      1. Montgomery County, NY, Archives 19 Sep 2007 visit. Family file for Cain/Kane with research letter by the archivist in a letter dated 13 May 1982 to a patron:
      A. "Baptism record for John Cain, 5 Mar 1763, parents Thomas Cain and Maria Jong, sp. Willom Jong, Margarita Jong from the Church Records for the Dutch Reformed Church in Caughnawaga (Fonda), NY."
      B. The book "Mohawk Valley in the Revolution," by Maryly Penrose shows Thomas Cain as a voter for Jno. Frey for sheriff of Tryon Co., Sept. 7, 1775.
      C. Per "Sir William Johnson Papers," vol. 10:394 shows mention of a Caine (no christian name) as an interpreter 1762 (letters from Gladwin to Amherst dated Feb. 4, 1762). Vol. 7:814 shows a bill presented by Thomas Caine 28 July 1770 to Sir William.

      2. Variant surname spellings: Cain, Caine, Kane, or Kaine.

John enlisted in July 1780 and served for five months as a private in Capt. Garret Putman's Co., Col. John also served in the War of 1812, while a resident of Schuyler, Herkimer Co., as a substitute for his son, Peter; from 10/5/1814 to 11/18/1814, private in Capt.
