]]
      2. Another www.ancestry.com <http://www.ancestry.com> entry (4 Oct 2005) from the "Millennium File Record" had a George Lockwood, spouse unknown, birth 1776, Orangeville, Hampden, Massachusetts, death date 1824 in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York and a child listed with name of Julia Ann Lockwood.
      3. The www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> had: (a) an AF entry had a George or Joseph Lockwood (AF# 2TJZ-59) born in 1776 of Orangeville, Hampden, Massachusetts with spouse Annis Gillett with seven persons submitting information from years 1983 to 1993; (b) International Genealogical Index (IGI) had nine entries for a George or Joseph Lockwood with information appropriate for the George or Joseph Lockwood listed on AF. From these entries, one was for a George Joseph Lockwood, born 1776 in Orangeville, Hampden, Massachusetts, with spouse Annis Gillett married about 1821. Two entries had a George Lockwood born in or about 1776 of Granville, Hampden, Massachusetts. One of these entries had George's parents as Joseph Lockwood and Isabel Hyatt. Another George Lockwood entry had birth about 1780 of Sharen, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Five IGI entries had George or Joseph Lockwood of Sharon, Norfolk, Massachusetts with one having birth about 1779 and three with birth of about 1780; two entries had marriage date about 1805; and one had a spouse of Annis Gillett with a marriage date of about 1805. Unfortunately, the IGI entries did not show submitter names nor provide any sources of information; (c) Pedigree Resource File (PRF) had five entries for a George or Joseph Lockwood, each with birth of about 1776 or in 1776, born in or of Orangeville, Hampden, Massachusetts, and with the spouse Annis Gillett. Two of these entries had notes, but none listed sources for information.
      4. The one IGI entry of www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> listing George's parents as Joseph Lockwood and Isabel Hyatt did not give any additional detail of parents. Another IGI entry under a Joseph Lockwood born 2 Oct 1778 listed parents as Joseph Lockwood and Isabel (this was from extracted records). This latter IGI entry listed Joseph's birth place as Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut. A website listed with the www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org> search for George or Joseph Lockwood had Norwalk Genealogical Registry, pp.31-40. This site was searched and on the top of page 35 was listed Joseph Lockwood married to Isabel Hyatt on 31 Oct 1774 with children Joseph Lockwood born 2 Oct 1778, William Lockwood born 23 Jul 1780, and Fanny Lockwood born 29 Jun 1784. [[This Norwalk Registry was The Ancient Historical Record of Norwalk, Connecticut, pp. 31-40, compiled and published by Edwin Hall, pastor of First Congregational Church of Norwalk, Connecticut. Published by Baker and Scribner in New York, 1947. This was transcribed as a USGenWeb project and contributed to Fairfield County, Connecticut.]]
      Comments:
The information presented indicates that many people have found a George or Joseph Lockwood that existed and has been cited to be the husband of Annis Gillett Barlow. If the George or Joseph Lockwood listed is the appropriate person who was married to Annis Gillett Barlow, then he was within an age range common for many husband-wife relationships of the time (8 years difference). If this Joseph Lockwood truly was the son of Joseph Lockwood and Isabel Hyatt, then he was born in Connecticut, not Massachusetts, and would have only been about 6 years older than Annis. The major problem is the limited amount of information available about this person. Additional research should be conducted to find more information about this person to verify that he was the husband of Annis Gillett Barlow (assuming the other proposals to not be correct).
      Proposal II
This proposal is information from the files of Kerry Petersen (14540 E. Brian Dr., Palmer, Alaska, 99645 - E-mail kjp@mtaonline.net ). Kerry is a great grandson of Julia Ann Lockwood and Charles Henry Hales. Kerry has done extensive research in genealogy and is superb in documenting information about persons he researches.
Kerry's proposal is that a Joseph Lockwood, born 9 Jan 1755 in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut with no death date but in Cazenovia, Madison, New York was married in about 1821 to Annis Gillett Barlow. The marriage place was listed as of Canandaigua, Ontario, New York. This Joseph Lockwood was the son of Joseph Lockwood and Charity Knapp, both born in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut (Joseph born about 1727 and Chastity born 5 Dec 1733 with no death dates given). The Joseph Lockwood married to Annis had a previous family with a wife named Margaret Matthewson who bore four children by him (all surnamed Lockwood and born in or of Providence, Providence, Rhode Island) named Matthewson Bertman (born about 1792), Marvin (born about 1810), Margaret (born about 1815), and Sarah (born about 1820).
      Information Available
Kerry Petersen notes about Joseph Lockwood who married Annis Gillett were taken from his file about this person.
      RESEARCH_NOTES:
      3. Email from John Devinney 28 May 2004 : "Notes for Joseph Lockwood: Joseph served in Revolutionary Army for a short period.
      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. Letter from Robert L. Hales to Chris Petersen (undated-probably early 1980's) states: "First we have had professional researchers spend 2 years working on the Lockwood line with no results. It is believed that George (or Joseph) Lockwood deserted his wife and 2 children. In any case, Annis has been sealed to her first husband, Jonathan Barlow, and George is no longer in the picture." Note 13 feb 1999: Ken Petersen went ahead and had couple (Geo. and Annis sealed). Hales information unsubstantiated.
      2. From "Genealogy of the Lockwood Families" compiled by Holden and Dunbar (FHL film 0000551): Joseph Lockwood (Robert-1, Gershom-2, Joseph-3, Joseph-4), born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Thursday, Jan 9th, 1755, and died at an advanced age, in Cazenovia, New York; son of Joseph and Charity (Knapp) Lockwood; married Margaret Matthewson. Kerry Petersen notes about Annis Gillett were taken from his files about this person.

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. It is mentioned in the book The Town of Mendon 1813-2000 and Village of Honeoye Falls 1838-2000 by Diane Ham and Anne Bullock, Honeoye Falls-Town of Mendon Historical Society, January 2000, p. 75, that Annis Gillett, George Gillett Lockwood, Julia Ann Lockwood, Israel Barlow, Jonathan Barlow, Truman Barlow, Annis Barlow and Rhoda Barlow all went to Kirtland, OH with the Mormons in 1832.
The Israel Barlow Story and Mormon Mores book compiled by Ora H. Barlow, sponsored by the Israel Barlow Family Association, and lithographed by Publishers Press, Salt Lake City, Utah in 1968 (page 84) provides the following information about Annis Gillett Barlow. Israel Barlow was a half sister to George Gillett and Julia Ann Lockwood. The author mentions information about the Annis' Barlow family in Massachusetts about the time of the death of her husband Jonathan Barlow in Dec 1820, then states "A family note states, 'About 1818 or 19 his father moved the family to Canandaigua, N. York.'" [[taken from Items of Barlow History supplied by Job W. Barlow 25398 Eureka, San Bernardino, California and Israel Barlow Family Association, 290 E. 4th North, Bountiful, Utah 84010.]]
Additional information on page 84 of the Israel Barlow Story book says: "It was shortly before this time, perhaps the fall of 1821, that Israel's mother, Annis, married George Lockwood, no doubt hoping to keep the family together and feeling, perhaps, that the burden on Israel, age 15, and his next younger brother, Jonathan Watson, age 13, would be somewhat reduced. But as so often happens in such cases, Annis was 'blessed' with two more babies and lost her second husband. It is not known whether he died or left her. [[a superscript number refers to a note at the end of the chapter, which said "Separated" says a family note (BSBF - Biographical Sketch of Barlow Family; see JWB - supplied by Job W. Barlow, 25398 Eureka, San Bernardino, California) and another states "about 1824 Separated" (IOBH - Israel Barlow Family Association, 290 E. 4th North, Bountiful, Utah 84010.)]]. Her eighth Child, George Lockwood, was born in Granville, according to one of our early temple records, some time in 1822. Her ninth Child, Julia Ann Lockwood, was born at Canandaigua, 10 Aug 1824. From these birth dates it appears that the family must have moved back to Canandaigua sometime in the autumn of 1822. Pamela, Israel's daughter, states that 'soon after grandfather [Jonathan] died, she [Annis] sold their property and left Massachusetts." (Italics added for emphasis.)
An interesting letter was in the file of Van B. Hales (see Proposal III), which provides some additional ideas about the Joseph Lockwood, husband of Annis Gillett and father of two children. This letter follows:
      Mrs. Delos E. Bown

      Mr. Ora H. Barlow

      Salt Lake City, Utah 84102
      Dear Mr. Barlow:
I thought you might be interested in some genealogical work which I have been doing. I am the great-granddaughter of Charles Henry Hales and Julia Ann Lockwood and I have been trying to unlock the mystery of Julia Ann's father, whom we know very little about. Although I haven't been able to prove anything about him, I have worked out a very plausible theory which I would like to share with you. However, in my searchings I have been able to establish the whereabouts of Julia Ann's brother George Gillet and have recently had his temple work done for him, as is indicated on the enclosed family group sheet.
Frederick Holden and E. Dunbar Lockwood wrote a book in 1889 the Descendants of Robert Lockwood. In this work they list George Gillet Lockwood as being the son of Joseph Lockwood and Margaret Matthewson and then list George Gillet as being married to Olive Elmire Merchant with three children William Henry, Mamie Elizabeth, and Georgie Cornelia. In Holden this Joseph Lockwood is the second son of Joseph Lockwood and Charity Knapp, and he was born 9 January 1755. It is this Joseph Lockwood that I believe to be the 2nd husband of Annis Gillett and for some reason this marriage was never mentioned in the book.
I believe that when Joseph Lockwood and Annis Gillet separated that the father (Joseph) and son (George Gillett) went back to Cazenovia where his children by his first marriage were living and young George grew up closer to this family than his mothers. In the 1830 census for Madison County a notation is made of a Joseph Lockwood and a male under 10 years of age residing in the county.
This George is obviously our man since he and his wife, and oldest son William Henry all had their temple work done for them in 1889 shortly after George's death. He must have been in communication with Julia Ann, his sister or at least visited with her when he went east shortly before his death as is recorded in your book. In the Holden book also are authenticated by the 1850 census for George G.'s family with all listed except Georgie Cornelia who wasn't born. I have not located them in a 1860 census. They might have moved - maybe to Michigan where some of her people were living. The records in the area are almost non-existent due to fires, etc.
Have you any further information on John Jones? I would appreciate it if you have.
      Sincerely,
      (Signed) Margaret Hales Bown

      Comments
If this Joseph Lockwood is the husband of Annis Gillett and father of George Gillett and Julia Ann Lockwood, then Joseph was 69 (and 7 months) old when Julia Ann was born and 29 years older than Annis. These age differences seem suspicious. However, Joseph's age differential with his other wife Margaret Matthewson was about 18 years. Margaret's last recorded birth with Joseph was in 1820 in Providence, Rhode Island, so he would have left Margaret and married Annis Gillett within about a year after the birth of a baby by Margaret. No death date is given for Margaret, so it is not known whether she died or whether Joseph left her. If Joseph left Margaret soon after the birth of a baby, then this seems to be a similar behavior also with Annis. That is, he left Annis relatively soon after or before Julia Ann, the second child with Joseph Lockwood, was born. Barlow family notes indicate that Joseph left Annis about 1824, which is the same year that Julia Ann was born. One www.ancestry.com <http://www.ancestry.com> entry has Joseph dying 2 Aug 1823 in Canandaigua, New York, which, if true, would mean that Joseph died a full year before Julia Ann was born. Could this have been another Lockwood man?
If the idea, as mentioned in family notes, that George Gillett Lockwood left the Barlow family and lived with his biological father as a youth, then George would have been with a man old enough to be his grandfather or great grandfather. The notes mention that George was young. Depending on how one defines being young, George was mentioned as leaving Mendon, New York with the rest of the Barlow family in 1832 to Kirtland, Ohio (from a book by Diane Ham and Anne Bullock entitled "The Town of Mendon 1813-2000 and Village of Honeoye Falls 1838-2000," Honeoye Falls-Town of Mendon Historical Society, January 2000, p. 75, which mentions that Annis Gillett, George Gillett Lockwood, Julia Ann Lockwood, Israel Barlow, Jonathan Barlow, Truman Barlow, Annis Barlow and Rhoda Barlow all went to Kirtland, OH with the Mormons in 1832.) George Gillett Lockwood would have been about 9 or 10 years of age at the time the family left Mendon, New York for Ohio. So if George went to live with his biological father, it was likely when he was in his teens. This would have put George's father in his 80s. The letter by George Gillett Lockwood, which was written to his sister Julia Ann and the Barlows (copy in possession of Kerry Petersen and in notes associated with George Gillett Lockwood by Kerry Petersen) in about 1869, mentions that George had been in the Barlow home in Nauvoo, Illinois. The Barlow's did not live in Nauvoo until late 1839 or 1840. Whether this was a visit after being away from the Barlow family and living with his biological father or that he lived with the Barlow family during their Ohio and Missouri years is unknown (the Barlow family moved from Ohio to Missouri in 1838 and to Illinois in late 1838 or early 1839). Nevertheless, George Gillett Lockwood left the Barlow family in sufficient time to marry and have a child age 5 when the 1850 census was taken in Cazenovia, New York, where George was living at the time. One reason some may believe that George Gillett Lockwood lived as a younster with his biological father was the listing in the Holden and Lockwood genealogy book (1889) that lists a George or Joseph as a child in the family of George Lockwood and Margaret Matthewson. This is not accurate, and Kerry Petersen has pointed out that Annis' George should not have been listed with that family.
The George Gillett Lockwood Group Sheet has George being born 13 July 1823 in Bristol, Ontario, New York, but the Israel Barlow Story mentions him to be born in Granville, Massachusetts in 1822. Could this New York birth place be for another George Lockwood? In addition, the www.ancestry.com <http://www.ancestry.com> entry where a George Lockwood is listed as dying 2 Aug 1823 in Canandaigua, New York, could this be for another George Lockwood other than the one associated with Annis Gillett Barlow.
There appears to be sufficient deficiencies and inconsistencies in data to question this Joseph as the father of Julia Ann and wife of Annis. Additional research is needed to verify that this Joseph is the correct person.
      Proposal III
This proposal is information from the files of Van B. Hales (3516 West Ridge Dr., West Valley City, Utah 84119 - earlier address of 1429 Michigan Ave., Salt Lake City, Utah 84105). Van is a great grandson of Julia Ann Lockwood Hales, and conducted research some 30+ years ago on who the Lockwood man was that was potentially married to Annis Gillett Barlow.
      Information Available
A letter that Van wrote to a person regarding the George Lockwood genealogy is typed as he wrote it (some misspellings or unusual structures exist). A copy of this letter was in Van's file, and I (Ralph B. Clark) have Van's file in my possession at the time of this writing (October 2005).

      Dear Mrs. Fowler,
Mr. Ora H. Barlow has referred your letter to me for response concerning the George Lockwood genealogy.
Julia Ann Lockwood Hales is my Great Grandmother and her father, George Lockwood, is my 2 GG Father. I have done a lot of research on the George Lockwood line. Listed below are my conclusions:
      1. George Lockwood was born 29 July 1793, in Norwalk, Conn, son of Stephen Lockwood and Sarah Betts.
      a. George Lockwood married 1st, Mary Cannon, in 1813 and 2nd wife being Jane Osborn married in 1835. Our concern is with the first wife, Mary Cannon. See Incl 1 listing the children by Mary Cannon. (Ref GS\ Film F551, History of Lockwood Family, Entry No. 1050, p. 369.)
      b. Between the two children by Mary Cannon; (1) George Lockwood, born 1821 (probably conceived in 1820 or early 1821) and (2) Maltby Betts Lockwood, born 1824, our George Lockwood either married or lived with Annis Gillett.
      c. George Lockwood married Annis Gillett in 1821. See Israel Barlow Book, p. 84.
      d. George Lockwood children by Annis Gillett.
      1. George, born in 1822, at Granville, Mass.
      2. Julia Ann Lockwood, born 10 Aug 1824 at Canandaigua, Ontario Cy, N.Y. Conceived in Nov 1823.
      3. George Lockwood left Annis Gillett in late 1823 or early 1824 and returned to Mary Cannon and had next child by her being Maltby Betts Lockwood born in 1824.
      e. When George left Annis Gillett in 1823, she then carrying Julia Ann, left Granville, Mass (home of Gillett family) and went to Canandaigua, Ontario Cy, N.Y. where her late husband, Jonathan Barlow and brother owned land. (Israel Barlow Story, p. 84) Julia Ann Lockwood was born in the above town.
      f. You can see by the outlined facts, that the two children of George Lockwood and Annis Gillette fit in between the two children of George Lockwood and Mary Cannon. Much mystery covers the marriage (?) of George Lockwood and Annis Gillett. Did George get divorce or separation from Mary Cannon? Did he legally mary Annis Gillett and legally separate from her, Etc. I doubt with current information this matter will ever be cleared up.
      2. Additional Facts.
      a. Thomas Gillett, father of Annis Gillett, lived in Granville, Mass. (Israel Barlow pedigree charts)
      b. Annis Gillett and Jonathan Barlow were married in Granville, Mass in 1804.
      c. Jonathan Barlow, 1st husband of Annis Gillett, died 16 Dec 1820 in Granville, Mass.
      d. As George Lockwood, son of Annis Gillett and George Lockwood, was born in 1822 in Granville, Mass, it may be possible that Annis Gillett married George Lockwood in Granville, Mass. (Israel Barlow Story)
      e. Stephen Lockwood, father of George Lockwood, had land transactions in Ontario, Cy, GSA Film (495855) Grantee Index, Canandugua, Ontario Cy, N.Y., Liber 6, p.614 and Liber 17, p. 297.
      f. Both Jonathan Barlow, 1st husband of Annis Gillett and George Lockwood's father, Stephen Lockwood, had land transactions in Canandugua, Ontario Cy N.Y. It is possible that they were acquainted.
      g. The Lockwood family was located in Norwalk, Conn. The towns of Granville, Mass, and Norwalk, Conn are about 130 miles apart.
      h. More research will need to be done to ascertain whether Stephen Lockwood, father of George Lockwood, and Thomas Gillett, father of Annis Gillett, had any land transactions with each other in Norwalk, Conn; Granville, Mass; or in Ontario Cy, N.Y. Finding this information would identify fairly certainly that the George Lockwood identified above, was indeed the husband of Annis Gillett.
      3. Final Proof.
      a. The most definite proof, identifying the above George Lockwood as being the husband of Annis Gillett (1821-1824) is from the TIB's files. Julia Ann Lockwood, daughter of George Lockwood and Annis Gillett and wife of Charles Henry Hales, along with her sons George G. Hales and Stephen F. Hales, had the baptismal work done for George Lockwood and his ancestors in 1890. See Incls 2 &3, TIB slips and family group sheets on Lockwood family. As this ordinance work was done in 1890, when Julia Ann Lockwood Hales was still living, this ordinance work for departed Lockwoods was done under the instigation of Julia Ann, resulting from her first-hand knowledge of the facts involved, which facts were probably derived from her mother, Annis Gillett Barlow Lockwood.
      b. There is an outside chance, not very likely, however, that Julia Ann by correspondence with a genealogist in Norwalk, Conn (year 1890 or earlier), obtained the birth date of George Lockwood of Norwalk, Conn and assumed him to be her father. I much prefer the argument that Julia Ann derived some first-hand knowledge from her mother, Annis Gillett, concerning the parentage of her father, George Lockwood.
      4. I am enclosing some pedigree charts of the Lockwood Genealogy and allied lines. This genealogy is extensive and about 75% of the names listed have had their temple work done.
I spent most of last August researching this information. I hope this information will add to your genealogy and clarify the George Lockwood line.
      Sincerely,
      Van B. Hales
Note: In some sources, Deacon Joseph Lockwood is listed as being married to Mary Wood. This has been determined by subsequent genealogists to be Mary Weed, not Wood. The Weed family is fairly extensive in the Stanford, Conn area. This error will have to be corrected on the family group sheet and also on the temple sealing file.
The Hickok Genealogy, 929.273 H528h has extensive history on the Lockwood and allied lines.
      Incls: As listed in letter.
I am enclosing pedigree charts for Edward Bulkely, who married Olive Irby. Pres. George Albert Smith descends from this line and Archibald Bennett in his book, Proving Your Pedigree, carries this line back to the 5th century. Copy of this chart also enclosed.
A photocopy of the Incl 1 mentioned in 1a of the above letter (GS\ Film F551, History of Lockwood Family, Entry No. 1050, p. 369.) was in Van's file. The information for Entry 1050 was as follows:

      Comments
The George or Joseph Lockwood proposed by Van Hales as being the husband of Annis Gillett Barlow would have been nine years younger than Annis. This age differential could be possible, but women were usually younger than their husbands in almost all marriages during those times. The women needed someone who could support a family, usually had some work skills, and likely had some resources before taking on a wife. In the case of the Joseph Lockwood proposed by Kerry Petersen, he did not marry until he was 36 years of age. If this George Lockwood proposed by Van Hales is the correct person married to Annis Gillett Barlow, then he seems to have been a real 'conniving' person to abandon his first wife Mary Cannon for 3-4 years, become hitched with another woman and fathering two children, then return to his original wife to father more children with her. If this is true, it would be logical why this George or Joseph Lockwood separated from Annis Gillett rather abruptly if Annis found out about his being married to another woman at the time. This could also explain why so little information is known about the Lockwood man who fathered two children with Annis Gillett Barlow. If true, Annis probably did not want to reveal much about this relationship, and the other family members did not know what the conditions were with this George or Joseph Lockwood. The Israel Barlow Story says that the Lockwood father of Annis' two Lockwood children "died or left her", and family notes mention that Annis and George separated.
      OVERALL Comments
The information presented with these proposals leaves a lot of questions to be answered as to the truth of who the Lockwood man was that married/associated with Annis Gillett Barlow and fathered two children. Since the temple work was performed for each of the George or Joseph Lockwood persons with different data, the Hales family had to have extensive compassion and love for the person, whoever the correct person may be. The early histories and genealogies of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York list numerous George or Joseph Lockwood persons. The Lockwood families were prolific and a common name for male children was George or Joseph. Separating and defining each of these George or Joseph's has not been or will not be easy, and making sure the proper persons have been connected with appropriate spouses and families may be more difficult than desired unless or until primary documents can be discovered, revealed, or examined. To say the least, the present information provided about the desired George or Joseph Lockwood is still confusing. Making conclusions about who the correct Lockwood person associated with Annis Gillett is without additional information could be chancy and non-verifiable. We may likely have to wait in many cases like this one until the veil is open to the other side, and the real persons provide the appropriate information.
The comment made in the story of Wayne B. Hales, which has been related by Kerry Petersen in some of his notes, about George Lockwood separation from Annis being because George did not agree with or want to be a part of the restored gospel (Mormonism) has no foundation. The George or Joseph Lockwood married to or associated with Annis Gillett left by or soon after the birth of Julia Ann (by 1824), and the restored gospel was not being preached at that time. It was not until 1830 that the missionary effort began, and the Barlow family did not join the LDS church until 1832. So, the Lockwood husband of Annis had been gone for several years."

      BIOGRAPHY:

'He enlisted in Capt. Thomas Hobby's Company, June 30th, 1775, and was discharged Dec 13th, 1775'. (Conn. in the Revolution, p. 66)."

      Aloha,
You have proposed that Joseph Lockwood, husband of Margaret Matthewson, is the Joseph Lockwood who was born 19 Sep 1765 in Cranston, RI to Joseph Lockwood and Etahallanah Westcott. You further propose that Joseph Sr. also moved to Whitestown NY. I suppose this is somewhat based on the 1800 censuses in Whitestown of the older Joseph and the younger Joseph Jr. The 1800 census does have Joseph [presumably Sr.] with one dau.? 10-25, and one female over 45 as is Joseph as well. The senior Joseph of Cranston is neither married nor has such a young child in 1800 and so the 1800 census does not give much to work from.

My question is whether or not you have anything else that you used to take father and son, both Josephs, from Cranston to Whitesfield, NY? I guess this also somewhat hinges on whether the Joseph Lockwood "Jr." of same 1800 census is really the one who married Margaret Matthewson, for which I asked your opinion in a separate message today.

Your proposal is counter to Holden's assertion that it was the Joseph Lockwood b. 1755 to Joseph Lockwood and Charity Knapp who married Margaret Matthewson. Yes, I know of the difficulties of Holden in the earliest generation or two, but the later ones were done by his correspondence to various families and he is the only one that ever properly nailed the children of Joseph and Margaret, which has now been substantiated. To go counter to his assertion and change the status quo would require more than a vague set of 1800 censuses -- so I am hoping you may have more to share...

Yes, I can fill a box with all the various proposed Josephs for this family that I have seen and communicated over the years, but you offer a new and fresh perspective. I look very much to hearing back from you.

      Regards, Kerry

I am looking at your new construct of the Joseph Lockwood and Margaret Matthewson family. I had previously identified four children of this couple which I was able to prove through old correspondence amongst this family. You have added three new children all of Whitestown, NY: William 1794, a dau. 1797, and Joseph 1797. I have tried to duplicate your research and cannot yet do so. From the best I can tell, you are trying to piece together a family based on the cryptic 1800 census in the same place for a Joseph Lockwood, Jr. Can you give me some clue as to what led you to add these three children in this particular location?

      Aloha,
You have proposed that Joseph Lockwood, husband of Margaret Matthewson, is the Joseph Lockwood who was born 19 Sep 1765 in Cranston, RI to Joseph Lockwood and Etahallanah Westcott.

Just going to bed now. There are a few links between the Lockwoods in Oneida and Cranston. I’m going through records one at a time, but there is a marriage record of James Lockwood in 1796 in a Dighton which states he is “of Whitestown”. Barbara Lockwood married James W. Matthewson and removed to Onondaga, Onondaga Co., NY. The census records of James G. Lockwood, James and Annar Gilbert Lockwood’s son state he was born in Massachusetts. The Dighton, Bristol Co., MA vital records corfirm this. I have a few more records but I only have time to do a few each day. I’ll keep working on it as I have time! Thanks again for your interest and support!
      Best,
